That's a great picture, I've not seen it before.

It could well be when Pershing arrived, Pathe clip here, though many thousands of Doughboys came via Liverpool on their way to the France. We had a few more pictures of the Doughboys marching around town in 1917 or so back near the start of the thread a good few years back.

There's an interesting article here about the massive influx in 1917/18.

I loved the bit ...

This concern about local women and American soldiers was also reflected in editorial pieces. The Birkenhead News commented: “…it is impossible to overlook the reprehensible conduct of a large number of the young girls of Birkenhead.”[6] The Liverpool Daily Post and Mercury published an article on 3rd October 1918 ‘Liverpool Girls and American Soldiers’. The report highlighted two girls who had been charged with loitering near the American camp in contravention of DORA regulations. Police commented they had had problems with loitering in this locality.

Birkenhead girls....reprehensible conduct?... I'd never imagined that.... ;)

Of interest to me personally though is the camp at Knotty Ash as it was used again by the Yanks during the 2nd World War as a hospital and I believe after that war part of it became known as Springfield Nursing Home, the place I was born. It was finally closed and dismantled by 1960 I think, at least I have no recollection of it still being around by then, and the site became Springfield Park, but there's very little about it on the web and I think the site has now been partially submerged under the new Alder Hey development.

And not so much that picture, but vaguely connected on the general subject of the Yanks in Liverpool but during the 2nd World War, one of my old dear but long departed aunts told me that her most vivid memory was of watching the 'Colored' regiments ( the US Army was still segregated and that was their official title then) marching through town in columns in a relaxed but spectacular dancing fashion, a sort of ten steps forward and then a 360 degree turn on the spot and all done to a sort of swing/jazz music. I've seen a film clip of it years ago but can't find it today. She had nothing but good things to say about those lads that she met at various dances around town, she said they were absolute gentlemen. If anyone knows of the film clip, if you could post a link to it ta.

Gentlemen, on the subject of the Doughboys, I've just found this....

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/2FXdfKZy2sw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/2FXdfKZy2sw</a>

Starts with hospital scenes, not sure where.
3.08 St Georges Hall steps?
4.50 Landing stage then marching up into town (5.18 James Street LOHC Bridge in background)
6.02 I could be wrong, but I think maybe they're marching up East Prescot on the way to Knotty Ash, that mock timbered building in the background behind looks vaguely familiar from somewhere but I just can't place it, perhaps another old photo? (Or have I got it wrong and they in fact marching to Aintree, which doesn't make sense given the next portion of film?...))
6.42-8.00 Long sequence of Knotty Ash Station.
8.10 Landing Stage with Liver building in background.
8.36 Marching towards Wellington's Column.

After that, the rest of the footage seems to have been shot elsewhere.

Might be Sheil Road?..at the corner of Gardner's drive......would make sense of they were marching to Knotty Ash...up to Prescot Rd and turn left!

It would make sense, but I'm just not sure, I can't get a clear front view of that house on Streetview.
While it does look almost identical in architecture/design, that mock Tudor style, and the two chimney stacks and pot arrangement look similar, there is a third in that film that's not visible today though it could have been demolished at some stage over the years.
But it's that roofline, it looks a lot larger back then with those three apex's at the front and from the limited visibility through the trees of the building today, it doesn't look like they are there. But it's deffo a possibility if we could just get a clearer view of that building.

Go to the same view in Streetview ...then use the timeline to go back to 2008....the trees are smaller and its September so no leaves in the way! )

You get a better view of it in street view from Gardener's Drive - I don't think its the same building. The one on street view has these crosses in the apex(?), the old one doesn't. Also the old one is a lot bigger. Obviously as Gulley says, the old one could've been another one closer to the street and the one left was some sort of outbuilding.

Could be right with Sheil rd there, the only other similar that hits me is by Sefton park bottom of Lodge lane area.
The Sheil rd could tie in with an area of Newsham park ozzy at the start, dunno what the rear of it looks like tho.

Edit: Not sure if this is the one but defo seen one similar in that area..regardless not looking the same.

Surely there's several mock tudor beamed buildings around the Knotty Ash, and Huyton village areas?

Maybe one that still exists, maybe one that's now now gone?

I think there's only the village hall in that style left these days in Knotty Ash.

But you're right Richie, there are or have been quite a lot of mock Tudor style buildings around the suburbs and it's also possible that building has been long demolished.

I think they're standing on the corner of Paradise st and Hanover st and are looking straight through John Lewis'. They can't be further back, because the old buildings on Hanover st are not in view. But everything between there and the docks is new, completely different.

No, don't think so. The building in the park pic has two storey high arches, more like a warehouse. The sailor's home has individual windows for every floor. When was it demolished? Maybe it was already gone by the time of the pic above. Or its further to the left.

Wasn't demolished until around 1975 so Im thinking your right that it is to the left of the photographer . It's weird to see that besides the port of Liverpool building there is nothing else in that pic that stands today

I probably could of dug out an arl foto for this but its one i have never seen or even heard about, maybe a bit of a mystery surrounding it too.

The Sanctuary Stone in Castle St..new to anyone else?

Yeah. It supposedly stands where a medieval cross once stood, and represents the centre of the city.

The irony being, when they landscaped Castle Street four or five years ago, instead of having a bit of a pedestrian area there, so people could see it, the Council was obviously not talking to the roadworks department at the time, as they put a parking space there, and most days it's covered over by any amount of trade vans or cars.  Dickheads.

No, don't think so. The building in the park pic has two storey high arches, more like a warehouse. The sailor's home has individual windows for every floor. When was it demolished? Maybe it was already gone by the time of the pic above. Or its further to the left.
That's not the "pox clinic". The mission was still there till the mid 80's. We did the landscaping for Cleveland Sq...York stone pavement and setts for the road with a little fenced shrub area in the middle. It, the mission was about to be demolished while we were there...along with Kent Gardens.
