Anybody like Valerie June? I've been listening to her album non-stop for the past couple of days. It's awesome bluesy soully folky country type stuff and her voice does something to me that I'm not sure I should be analysing too much...

Afternoon chaps. Not been round these parts for a while. But I can heartily recommend this. Ticks all my Go-Betweensy boxes. Just so, so good

Spotted this and was going to give it a listen purely on the cover alone. Even more promising now.

There's another EP from last year which is nearly as good. Got tickets for them in London later this year on the strength of about three hours listening.Ticks all my sighing ex-indie boy boxes.

First Aid Kit have just released a cracking single about a tough subject matter. Big departure from their country stuff but still great. They did a cover version of a Jack White song on their last tour so they are clearly comfortable performing rock songs. Will be interesting to see if this their new album has more of an edge to it than the previous ones.

Have you heard The Goon Sax Cassiel? Think you might like them if you like the Go Betweens!
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

I have. Promising, but Rob F's son is only about 16. Needs more whiskers on his chin and wisdom in his brain before he becomes really compelling.

Streaming the new Conor Oberst record at moment.

http://www.npr.org/2017/03/09/519083661/first-listen-conor-oberst-salutations

It includes the same songs from last years album (which were acoustic) but this is with full band. Think it sounds great on first listen and really different.

Bought Hurray For The Riff Raff yesterday and can't wait to give that a spin as it was on in shop and sounded mega.

On balance, the XX album is probably the best I've heard so far this year, it's a big leap forward from their first two. Japandroids and Jens Lekman aren't bad but they're both a long, long way off their best work quality and consistency-wise. The Pond album sounds like it could be a monster but two things I've really enjoyed are the new Austra album, which is probably their best so far, and Novella, which sound a bit like a psychier, poppier version of Broadcast:

The Shins back with a new album. As a young music nerd I was well annoyed at them getting big after Garden State (which is a great film). Wincing The Night Away (2007) was a fantastic album either way but I didn't care much for Port Of Morrow (2012), Mercer seemed used up of ideas. Well, this album has got a lot of the early energy back. I'd say it's slightly inconsistent but songs like Rubber Ballz and Half a Million are right up there with the early stuff. Both Mildenhall and Name For You were direct hits too released as preview singles. Well in!

Also, lovely and simple play of words from the used up rock cliche "can't get her out of my head" with "can't get her out of my bed" on Rubber Ballz.

I was just going to say. It sounds like another stellar effort from them. They've tweaked their lead guitar parts to make it sound more harsh and it seems to really work. It's like they've been listening to a lot of Pavement and they've lifted that sound for their lead guitars.

Lead guitarist Matt Mondanile quit before this LP to focus on his side project so that's why it sounds a bit different I expect.

Not heard it yet but a big fan of their past work, hope it lives up to it.

Just listened through it once. It didn't knock me off my feet so I'm thinking it'll be a grower just as the first single Darling was, which I now really value.

But that Shins album. Wow. Just going back to the origins (inspired by the great songwriters like McCartney and Marr/Morrissey) and still sounding playful. I'm already nostalgic and I've only heard it since this past week.

For me there's been a few really great songwriters in the past 15-20 years that are still "active" and James Mercer is right up there with Stuart Murdoch (honorable mentions to Molly Rankin, Torquil Campbell, and possibly Adrianne Lenker and Kip Berman). Mercer's still got it.

Loads of albums from some of my favourite bands coming thick and fast. The new Spoon album is brilliant they never disappoint. The new Shins record is lovely too, I'll never tire of Mercer's voice. Just getting stuck into the new Real Estate album, few tracks in and its bloody awesome as usual, I know I'll be playing this all summer!

I'm sure there'll be some diminishing returns because it's a lot like the last album. But on early listens it's very good.

It's also well worth listening to the Horsebeach album. I really liked the first two and this is the best yet. It has that C86 jangle and the rainy, melancholy atmosphere of the north.

Half way in to the album. Reminds me of New Order a lot. And those old ass drum machines.  ;D

It's difficult to be very objective when an iconic band like that releases new material after so long.

Saw Hurray For The Riff Raff on Saturday

You must go if you get a chance

No, jazz. You fear jazz. You fear the lack of rules, the lack of boundaries. Oh look, it's a fence. But, no, it's soft.

Had a listen to the new Real Estate - some good moments but not as good as the last 2 on first listens...

Saw The Moonlandingz at IWF on Saturday, very good show, liking the album although I think they left one of the best tunes off it.

Got the remaster of Lift To Experience's album to listen to later.

Also loving Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - The French Press - title track is superb, can't stop listening to it.
