i can tell you that searching the net using a tablet as a keyboard works awfully, you get fed up constantly having to look between devices and just send up using the tablet for everything

This only works with a few files, most of them just download to my desktop after dragging them into Chrome.

Any more ideas?

Are you using a phone/tablet or a pc.

If using atablet or phone download local cast for free. All your films torrents etc for free on the tele. Also download xbmc app for free and local cast will send all those free films to the TV without the need to download them. :)

Was looking at getting chromecast to play skygo, Netflix, iplayer, 4od and ideally YouTube/ BT sport.

Basically we do most of that with my xbox 360 at the moment but I want to free that up so it's not in the living room, but still be able to stream to the tv.

Looking into it, it seems that skygo, 4od and possibly some of the others aren't supported (apparently even if you go to skygo in your browser it blocks it being mirrored on tv).

Anyone know if there's an alternative that can do everything - don't mind paying a bit more if I have to!

Cheers

i think chromecast will do all of those except skygo, there's bugger all support of it running on a tv, obviously they want you to use your sky box for that, it's mostly for mobile devices

http://help.sky.com/tv/sky-tv-on-other-devices/sky-go-supported-devices?country=ie#!android

This is a list of devices that sky go runs on, as you can see the only real option would be to connect a laptop to your tv

chromecast will do

iplayer
netflix
bt sports
youtube

don't see 4od on the list of supported apps

I asked in the the Google Chrome thread but no luck so I'll try here. I'm currently messing around with Google Chromecast and I've worked out that you can play local mp4 files in chrome but not .avi files, though some mp4 files only play the audio with no picture. Any ideas how I can get all video files playing in Chrome, so that I can Chromecast the page on my TV?

The Chromecast extension in the Chrome browser has an option to 'cast entire screen', so you can cast whatever is on your laptop/pc/mac
screen. So you can just play your .avi in whatever program you usually watch it in and it'll cast to your tv.

Anyone able to advise the best way for me to set this up so that I can get movies streamed from my PC (upstairs) to my TV in the living room. I am only using PC, Android phone and the Chromecast on the TV.

Just a noob to this and trying to get the most out of it.

Or even point me in the right direction of a site with good info on it?

Currently £18 at Tesco plus you get a £5 credit for Blinkbox. Out of stock online but is the same price instore. Same price on Amazon too but no £5 voucher.

I think you can, but you have to jump through a few hoops.  There's an app called Mobdro that casts a bunch of sports channels, including Sky.  Its free at the moment as the casting side is beta, you have to pay once its stable though, only a couple of quid.

As for films and TV, I use Showbox and bubbleupnp, it casts all the latest films and TV within hours of them hitting the torrent sites.

I don't think either Mobdro or Showbox are on the Playstore but if google them you should find both, they're both on torrent and warez sites.

i managed to download showbox 3.4 but its quite laggy, i have a decent internet connection too. the main apk file has been removed from the creators website.

im tempted to try the free month with netflix just to compare the speed with showbox.

the showbox app looks really laid out, not sure if its something im doing thats making it laggy, im streaming it from my nexus 7.

thanks

So let me get this right...

If I get this chromecast thing and plug it into a HDMI port on my TV then it will let me send currently streaming specialist sites footy to my TV?

And all I need is a HD telly, a chromecast thingymabob, a laptop, and be using chrome?

Sounds good.

video streaming works best with sites that support it, like youtube and netflix, i doubt many of the footy streaming sites support it so far

There was a message on news-source that they are looking to support it.  Still haven't tried this yet, but is one to keep an eye on.

I agree though - I find it really useful for Netflix and iPlayer

Loads of benefits and functionality but basically from your perspective this would allow you to "cast" content e.g. stream wirelessly from any Mobile, Tablet or PC device to any screen e.g. TV or Monitor. Good info here:

One other real plus to consider is the 3 months free Google Play Music offer which also gives you full access to the new You Tube Music Key Beta which is limited to invites or Google Play subs only at the minute...boss for Chrimbo even if you do decised to jib after the 90 days

I'm loving them. Bought four now.
One will do to plug into mum's spare telly to use as a picture frame that we can upload to from anywhere.
Am currently using the desktop but might play around to find something that rotates the pics a wee bit faster.

Certainly easier than setting up a raspberry pi to do the job!

As far as I'm aware you can have as many logged into the App as you want but can only run a maximum of 2x streams at once per account

I am a bit confused about this. Looked on net/ Google but not clear to my girlie brain!

I have a 5ish year old pioneer plasma which is obviously not a smart tv and a sky hd box. I know that I can connect my iPad to the TV with HDMI lead to get other content, Netflix etc etc but frankly it is a bit of a pain and it means the iPad is the other side of the room. All our stuff is Apple. The sky box is connected to the Internet via TP link sockets.

Would chromecast work in this system to get netflix of is there another simpler way to get smart to functionality?
