Connecting to home PC from work?
« on: January 20, 2017, 02:52:00 am »

 Hi gang,

Wondering if anyone knows anything like this - ideally, I would like to be able to connect to my home PC somehow from work.

Essentially, I don't want to do RDP - I'm hoping that there is a browser-based solution. I need to be able to access a writing programme from my desktop in work, so I can also write, whilst working.

No option to install on work PC... So... Am I buggered?

Google drive?

You'd have your documents stored in the "cloud", on an internet server, that you can edit at home, plus also in a browser at work.

Think he wants to use a program on the home PC. RDP is the only way I know.

There's a plugin for Microsoft Office called Google Drive plug-in for Microsoft Office that enables you to edit Google Drive documents in Word.

Have you had a look at the VNC Chrome extension?

Caveat is that I haven't used this for some time (different job now) but it always worked well when we were abroad and needed files from our office and were in an unforgiving timezone.

I'm curious as to what 'writing program' you're using?
Presumably you have access to notepad at work, or one of the cloud based solutions.
Or is 'writing program' a euphemism ;)

I'm guessing he was taking to someone about it, and the perfect solution presented itself as a sponsored advert a few minutes later?

Pay for Splashtop it's amazing, I use it on wifi, on 3G , laptop, Windows 10, android, even works on iPhone... don't tell your IT team, if you are IT you might be able to do it

There's always Teamviewer which works on basically anything Windows and free

This is key.... a lot of suggestions here are almost certainly against IT policy (if you work in an enterprise type environment that has an IT policy).

Yeah, security policy often dictates you can't take company data off site..

But team viewer lets you remote into your work PC if it's online ..

Not advocating anything, just answering the question

Yeah Teamviewer is strictly banned in my work precisely because of that in my work...

With decent tech knowledge they should provide other solutions
- Web accessible email
- issue you a laptop setup for remote work via VPN
- Print stuff? :D

If you have a need, vs a want, to work from home it isn't a question of how, it's a question of why...

We do have other approved solutions (all of the above) - Teamviewer isn't one of them, because it is not secure and can't be managed by the IT department.

Yeah. I said it works, I wouldn't approve it myself being in IT :)

The industry standard, give or take, is issue you a laptop and set up RDP. Varies by workplace, varies by IT dept... security is growing understandably, and I think bringing your own device to work is asking for trouble (any IT person worth their salt also hates issuing iDevices)

Bring your own device is becoming more commonplace as companies use Citrix infrastructures. Wouldn't call RDP industry standard any more either, not for years. I work for a local authority that's flat broke but even we've implemented VPN software onto thousands of corporate devices.
