brilliant second ep, and it's nice to have been right about hart...

mcconaughey is fantastic.  can't take my eyes off him when he's on screen. the scenery is beautiful too.  my main concern is that it's going to be one of those where we dig deeper and deeper into the characters and never really get anywhere with the case.  time will tell.

Thought it wasn't that good exactly for that last part you mentioned. We are still early and characters need to be developed but they could have made a sort of a breakthrough or give us a nice clue.

PS: Daddario was excellent, wasn't she?  :)

well, if the writing is tight enough, we probably have seen several subtle clues in ep 2 , it's just we won't know it until much later on.

Spoiler
however, did you not notice the huge cave painting-style woman with antlers painted in the church?  quite a clue and a breakthrough, potentially.

Um...I did but it was right at the end. Gave me the impression that maybe they focused too much on the characters on that one prior to the ending

Spoiler
it's a character show though, to a ridiculous degree (there are not many dramas that are so interested in character motivation that they have them explaining themselves in the future :)) which is fine by me.  and because of that whole "tell the whole story, in order", you get the sense of trudging around, the shoe leather of investigation.  still, it was neat that every person they spoke to during the episode pointed them towards the church, where the breakthrough happened.

the case is a backdrop, and i'm fine with a small step towards a resolution each episode as long as it does all add up to a resolution.

I can see this being a shortlived series sadly, with Mcconaughy's lofty heights  in movies  right now.

On a more serious note, I don't think anyone can complain about the lack of a female presence in the show now. It's pretty clear what the importance of women in the show will be.

Isn't it pretty clear that chauvinism in small town USA is a theme for the show? I don't think the show is positioning itself behind the chauvinist characters (especially Harrelson's character), at all.

A lot of that behaviour takes place in the mid 90's too, you'd expect it to be a little behind the times.

Another top notch episode.

Rust Cohle is one of the more captivating characters of recent TV history.

I might even go so far to say that I've never been so impressed by a first 3 episodes of a show. I guess with only 3 episodes to work with for the entire plot, they don't have a whole lot of time to dillydally.

The cynic returns to admit that it's grown on me (mainly because I'm in awe of McConaughey's performance). I don't think it's anywhere near the powerhouse some of you feel it is, but it's getting better and I enjoyed last night's episode more than the first two.

still brilliant, but boy is it bleak.  superb dialogue though, despite the sixth form philosophy-ness of so much of it, and a couple of characters who are as bad as each other in different ways.
