Never seen the anvil documentary! Is it worth a watch. ???

Well worth watching, interesting from start to finish, there's a bit in Japan that made my heart smile.

So, Slayer have announced their next tour will be their last. About right, I reckon, it's not the same without Jeff. I remember reading that Tom Araya didn't really want to make Repentless, it sounds like he's had enough. I know Kerry King has signed Paul and Gary up to contracts recently, so maybe they'll carry on, but it better NOT be as any incarnation of Slayer. No Tom, no Slayer.

To be honest I think most of the "old" bands don't have "it" anymore. Metallica lost it many moons ago, Mega-Dave has never been my cup of tea, Anthrax has gotten a bit boring imo. There are many others like AC/DC, Guns n' Roses, Scorpions, Manowar... The list is endless but nearly all of them are shadows of what they used to be. And understandably so. They get older, their mindset changes and the fast paced angry music isn't who they are anymore. It's sad I think but that's just long lost memories talking. Things change and old rock n rollers die (RIP Lemmy) and new bands emerge. It's just a bitch when SO much of the new music is crap - to me at least.

Luckily I've found a good handful of "not so old" bands that I like. Primordial, Clutch, Opeth and Sólstafir to name a few.

How do you feel about Mastodon? I'm a big fan of Clutch and Opeth (later Opeth) but as I get older I am mellowing quite a bit. I do like to pop into this thread from time to time but do find it a bit too heavy for my general liking now. To be honest I don't know many of the bands mentioned. I'm more of an old rocker and have about 4 thousand rock albums but am always keen to find new bands so might give Primordial a listen.

I think it's quite good to be honest. It's fascinating (and sad) how tenacious they are despite their obvious lack of succes. Just proves love (of music) conquers all... \m/

Well worth watching, interesting from start to finish, there's a bit in Japan that made my heart smile.

So get it watched Andy you twat and then you can return it to its rightful owner!

A random suggestion for a gig popped up when I was booking tickets for something else, upon seeing the description as 'Scottish Pirate Metal' I decided to have a listen and am now also going to see these guys in about a month:

Mind if I chime in? Mastodon are great, didn't care much for The Hunter apart from 3 or 4 tracks, though. Crack The Skye is probably my favourite album.

Love Opeth, one talented band they are. Never got to see them live yet, something always seems to get in the way.

Now Clutch... one of my favourite bands, absolutely adore them. Love everything they've done. Neil Fallon is one of the best front men around, and I honestly think Jean Paul Gaster is this generations Bonham.

I went through a "post-metal" phase a few years back, bands like ISIS, Pelican, The Ocean, Jesu and the like. Lovely stuff, might have to revisit that. Any other recommendations along those lines?

Opeth.... Aaaahhhhhh! I love them! I saw in December 2016 in Copenhagen in a venue normally used for symphony orchestras etc. What an amazing show! And the sound in there... WOW! If you get the chance go see them - they're are brilliant!

Couldn't agree more about Clutch! I love their groove and I fully agree re. JPG - he's a beast! Do you know "The Company Band"?

Opeth played at the Sydney Opera House on their last tour, FYI. Unsurprisingly, they were the first and only metal or hard-rock or punk or etc. band to do so.

Very chill song, Bennekov.

I been hammering Ghost Brigade, Inquisition and the new albums from Watain, Summoning and Harakiri for the Sky lately.

Nice! I just picked up Summoning last night and am planning on giving it some time today at work. I'm assuming they won't be reinventing the wheel and it'll appeal to fans of, well, Summoning, since they are kinda unique (blatant ripoffs Ered Wethrin and Caladan Brood nonwithstanding). Also, turns out Summoning is one of those words where if you look at it more than twice ceases to seem like an actual English word.

Did you get a physical copy of Watain? I wanna check it out but doesn't seem to be on Bandcamp. Guess I could just try youtube.

Also got the new Abigor yesterday...their earlier stuff (Nachthymnen in particular) is all classic but I haven't kept up with their output in a long time so interested in dipping my toes back in to some meat and potatoes black metal.

Since the thread has been revived briefly, does anyone here listen to The Ruins of Beverast? I only discovered them last year; they are (or rather, he is) quite phenomenal. Black, doom, death... whatever you want to call it, it's immensely powerful. Have a taste - each album is quite different, even though they share some common themes and even riffs that are ingeniously reinterpreted across albums:

Same boat as you, Exuvia was my intro to Ruins of Beverast and man, it's like the soundtrack to an acid trip that took a dark turn. They're a band I'd heard about for years but never checked out til recently, which album do you suggest next from the back catalogue? Rain on the Impure or whatever is the one I heard about the most from other people.

For all the folks talking about good bands in the "metal but not extreme metal/rock with a little bit more teeth/post-metal, etc".... This is not my typical fare so I don't have a good background on it, but there are two bands I would suggest without reservation that put out albums that are in my top 10 best of 2017 even as someone who isn't a big fan of the genre. Really think these would appeal to nearly anyone.

Elder - Reflections of a Floating World

Rain Upon the Impure is probably the most exalted album and with good reason, it is phenomenal. On the last page I posted the youtube link for the full LP edition, which was a re-master and includes a bonus track. It's a bit more accessible than the original CD version, with clearer percussion that really helps you feel the frantic nature of the music. The CD version does seem to capture some of the more chilling, off-kilter parts better, but at times it's annoyingly muddled. Both are available on youtube.

I also posted Blood Vaults and Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite (awful title, I know), which are both great too, perhaps a bit more "concept album"-like. I didn't post the debut album, Unlock the Shrine, but that is also definitely worth a listen; it's a bit more psychedelic and less claustrophobic than later albums.

I'd probably look at Rain first, but it does maybe need a few listens before it really catches on. Blood Vaults is maybe the most accessible, with a very clear and doom-heavy sound.

Like that Ghost Brigade mate.

Been listening to Dvne for a while now, think they're brilliant.

One genre I can never get into is Black Metal. Dunno why. I'm into thrash, death, doom, grindcore at the extreme end of metal, but black metal just doesn't grab me. I suppose it's just not for me. I prefer aggression rather than atmosphere.

Love all of those bands. Deny the Absolute and Vestiges are absolute banging songs from Pelican.

To add to some excellent recommendations since I last posted, I'd say check out Russian Circles to add to that list. Dave Turncrantz's drum fills have been powering me through work days for many of a year now. Check out these two songs for a good starting point to what they're all about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyZ4z662v5w - Station

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mF5TuWTro4 - Youngblood

I'd also recommend giving Red Sparowes a listen if you already haven't. Somewhat of a super-group consisting of members from bands in our three posts and elsewhere in this thread.

Had a video somewhere of when they got the whole crowd on the stage and played from the floor up at us at Manchester Academy. Scenes. Mad to think I seen them on the BBC Introducing stage at Leeds one year after listening to them on MySpace.

It was very intense and a great gig. Their support “Tempel” is worth a listen. 3 brothers + a member from Kvelertak. Find them on YouTube and give them a chance. It’s worth it!!

I had no idea Danzig were playing Glasgow this year.  Listening to them since the first album way back when.

And now I'm booked up to be away when that gig is on......gutted!  >:(

Not sure if already mentioned but just stumbled across Midnight Odyssey, epic atmospheric cosmic/astral black metal from Australia (i know!).

Stunning
I remember hearing about them but never checked them out, but sounds up my alley.

Here's a great example of his music - 22 mins long, elements of Emperor, Summoning, Dead Can Dance - amazing stuff really

I happen to be listening to the entire album right now:

The guy has no qualms about writing songs that go forever and abandon all metal elements for 10+ minutes at a time, and it's fucking great.

Somehow, even though the band formed in 2004, I only heard Cultes des Ghoules for the first time yesterday, and I am absolutely hooked. This is some seriously fucking evil black metal, which isn't easy to pull off 30 years after the initial wave. Think De Mysteriis era Mayhem with Celtic Frost groove and Ruins of Beverast-style psychedelia (huh?  you say...). And to top it all off, some quite outstanding lyrics, from a Polish band singing in English, no less.

Here's a link to "Coven, or Evil Ways Instead of Love". Weird title, and an even weirder concept. The lyrics are in fact the script to a play, with each song being a scene. The story is of a woman succumbing to the lure of witchcraft and selling her soul to the Devil. It's such a novel way of writing music, and the same vocalist alternates between the voices of the different characters in quite spectacular fashion. For some more orthodox - but still brilliant - fare, check out the "Henbane" album and "Spectres Over Transylvania" EP.

I normally hate viral marketing, but I gotta say I'm loving youtube's recommendations feature. This band has me PUMPED, I feel like it's the early 90s again and I'm browsing the local dungeon-cum-metal-record-store in an era when nearly every purchase was fucking gold.
