Some brilliant suggestions here, cheers to everyone for taking the time to make their recommendations. I probably need to watch a few more, before I try the more difficult ones, I haven't picked up the Anime conventions yet.

That is quite possibly one of the most amazing yet upsetting films i've ever seen, anime or live action. Pure emotion and should be held up as one of the best war films ever made in my opinion. If any of you haven't seen it, you really should, and if it doesn't move you, you're a cold hearted bastard.

Ahh yes "Grave of the Fireflies", how could I forget that! One of the most powerful films I've seen, it reminds me a little of the original "All Quiet On The Western Front", but it's easy to pigeon hole it as an anti-war movie, it's so much more. A film that I'd recommend to anyone, the fact it's animated is irrelevant, just superb.

the best part of nge was the beautiful nuttiness that is rei ayanami (and her poem).

another good suggestion is GTO.

GotF is an incredibly emotionally arresting film, pulls no punches and is raw in its honesty. And as much as I rate it, to this day I haven't been able to rewatch it. It's possibly the most upsetting feature film I've ever experienced, live-action or animated.

Personally i've only watched it once since I bought it, like a lot of amazingly emotional films i now find that i'm never in the mood, considering that it pretty much reduced me to tears watching it. The missus really wants to watch it, how the fuck can I stay manly and watch it at the same time. Small corks for the tear ducts methinks.
And when you find yourself along the untrodden path
Remember me with a smile, a drink, a gesture or a laugh
And a toast for the man who loves every hour of every day
And a feast for the friends and faces met along way

Anyone heard about this new show called Eden of the East? The opening theme is from Oasis and the Ending theme's animation is pure papermotion, it looks fantastic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAEBomhwAb0

Looks like it's had a loooot of money spent on it. Should be a decent watch when the series is over.

I've only seen 2. Princess Mononoke and Death Note - loved them both.  I saw part of one with a mate years ago when we were at school and it just didn't appeal (I think it was one of the monster raping school girl variety), wish I'd stuck with them now.  I've seen plenty of people recommending Grave of The Firefiies though, so I'll be on that next.  Cheers

Just watched My Neighbor Totoro which according to Wikipedia was released at the same time as Grave of the Fireflies. I'm guessing the two films were originally shown theatrically as a double bill, which would make sense, show GotF first, then lighten things up with Totoro, would make sense to me as a DIY watch at home double bill.

Regardless, "My Neighbor Totoro" stands up well on its own, a bit of a hidden gem.

Anyway, about to give the Code Geass series a try.

Anyway, about to give the Code Geass series a try.

The first series is brilliant, the second series is awful, so don't watch it. The show moved to Sunday afternoons for the second season and so the entire plot had to be rewritten from scratch at the last minute, and it just doesn't hold up to the first series.

My avatar is from Code Geass as well. You can watch the second season if you like but you will notice it's distinctly shit, especially compared to the relative masterpiece season one was.

Whoever said you NEED to watch in Japanese with Subtitles, there are some rare exceptions. Cowboy Bebop is excellent with the English dub, and an excellent Anime to boot...

I can't believe they're making a live acton film of it, and I can't believe who's playing Spike:
http://splashpage.mtv.com/2009/01/16/keanu-reeves-to-play-spike-spiegel-in-live-action-cowboy-bebop-movie/

FLCL Is also AMAZING... (AKA Furi Kuri)...

Erm DBZ? *Hides* They're also remaking that into 100 episodes I think

It's been renamed Dragonball Kai, and so far the first three episodes are out. So far I don't think there's been any new animation or artwork in it yet.

m a huge fan of Anime and Manga comics.

Akira
Cowboy Beebop
Ghost in the Shell
Appleseed
Fulllmetal Alchemist
Ergo Proxy
Wolf Rain
Howl's Moving Castle
Origin - Spirits Of The Past
Princess Mononoke
Samurai Champloo (a very good anime)
Afro Samurai (style very similar to Samurai Champloo)
One Piece (it may be one of those long standing Anime but it's one of the oldest Anime and Manga and very different from the rest, the artwork is just amazing.) One Piece is probably my top 3 Anime-Manga

Bleach is currently back on track with a return to the main plot of the comic.

Naurto currently is going through a horrible filler phase but having read what's ahead I cannot wait for a return to the main plot in this!  Naruto the sage!!

Currently on like episode 10 of 24 in my full metal alchemist set, awesome series.  Claymore is pretty good too, kinda short and like berserk finishes with loads of unanswered questions.

Devil may cry sucked balls.

Ive heard a lot of hype about Code Geass, second series supposed to be the greatest thing ever, quite a  contrast to the frist episode of Season 1 which almost made me gouge my eyes out... but it got slightly better as the eps progressed...

Hi friend :)

Just saying, Bleach is awful now, if I told you what happens in the manga in the near future (like right now) you would probably lose all interest.

Naruto is the biggest cash cow in Japan since Dragonball Z and the animation studio has totally ruined the 'Part 2' of the series, it is indeed as you said amazing later on though. 430 chapters of buildup were completely justified when Naruto appeared in Sage Mode.

There's about 50 eps of Full Metal Alchemist but it's actually just been re-released as Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, so far 5 episodes are out and it follows the manga plot (the series from 2003 goes on it's own plot about halfway through).

DMC was made for money, I'll agree with this being shit.

As for Geass, the first series is amazing and the second series is the worst thing ever! If you ever see a sequel from Sunrise, you should automically think 'this is gonna be as shit as watching Wigan vs Bolton where the winner takes on Sunderland'. You need to watch the first 3 or 4 episodes of Geass for it to suck you in, but it's completely enjoyable once you give it a proper go.

Samurai Champloo was awesome.

Grave of the fireflies is so depressing, i remember watching with my mates and at the ending we all just sat there in shock. Amazing film, moves you so much. the message in the film is delivered beautifully.

I loved Naruto until it became filler after filler . havnt watched it in ages now. Best episode was probably when rock lee fought gaara.

Cowboy bepop = classic (great ending too).

gonna check out some of the stuff others have mentioned.

Samurai Champloo definitely one of my favorites. Afro Samurai style is very similar to Samurai Champloo.

Cowboy Bepop still rocks.

Naruto and Bleach I've gotten bored of. I read the Manga and still watch it mainly because Bleach has some nice artwork.

One Piece is still my favorite Long Standing Anime and Manga (one of the oldest also). (it's not to everyones taste though.)

Most of anime I've seen has been very average, and I've seen lots. Well, actually I sort of stopped following it one or two years back, so I'm no longer up to date. Thankfully I managed to avoid most truly bad ones (not all though...) and find some gems.

I'm a big fan of Yoshitoshi ABe, anything he touches is gold. Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze and Lain are personal favourites of mine.
Berserk is for me the one and only brilliant action manga. Well, I love 12 Kingdoms, but that's more of a shoujo really.

Cowboy Bebop, Death Note are good ones for those watching anime first time around, they don't contain that many silly quirks. Bebop's even almost episodic, which is a rarity. Monster is a good one too, but 74 EPs might be too much for some.

I loved NGE back when I was 14. I thought it was some deep shit. Then I got older and realised there wasn't any real meaning behind all the random Christian symbols everywhere. Amazing how man people that show suckered in.
Dude, you're my clone. :D Same story here really, in fact after second rewatching I strongly disliked it for a while, now I sort of like it. It's a nice middle finger to the otaku fandom.

Last decent anime I watched was The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Very funny show.. but you do need a little bit of familiarity with anime conventions to understand all the jokes.
Alright, maybe not, 'cause I hated MHS. I wanted to shoot Haruhi with a shotgun most of the time.  ;D

Looks like it's had a loooot of money spent on it. Should be a decent watch when the series is over.

So I've got down to watching this show, I'm halfway through, and it's really interesting. 12 people (the "Selecao") are given 10 billion Yen (£64.8m) in digital money to spend on 'saving Japan'. One of them is a 'Supporter' who like Judas of the 12 Apostles will kill whoever he thinks is spending their money for their own benefit. You can call a woman on your phone called 'Juiz' who will make anything you want happen (you can bribe the Prime Minister or get people killed within seconds of asking her, for a fee).

It's quite interesting as to how the Selecao spend their money so far. The main character wakes up with 8.5b left (about £56m) and his memories gone, you soon find out he's killed 20,000 NEETs and most probably felt he spent the money wrong so he tried to make a new start for himself. Another man who is a doctor knew he didn't have the intellect to save Japan but being a doctor he's spent a lot on a hospital and the neighbourhood around it, and one woman (who is clearly crazy) has killed 20,000 men by arousing them and then cutting their dicks off, making them bleed to death.

Interesting.

I'm currently up to date with the manga and this whole battle is just raging on too long and has just become filler-like. It has had some moments....uh....artwork is nice espescially
I'm only still reading it to wait for the Vizards to make their (hopefully) grand appearance and for Kisuke Urahara to kick some arse.

Last 4-5 Naruto chapter have really been dragging along, I fucking hate that Nagato twat and don't give a shit about his past, get to kicking Saske's arse and learn how to control the fox already!!!!1

I think I watched upto Geass episode 5 of the first season and started to get into it, then my external HD packed up and i've lost all my anime... haven't bothered to re-DL it.

I think the author has no idea where to move bleach on after Aizen is defeated so he's just stretching this arc over like 200 chapters it seems like...

Anyone seen Blade of the Immortal?

I've bought the the first three comics, but at 9.99 each they're pretty expensive but freakin' awesome.  I downloaded the first few episodes of the new anime a while ago but never watched them and am thinking about re-downloading em.

Anyone seen any and if so, recommend?

Highly recommended.

Having watched the 13 episodes, got to say its gotta to be one of my favourite animes (series-wise).

If you enjoy samurai-theme animes, check out Shigurui, which is somewhat similar to Blade of the Immortal, but darker and gorier.

One late autumn night, the disciple woke up crying. So the master asked:
"Did you have a nightmare?"
"No"
"Did you have a sad dream?"
"No", said the disciple.
"I had the most beautiful dream."
The master asked,
"Then why are you crying so sadly?"
The disciple answered quietly, while wiping his tears...
"Because the dream I had, can't come true..
