  • Is it getting better?
Carragher started out his Liverpool career as a defensive mid. Gerrard had his best years at right mid while Scholes, an equally gifted footballer, perished out on the left for England. Some players can shift position, often under duress. Paul McGrath often played midfield before becoming an otherworldly centre half. Pirlo was an attacking mid before moving back to the pivot, same with Gullit. Vladimer Smicer played right full in a European Cup final. For a bit.

So who of our current crop do you think would flourish in a different position, right now or over time?

Did Kolo play CDM for Arsenal or was it Man City back in 2011? I think I remember him playing there at some point.

Raheem could play either wing and in the hole. Same with Markovic.

Think Sterling in the #10 will only be a matter of time. He's absolutely wasted on the wing.

I'd love to see Gerrard as a no. 9. Just once. Maybe twice.

Moreno could maybe do a job as a defensive winger in a tough Champions League clash. If we had another decent LB anyway.

I think Flanagan as a CB on the side in 352 could work. He wouldn`t be so uncomfortable defending in the wide areas either.

Markovic on the tip of the diamond especially away from home. Getting him on the ball and tell him to drive forward every chance he gets. He gets slated for his performances on the wings - and rightly so - but just as Sterling I think he`d be better in that central area when we win the ball look to transition quickily.

Allen a permanent fixture as a DM. He`s got the courage on the ball and will deliver the ball to our two more offensive midfielders quicker than Lucas or Gerrard could.

In a few years down the stretch I see Sterling as a false 9 in a 433. I know we`ll have Sturridge and Origi then but Sterling in a few years will be even better in what he does so well now which is to use that space between the lines to receive the ball turn around and cause havoc. He`ll need freedom imo in that position to fulfill his potential and to be the kind of player who`ll figure out the weak link in opposition defence and use his many qualities to hurt the opposition and make a difference for us.

His ability to turn on the ball could easily work in midfield and his speed means that even if he was out of position as a defender, he'd be quick enough to get back!  :D

In attack, well, it's pretty obvious how well he does there...

Allen would have won the square root of eff all of the aerial challenges won today by Lucas, and regularly by Steven Gerrard.

I am sorry, heart, skill, technique, nous matter a LOT. But they do not make up for physics, at least not completely. There's not a chance in heck that Allen wins a header over Bony, as Lucas did today in the last 10 minutes of the second half.

Long term i think Joe Allen should replace Gerrard as the deepest lying midfielder, and I think he'd flourish there.

In certain games Moreno could be really useful at left wing but he used to play there anyway before being converted to a full back.

Flanagan as a DM.
"I was pleased also with Peter Crouch. We have been talking to him, before and after his nose operation, to show more confidence with his heading.

Sterling as a striker, Suso and Flanagan as the deep midfielder.

Flanagan is more speculative but Suso will have to play there if he wants to make it at an elite team.

Lambert at center back. Carroll back in the day but hell of a ego dent.

Wisdom will have to learn center back as i don't think he has enough in the last thrid of the pitch to be a right back for Liverpool.
No time for caution.

I remember Enrique playing at left mid in Brendan's first season and giving a good account of himself. Maybe he and Moreno could be the new Riise and Vignal :) There also seems to be this thing about Left Backs and centre mid. Riise played as a DM at Monaco IIRC. Gareth Barry. Charlie Adam was a left back at Rangers. Aurelio played centre-mid for us a few times under Rafa. Maybe Moreno?

Most of all though, I'd love to see one of Coutinho/Sterling/Lallana/Markovic take on Kenny's old role as the creator supreme second striker #7 to Sturridge or Balotelli's #9, rather than as a #10 playing too deep. They'll have to up their goals first though.

It's a bit late for it, and I know he's done it a few times, but Johnson always looks so much better at LB.

Not sure why, maybe the playing out of position makes him focus on his game more I don't know.

I'd be happy to consider him out back up to Moreno as opposed to Enrique.

He'll be off in the summer so it's a moot point anyway.
13mins - Bournemouth have gone home. Utd kicked off anyway. Still 0-0 as Smalling passes it back to De Gea.

Henderson would make a decent Right Back with that engine. I know he played there in the Europa once or twice didn't he? And that game we won at Blackburn under Kenny when we were down to 10 and he patrolled the whole right hand side by himself was superb.

Going back years now but Gerrard's few games at Right Back in the 2000/01 season were superb, he was a force of nature. Think he played there in wins against Leicester and Everton and also Palace at home in the League Cup Semi Final and he ran the game.

Not saying it would work, but I think it'd be interesting to see:

Flanno as a CB in a back 3.
Gerrard in a striker role similar to how Totti plays for Roma.
Can as a CB.
Hendo as a wing back in a 352 formation.

Left footed players have to be more versatile because there are less of them!

Gerrard would have been a stellar wing back. I always wondered why England with their abundance of decent centre-backs  didn't try him there. It would have allowed Cole to play on the other side - solving their left side of midfield problem.

Johnson at LB, Borini as a wide attacking mid/forward rather than a central striker, Lallana in central midfield. Sterling pretty much anywhere up front. Possibly some of the centre backs could be decent in defensive midfield positions.

Wonder if Lucas could play CB, similar to Mascherano's transformation. Maybe not in the PL, even though last night brought back how good a header he is.

Sterling lookked good at RB, think he could play anywhere apart from CB and maybe DM. Gerrard obviously has played nearly everywhere and could do again.

Gerrard up front as a false 9/forward/pivot/fake 10 or whatever bollocks it's called nowadays.

Rodgers has spoken saying he could finish his playing days as a centre back. Fuck that, he is a deadly finisher.

Lucas at CB is a great call. Decent in the air as well, but most importantly, he would never switch off.

Oh and I heard Mignolet has been fantastic in training every time he was deployed on the bench. Might be onto something.
