What I wouldn't give for another season like that.

What a night, my favourite of the goals was Robbies, one of the most underrated in the clubs European history for me.
Proud follower of the city's junior, and far more successful footballing side

Rome 1977
London 1978
Paris 1981
Rome 1984
Istanbul 2005
Madrid 2019

19 League Titles, 6 European Cups, 3 UEFA Cups, 8 FA Cups, 10 League Cups, 4 European Super Cups, World Champions 2019. We live the dream.

Fantastic commentary - even without nostalgia distorting the past, it really does prove that coverage back in the day was much better (makes me miss Hansen too). Davies calmly and simply describing the game as he sees it rather than forcing his personality into the coverage while trying to contrive a 'legendary' moment.

Also, I don't think Lawro by then had turned into the c*nt he remains these days.

What I wouldn't give for another season like that.

Probably my favourite season as a Red.

Went to most of the home games that season across the League, League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup. The back end of the season was brilliant. From the despair of getting beat by Leeds on Good Friday, we were magical for the rest of the season. It culminated in the UEFA Cup Final. Because we won the CL a few years later, I think this final is undervalued somewhat. Maybe it was because we played Alaves in the final too.

The semi final 2nd leg against Barcelona is definitely a game that deserves more recognition. Anfield was bouncing that night. town was boss afterwards as well.

I'd love a season like this again. Imagine playing the FA Cup final on the Saturday, the UEFA Cup Final on the Wednesday night and then a must win league game to qualify for the CL the next Sunday. And winning all 3!
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

I was 11 at the time. It's always felt like kind of the perfect age to watch a match like that. Staying up on a school night to watch a nine goal thriller. The fairytale stories of Fowler and McAllister scoring, the future promise of Gerrard, Barry Davies on commentary...always a match I like reliving.

Think that's the season I went to moat games too. Went travelling in March though so watched the run in in Thailand,  Australia and New Zealand with some very strange kick off times. Roma at Anfield Thursday,  Birmingham in Cardiff Sunday, Bangkok (Chickboys) Tuesday. What a week!

Probably the Liverpool match I've watched the most, I think even more than the 05 final. Got the video not long after and watched it all the time as a kid.

Plus one for Barry Davies' commentary on the Fowler goal. Magical stuff.

My first final in the flesh, 6 years old and was surprised by my dad with tickets at 6am then the drive over to Dortmund.

Unreal day. Still remember being used as a trophy by the man next to me when that final goal went in.

Also getting about 7 free programmes as people just grabbed boxes off the sellers and ripped them open.

Happy times. Drove straight from work the night before with a mate. Stopped in Belgium and was completely baffled as to which country I was in. I remember getting a taxi back from the game to a hotel where a friend had a room so we could crash on his floor and doing about 140 mph on the motorway with the driver acting like this was totally normal behaviour. Sobered us up a bit !

I remember the Leeds game & we we're beyond awful, i think Gary Macs free kick injury time winner a few days later in the Derby, Easter Monday gave the players confidence back, as we beat Barcelona in the semi a few days after that, without that Gary Macs winner i don't think we'd have beaten Barcelona.

That Alaves final was insane, we were comfortable went 2-0 up early doors, until they made it 3-2 then started giving sloppy goals away, there keeper should have been sent off over the penalty though.

Barry Davies got badly overlooked for most of the big games by the BBC who went with John Motson, i still remember Barry Davies commentary on the Euro 96 England v Germany semi.

Completely agree that about the Gary Mac derby goal.

Agree on their keeper. He should have seen red for the foul on Owen.

Defending wise I thought we were poor from about 15 minutes onwards. Henchoz had a pretty poor game and, iirc, he was subbed and either Babbel or Carragher went centre back in the 2nd half. It wasn't all Henchoz's fault but it was unusual for that defence of Carragher-Henchoz-Hyypia-Babbel to be pulled apart like that.

Amazing game though and one of the the most memorable in our history. Loads of mad stories of people's journey to the game. Given the size of the stadium and the small Alaves support, seemed like everyone had a ticket boxed off. Made the day in Dortmund a lot more enjoyable than other finals. Even the rain on the day couldn't spoil people's mood.

Weirdly their manager subbed off their star striker at 3-3 who'd scored a couple when they had us on the ropes.

Yes, I recall the programmes incident too. Not one of our supporters' proudest moments it has to be said. Reminded me of a similar incident at a Wrexham League Cup tie in '78.

As for the game, best final ever in my opinion. It was only when I saw Houllier dancing on the pitch after the fifth that I realised we had actually won.

Also, what a great stadium too. Pity the city of Dortmund is pretty nondescript though.

Was a fantastic night. As with most games back then, me and 2 mates watched it in The Bot in Belfast. Was always great for Liverpool games back then, especially the big ones. Went boogaloo when Geli headed in the golden goal. We ended up staying upstairs even though the club had opened. Ended up pulling a girl and brought her back to the flat with my mate. My mate went for a piss, and this girl turns round to me and really apologetically told me she actually fancies my mate and asked if I'd be pissed off if she went with him instead  ;D No sooner had she said this, there was a knock at the door. It was the girl I had a thing with  ;D All worked out perfectly.

We weren't complaining but fairly frightening as a 6 year old.

Missed the last check in to our hotel as well so had to sleep in my dads volvo estate in a lay bye.

One of my favorite moments in the match is when Moreno is subbed off (after tearing Liverpool a new one) and he is is sat behind the manager and if looks could kill. Reminded me of the Sturridge stare in the Spurs away game.
