Really Good Singers
« on: September 29, 2007, 09:19:41 pm »
There are a few singers out there that are just good singers. I like good singing, it's an instrument like any other and it's nice to hear it done well. Which is why I can't stand Nick Cave, no matter how good the music may be.

So here are some examples of voices which just make me weak, darling, even if the music doesn't, really.

Aaron Neville

Karen Carpenter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvBCl3CBMXA

Any nominations?

Most of my favourites wouldn't get through the auditions in X Factor and for that I am proud.

The intro is pretty random for the song i must say, I stopped listening to it, then heard the bit at 3 mins, and thought fookin el. The song itself isn't his best either.

Much prefer this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WmRXHKmnOp8

We've been here before haven't we Corkboy? Give me the weathered rasp and the off key croon any day in place of the eight octaves, pitch perfect and em-oh-oh-oting that comes with so many 'good' singers. Like that utter shithead Joss Stone. Is that the sort of thing you meant? Marti Pellow?

That said. Some great voices do work. I posted about Sharon Jones in the 2007 thread and she can really sing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5oWJEJBmxE&mode=related&search=

Honey. Always liked listening to her.

That's a great spot. Mind you, that song don't give her much to do. I was listening to what I could remember from a random compilation album I got my hands on in the eighties, and that was one on the list, as was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTkNF_25BF4.

Nick Cave. You, Sir, are wrong.

Cave can sing just fine, try a few of the ballads. It's what kind of singing suits the particular song, which would kinda see to be the whole point to me.

Much preferable to some like Whitney Houston who seem to be on a mission to show what a great singer they are every time.

You'lll be telling me Black Francis can't sing next.

Well said, though I think Mr Corkboy was dangling some bait there.

Stuart Staples, Bob Dylan, Thom Yorke and Leonard Cohen would not meet those criteria, would they?

I think you're falling into the trap of thinking that someone is a good singer because you like listening to the music. You may like listening to Nick Cave, and I'm not stopping you. But the guy is flat, imprecise and has a bad tone. To my ears.

Thom Yorke isn't bad, actually. But he's a good example, nobody's nominee for vocalist of the year, but The Bends is one of my fave albums. Dylan is a little whiny, Cohen is almost terminally flat and I don't know who Staples is.

Not at all. The style of music the Bad Seeds play is widely varied and different songs suit different suit different singing styles. Michael Stipe shouts on 'I could turn you inside out' and sings wonderfully on 'Everybody hurts'.

Nice line in patronisation you've got though.

I don't know what it is but I never really found a female singer who has an "exceptional" voice just like some male singers are, such as Andrea Bocelli, Pavarotti, Eros Ramazzotti, (hold your breath) Jon Bon Jovi to some people, etc.

Oh and this year Robert Plant came to Malta and he's definitely the best singer I've ever heard live.

Grief. You're right. Singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Gladys Knight, and Billie Holliday were just wasting their time. Especially in comparison to Andrea Bocelli.

And Pavarotti was over-rated, actually. A triumph of marketing over content.
