Probably my favourite season as a Red.
Went to most of the home games that season across the League, League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup. The back end of the season was brilliant. From the despair of getting beat by Leeds on Good Friday, we were magical for the rest of the season. It culminated in the UEFA Cup Final. Because we won the CL a few years later, I think this final is undervalued somewhat. Maybe it was because we played Alaves in the final too.
The semi final 2nd leg against Barcelona is definitely a game that deserves more recognition. Anfield was bouncing that night. town was boss afterwards as well.
I'd love a season like this again. Imagine playing the FA Cup final on the Saturday, the UEFA Cup Final on the Wednesday night and then a must win league game to qualify for the CL the next Sunday. And winning all 3!
I remember the Leeds game & we we're beyond awful, i think Gary Macs free kick injury time winner a few days later in the Derby, Easter Monday gave the players confidence back, as we beat Barcelona in the semi a few days after that, without that Gary Macs winner i don't think we'd have beaten Barcelona.
That Alaves final was insane, we were comfortable went 2-0 up early doors, until they made it 3-2 then started giving sloppy goals away, there keeper should have been sent off over the penalty though.
Barry Davies got badly overlooked for most of the big games by the BBC who went with John Motson, i still remember Barry Davies commentary on the Euro 96 England v Germany semi.
