If its just one game in Europe and the prize money is similar to the 4.5 million quid we'd have got for winning the World Club Championship then I'm sure we could fit it in.

I think he saw that last May.

And then we'll get 4th as well and everyone in the whole world can do one.

As much as I'd love a trip to Buenos Aires I don't see the point in trying to resurrect this now. I mean you can imagine what'll happen if this gets played, the winners will then want to play for the world-super-duper-series-premier-best-team-on-planet-earth-challenge-final against the winners of the FIFA world club championship! Where will it all end?

Now the FIFA world club cup is finally taking off do we really need a game between the winners of Europe and South America's super cups?

I agree.  Only thing that a trip to Buenos Aires would achieve is to distract us from our primary aim which is winning the league.  We suffered enough with all of the extra games / travel last season - why would we do that to ourselves again?

Why not play the game in Tenerife , Morocco or Florida , the are as close to being equal distance between the clubs , give or take a few thousand miles

Intrigued by the comment

"We have received a letter from Uefa that says this game has to be played," said Boca vice president Pedro Pompilio.

I remember this being mooted last November but wasn't aware this had got as far as UEFA sanctioning it and, as has been pointed out elsewhere, this won't be our responsibility in a couple of months time.

In fact, the CL Regulations covering 2004-5 do oblige us to enter "intercontinental competitions arranged by UEFA with other
confederations." (Para 1.08) but as European Champions, not Super Cup Winners and furthermore "Clubs are not authorised to represent UEFA or the UEFA Champions League without UEFA's prior written approval." (Para 1.09)

Anything to prolong the glory and all that but it is stretching things a bit to have a trophy based on winning a trophy which in turn is based upon winning another trophy...

Surely Uefa wouldn't have the authority to demand a team play that wasn't european? Maybe it means Fifa
It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here/ and i'm most obliged to you for making it clear/ that i'm not here

Liverpool won the Champions League which is run by Uefa.

This competition, should it happen, would be with Uefa's blessing and their counterpart from South America.. the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol, better known as CONMEBOL, who run the Copa Libertadores. Copa Lib is equivalent to winning the CL in Europe.

My guess is that Boca have been complaining to UEFA that we're "dragging our heels" and have received the quoted reply that they agree the game has to be played.

As I have said, though, the "qualification" for this tournament appears to be winning the Super Cup, not the Champions League. Believe it or not, UEFA also publish regulations for the Super Cup - http://www.uefa.com/newsfiles/19083.pdf - and these do not contain an obligation to represent UEFA in any tournaments...

If we qualified for the Champs league group stages automatically then we could have fit this in.

As we have two qualifiers and played way too many games last season (WC fixtures as well), then it's a game that we shouldn't play.

I would love to play this match at the Bernabeu it would be a great venue and give us the chance to pick up a nice trophy, and gain some further TV exposure, which is always handy.

Pointless match in my opinion. With FIFA's World Club Championship now looking like it is taking off and becoming a regular calender tournament there is no need surely for a match between the European Charity Shield Winners and the South American Charity Shield Winners.

If it was played 'pre-season' as well, would people really celebrate it as a real trophy? Don't think I would.

I'd celebrate alright. I bet you were one of the killjoys who didn't celebrate our famous Pirelli Cup win over Inter Milan when Steve Harkness scored a sublime goal. Ah memories!
