Some of my own favourites have already been mentioned here, fair play to anyone who's named Mark Hollis,Tim Buckley,Neko Case and Judee Sill.

I think i'll throw in Mark Lanegan.

Unbelievably powerful and gravelly voice.

An absolute gem to see live. Amazes me that all those idiot emo kids run around and jump on stage to get some attention, while Lanegan can just stand there planted for 45 minutes and you dare not take your eyes off of him. Best I've ever seen live, in my opinion, and I got to watch him really up close in Chicago on his last Soulsavers tour. Brilliant.

I clicked to start it and saw the Bennett/Sting banner. Nice try. I was a big Police fan but Sting is nobody's idea of a really good singer.

Incidentally, there has (understandably) been a lot of Winehouse on the radio recently. She was undoubtedly talented but nothing she sang ever moved me. I wonder if I never clapped eyes on her would I feel the same? Maybe if I only ever heard her sing and knew fuck all else about her, I might have appreciated her voice more. I don't say that to belittle her, far from it as it wasn't her fault that she got shoved in my face, but I think it turned me off a little.

How about Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile..?

My God,that guy can really sing.

Such emotion, there's times (normally after too much Red wine, late at night..) that his voice can bring me to tears.

Great voice.Great band.

Magical voice.

yeah she's really good. going to see her in november. can't believe she's 37.

anyway, my nomination is beverley knight. absolutely criminally underrated if you ask me. how she's not more widely recognised is bizarre.

Liam Gallagher. Amongst some great singers that have been posted he may be looked down on but to me he is unreal. One of my favorite bands are Oasis but they wouldnt even be close to as good as they were without Liam's voice. All great singers need that ability to be instantly recognisable and the dragging out of words gives Liam this. His voice is oasis.

This! Liam's live performances for 94-97 were amazing. Go and hunt out Slide Away from Knebworth 1996 - unreal.
