Cracking thread, I have always loved listening to Jazz on the radio and stuff but in terms of educating myself I didn't really know where to stand, some good ideas and suggestions on here, thanks and keep em coming!
Have been listening to lots of jazz of late and have really taken the above on board. If you had to name five must-have albums to buy (other than Kind of Blue, which seems to be a given) what would they be? I am stuck, because there seems to be so much and I can't afford to buy it all.
Thanks, Yorky. Would you avoid buying 'best of' type albums for jazz? It's tempting to buy the best of John Coltrane, for example, but part of the magic of jazz is the moment of the recording, I think, so does it spoil it?
Eh Sc ally, I don't know if you checked 'Sketches' out. If not you really should. I don't know anyone who has heard that album without having their universe a bit rearranged.

Strange I was going to post more or less the same.
I do like a lot of Weather Report stuff and Miroslav Vitous is still coming out with cool innovative things, as is Chick Corea.

Same thing happened to me, I just bought some compilation box sets of random jazz. You can also see what every song on the episodes are called by going on the Treme site, here it is for the first episode browsing the site will get you to the different episodes. http://www.hbo.com/treme/index.html#/treme/episodes/1/01-do-you-know-what-it-means/music.html
I guessing its the dixieland style you're talking about which is great but you should also check out these happenin cats. Lee Dorsey, Dr John, The Meters, Dirty Dozen, Aaron Neville and of course Louis Armstrong. Best of's for all of these lads should do the business. What episode of Treme are you at? You should check out Kermit as well he's like a real person.
Besties!!! If you like Jimmy Smith check out this fellahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APT9xJtlirs&feature=related
Can someone point me in the direction of some bands that have trombone players as the centerpiece please?
all is in excellent/NM condition. Luckily the wife has absolutely no idea how much this has cost.
... but she gets to hear a great noise. You need a bit of Mingus tho
You're absolutely right. I knew I had some more somewhere
Sun Ra needs buying of course as do The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Here's Toro... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4JpnJRzPwU
