It was ok, just a lot about the cruise liners. There's a bit about the pilot boats which I found interesting, but they could've done a bit more about the industrial site of the port - they don't mention the container part at all for example.

Another good crime one which is on iplayer at the moment: The Fear of 13.

What a great storyteller the protagonist is. Highly recommend.

Just finished it. As you say great storytelling and superb film making.

You don't have to be a Shostakovich fan, nor a classical music fan, to enjoy this. Cracking documentary on the music and history of the composer's 7th Symphony:

Agree. Utterly compelling and such a well constructed story. It took me about 20 minute, I think, to realise that it wasn't an actor telling 'the story'. Want to see the Black Panther doc next.

I watched 'An Unreal Dream - The Michael Morton Story' on Netflix last night. I thought I saw it recommended on here off the back of Serial/Making a Murderer but I can't seem to find it.

I thought it was brilliant - a man, with a wife and young child, goes out for dinner to celebrate his Birthday with the family. They arrive home and because it was his Birthday, he assumes they will have sex. She falls asleep so he leaves a note saying, 'Thanks for dinner etc... don't worry about falling asleep etc...' His alarm rings at 5:30am the next morning and he gets up, gets ready for work, has breakfast and leaves. He gets a visit from the Police to say his wife is dead. The coroner rules that she most probably died approx 01:15, which he was at home, and so he is implicated. You learn this all in the first 10 minutes, so it's not spoiling anything, just sets the scene.

It's a very emotional story, lots of highs and lows. It's quite remarkable, really. Sad and tragic.

I watched it via Netflix US as it's not on the UK Netflix. I would definitely recommend it for those following up on documentaries after the Making a Murder story.
Thanks for the suggestions. I hadn't seen this before. Wow, could be a superb movie like many of these documentaries...

Incidentally, on that podcast on Making A Murderer, the experts had questions about the reaction of Avery when he gets out after his wrongful incarceration. What I saw in this story is that Michael Morton has even a more peaceful, less angry reaction to it. Don't show this documentary to those experts, they will find something fishy about Morton, too ;D

Also, I'll be Me, Glen Campbell's final tour story (Netflix) is heartbreaking and fantastic in equal measures as he and his awesome family come to terms with his Alzheimer's disease progressively worsening . Glen is now in a very sad condition and the final recording is extremely touching. Yes there will be tears. Highly recommended for anyone who has any knowledge of the rhinestone cowboy or has loved ones with Alzheimer's.

Thanks for the recommendation Ciara.  Just watched this and thought it was terrific. As you say it definitely fits the 'If you liked Making a Murderer, you'll like this' link on Netflix. So many common themes between them.

Great double bill of documentaries on BBC4 on Wednesday Night. First up, My Nazi Legacy: What Our Fathers Did - a deeply troubling and uncomfortable documentary (in the Storyville strand) in which Philippe Sands, a prosecutor at the International Criminal Court amongst other legal roles, embarks on a journey into two men's Nazi past; they were both sons of high-ranking Nazi officers. I won't say much more because it's worth a watch as both sons reveal the extent of their father's role in the holocaust. Afterwards, there was an interesting film by AN Wilson on the life and poetry of Philip Larkin. Great few hours of television.

Both here:

I watched 2 documentaries recently that I quite liked.

One is Into the Abyss. Here is the IMDB link for it
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1972663/
Basically, the film asks the question of morality of death penalty. And it does so by trying its best not to be biased, although you could still see some evidence for the bias of the director. At the very start, he already tells where he stands, and also, he interviews 2-3 people who are of the same opinion as the director is. However, this view is appropriately balanced with just 1 opposite view. And that view is only voiced once, but otherwise, by watching the film, you get the opposing view anyway. I am trying my best not to spoil anything here. I am torn after watching this documentary. As a person who has not thankfully lost anybody to violent crime, I can sit and be humanistic about the criminals deserving (!) death penalty, however, I may change my mind if I were to lose my family to such crimes. Tough question. And the film demonstrates it as such. Some of these criminals...

The second one is Guilty Except for Insanity. Here is the IMDB link for it
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1707217/
This film is a good study of another failure of the American health care system. And the legal system, too. The Oregon State Hospital and its real (criminally insane) patients are the focus of this film. It turns out, sometimes, only crime will get you help if you have mental problems. And once you get in this Hospital, then, you may stay there forever...

Unfortunately, can't help you, but Swiss TV did a great documentary about Sherpas a couple of years ago. 3 parts with roughly 55 minutes each and all on youtube (link to the first part: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3UQmGws5HY). Sadly, it's only available in German, but well worth a watch for everyone who's interested in the topic and speaks German (not a lot here I'd guess). It is simply insane what those guys do and how "easy" it is for the Western guys to climb Mount Everest. Not saying that it's not a big achievement to reach the top, but it's nothing in comparision to the Sherpas hauling tons of stuff up to the various camps, so their "guests" can eat, sleep and survive...

The Nick Broomfield and Dan Cruickshank docs on iPlayer are worth a watch.

Liverpool features in both. Hate the way great buildings are left to rot for commercial gain.

What did you think of it?

I vaguely remember it in the news years ago. Was very interesting I think, sad all round though.

It was pretty well done. Ultimately decided by your views of children, the role of prison etc.

All underlined by a society unprepared to accept people for who they are - whether they be a student, juror or teacher. A society where we absolve responsibility for the children we produce and determine effective action in terms of a twenty or fifty year jail sentence.

The one I probably felt the most sorry for was the teacher who gave him the dress. Whilst I felt it fair they didn't give the perpetrator a voice, we can but hope his evident thirst for education will help rehabilitate him.

Just watched it on the recommendation

I'm left with mixed views -

Spoiler
I feel some opportunistic parading by some of the participants (some of the witnesses and Mariah who admitted to teasing him - fair play though for admitting it).  The story is tragic, the neo-Nazi theme was exposed and then kinda dropped.  No doubt Brandon was troubled and damaged and Larry represented a lot of what he thought was wrong.  Some of those teachers though should never be allowed near evolving minds - The starbucks teacher was misguided a bit giving larry a dress given the circumstances - I empathise with her as she felt she was doing the right thing

It just got madder and madder as it went along, really couldn't believe what I was hearing when the 3 jurors were talking after the trial, just incredible.

Thanks for recommending it anyway mate.

Virunga 2014   Saw this the other night.. Great docu. worth a watch.

A group of brave individuals risk their lives to save the last of the world's mountain gorillas;
in the midst of renewed civil war and a scramble for Congo's natural resources.
Virunga is a stunning film, part nature documentary,
part gritty exposé of the realities of life on the ground in the Democratic Republic of Congo,
a country that has been torn apart by conflict for thirty years.

ESPN's 30 for 30

OJ - Made in America

As of Wednesday PM in the UK there have been 2 episodes aired that I've downloaded

A magnificent documentary that blends a number of racial, social, political and cultural elements into the portrayal of a complex and compelling character

Can hardly wait for the next 3 episodes in this opus

Its truly documentary at its finest
