whoa that's some collection there. Always really envious of large record collections, they just look class when all lined up. No doubt there are plenty of gems in there

No idea how many mate.  I'm anal enough to alphabetise but not quite anal enough to count them.

Here it is...
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=24eamxl&s=7

I'm not trying to be snotty, but if you are serious about collecting and playing vinyl, I really would recommend getting something a bit better.

While it will do a job, that is really for just what it says on the can, simply transferring old collections to MP3 for people who threw out their old record players years ago or have never had one.

And although it might be convenient and cheap, it's not going to be particularly great which might be a shame as you'll be missing out a bit.

There are plenty of good decks/arms & cartridges on Ebay these days that will play the records and do justice to any collection far better than that.

I've got one of these, had it for almost 30 years now and it still works very sweetly and they can be picked up sometimes for well under Ł200.

I then just take the amp monitor outputs straight to a decent card on the laptop (Indigo Echo) and record using Soundforge then de-noise and normalise and save as MP3 at whatever rate I want.

I don't do polite so fuck yoursalf with your stupid accusations...

Right you fuckwit I will show you why you are talking out of your fat arse...

An old NAD jobby that I've had for about 25 years.  Kept meaning to get me a fancy Linn but never quite got round to it and this one still works beautifully in fairness.

Bit much if you just want to listen to pop music.
I guess that if your into classical music or Jazz, it might be worth the money.

I use to do a bit of DJ'ing at some raves in the 90's and had well over 1000 records at one point. Now i've knocked all that on the head i've managed to whittle my collection down to round about 300, all of which I consider to be my absolute classics and would never, ever think about selling them.

P.S I love the smell of vinyl.

Though mine looks much cleaner than the one in the image.  Reviews are accurate it is a doddle to completely strip back to nothing and just clip back together.  It is light and plasticky but it responds wonderfully to tweaking and get it set up right and it sounds great.

Saw one of them in my local record shop (it is the owners!).

Happy with mine at the moment but would consider an upgrade!!!

Who says it has to make sense?  Once it gets to a certain girth it becomes about being able to find shit and nothing more.  If I suddenly get the urge to hear the Auteurs then I know I can find "New Wave" between Attila the Stockbroker and Banco de Gaia.

Mine makes no sense at all, simply for the fact that i love looking through it all and picking stuff out I would like to hear simply there and then

Fuck all better than flicking through piece after piece and coming across something you wern't even thinking about

Was the same when i went crate digging,on carboots and hunting in record shops.

I only bought them for the covers too...

wasnt that why we all bought them!!...I knew a lad who did actually buy them and once brought  them to play in the student room at college ...oh dear!

On a more serous note... I have, after 12 months of dithering , set up all the hard and soft ware to convert all my vinyl to mp3 for ease of listening ( I have also been bought a system which plays mp3s from my PC  anywhere in the house via wireless)...anyhoo.. I reckon Ive got circa 400 lps and similar numbers of singles, mostley 1977 to late 80's (when drugs and dance curtailed my vinyl habit) prob is that with approx 500 hours of vinyl time, conveting  at 3 hours a week ( which is all work, family life and musing on LFC will allow) plus re-listening of fotgotton gems like The Associates 'White Car in Germany' which I had to listen to again 4 times...I reckon a full convert would take me around 4 years!! so do:

1 convert  selectively

2 convert all alphabetically

3 convert by random chance

4 convert by genre

I thought this computer thingy was meant to make life easier!!

My tip mate would be to use something like Hotfile Search to see if the archived digital versions are already knocking about on the net to download.  You have already purchased the copyright so in my view you don't even have a moral case to answer in downloading a digital rip.  You'll get loads done far quicker that way and then you concentrate on converting the rarities from your collection that you cannot find decent copies of elsewhere.

What's your wireless streaming system btw?  Interested in setting something like that up myself.

Cheers, I did think about just downloading the tunes , however, I want to listen to my vinyl, scratches, blips , jumps an all...didnt John Peel say the scratches where the sound of life or something similar?..my 7 inch of ATV's 'Life' sounds like it was recorded on sandpaper...but thats cos I played it to death and still love it....isnt the thing about our vinyl  is we connect with it emotionally, becouse of how , the time and place Lp's or singles came into our lives.. not just the music?...unlike mp3's and dare I say CD's?

Its a Phillips Stremium Network Music Player missus got me it for Chrimbo...still havent got it fully sussed yet , but the sound quality is boss and a digi radio.

Btw even if I converted all my vinyl I would never sell them....have you seen that bit on the BBC site about the Album club in London , you go along a people play Lps  from start to finish...its a fight against shuffle

Fair enough on capturing the full beauty of that vinyl.  I am still bogged down getting MP3 copies of the cassettes I have accumulated over the years.  I can still play vinyl in the study and have been having loads of fun selecting 7"s from the late 80's to take to a 40th birthday bash next weekend.

Does the Philips thingie let you stream internet radio into any room as well then mate?

Does the Philips thingie let you stream internet radio into any room as well then mate?

I decided to junk loads of cassettes last year during  a 'nostalgia purge' ....plus I knew the quality would be shite if converted a lot was radio to tape and I have to admit a lot of JP stuff

yes it does and to be honest its took my eye of the ball converting vinyl , its brilliant 100's of stations..Reggae straight from JA!  loads to recommended :WFMU-FM 91.1/Jersey City, NJ; 90.1/Hudson for one

so whats your fave  party tunes then?....Come on Eillien? Agadoo?  or maybe a Leonard Cohen Mix seeing your turning 40 ( the worse Bday ever btw ...you will never be able to say your age with confidence and sound youthfull ever again like a thirtysomething can   :P )

I take it you'll pm the invites!!

I liberated a load of them from my Grandad's house last year. Curse my Mother and her siblings for having a shite taste in music.
