Ah yes, Newcastle in the 5-1 win. Charlton when? 3-0 win just before Christmas?  I was at a wedding that day, never saw it!

You associate with people who get married Mid-season?  :o

Don't know pre 1984 but in order of whether I was confident they were going to score since then:

1.)  Neale.
2.)  Souness
3.)  Milner
4.)  Molby
5.)  Murphy

That's ridiculous. If your naming 5 then how can you miss out Jan Molby?

Used to always stick it in the same corner though (bottom left).

What was Fowler's penalty record like?

I know it was better than Owen's but my recollection was that he missed a fair few. I was pretty sure it was Owen and Fowler's penalty spot woes that saw the likes of Murphy, McAllister, Litmanen and Gerrard take pens around 2000-2003.

Any top 5 has to contain Neal, Molby, Gerrard and Kuyt in my opinion. Dirk has to be in there for scoring 2 pens against The Ev, including a last minute winner.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

Jan Molby the same.

Dirk was usually quite reliable too

All our players who have taken more than 5 penalties (in normal time) since 1966:

Mark Walters 6 out of 6 = 100%
Danny Murphy 8 out of 8 = 100%
James Milner 7 out of 7 = 100%
John Aldridge 17 out of 18 = 94.44%
Jan Molby 42 out of 45 = 93.33%
Gary McAllistair 5 out of 6 = 83.33%
Steven Gerrard 47 out of 57 = 82.46%
Terry McDermott 16 out of 20 = 80%
Dirk Kuyt = 8 out of 10 = 80%
Robbie Fowler 20 out of 26 = 76.92%
Phil Neale 38 out of 52 = 73.08%
Alec Lindsay 8 out of 11 = 72.73%
Tommy Smith 22 out of 32 = 68.75%
Peter Beardsley 4 out of 6 = 66.67%
John Barnes 10 out of 15 = 66.67%
Kevin Keegan 11 out of 17 = 64.71%
Micheal Owen 13 out of 23 = 56.52%
Ian Rush 3 out of 6 = 50%

Shows how big pens effects your mind.  Didn't even have Aldo.  The 2 pens that come to mind are the only one he ever missed in the Cup Final and the one where we brought him on as sub in his last match to take the pen.  Had Souness who only took 4 penalties but my memory of him smashing it home in the 84 Euro final played with my head.   Surprised I didn't stick Barney Rubble down, although he never took one in normal time.

Danny Murphy only took 8?

i am shocked at that. felt like a lot more

my favorite story is one match Terry McDermott was taking one and somebody threw a lump of muck at him causing him to miss. if i was around back then id be livid but listening about it now sounds hilarious

Murphy, Gerrard, Milner and Kuyt.

The rest during my time of watching (about 98 onwards) have been pretty rubbish. Owen was absolutely useless at them, became beyond a joke that he carried on taking them.

It amazes me that this is basically one of the very few areas in football that is absolutely tangible in terms of a simple statistic (penalty success percentage) that should be leading a decision (choosing the penalty taker) and management still will just blindly continue to pick a penalty taker based on... feeling? :D

Thankfully, I think why Milner is taking them is because we finally have a management team aware of that fact and picking the most statistically successful person at this skill. Presumably judged in training.

Owen had a terrible record. I know his last season about 5 penalties were missed. Diouf missed one in europe (Ljubjana?), Gerrard at home to Fulham, Owen at southampton and possibly another. Heskey missed one at blackburn.

The full season Kenny was back as manager we missed an absolute hatful of penalties no including shoot outs. Kuyt vs Everton and Arsenal, Carroll vs Chelsea, Downing vs chelsea, suarez vs sunderland and brighton, adam vs wigan. Might have been others too

Most of Phil Neal's misses must have been before 83/84.  The only 'miss' I remember was when he hit the post and put away the rebound, but was disallowed (nobody else touched the ball).

I said earlier that Molby always put them in the same corner, which is probably a load of shit after looking at how many he scored.  I do remember though when he first came and for around the first 6, he did put them in the same corner.  We then played QPR and we were drawing 2-2 with not a lot of time left.  I thought to myself, he'll go for the same corner again and the goalie will suss him, which he did and he saved it.  Probably never put it in the same place again though.

Totally forgot his penalty of hatricks, the league cup one against United and the Auxerre one.

As for Mark Walters, I can't remember any of them goals.  Didn't think he did anything apart from his goal against Auxere.

That Kuyt one against Arsenal was absolutely excruciating as well, we battered them in that first half and ended up losing! I've rarely felt as sick about a loss as that; top four was over and Kenny's brief stint felt it too.

I genuinely can't remember the one against Everton.

The thread isn't about the best though, it's about your favourite.  So I'll have Alan Kennedy.

With Jerzy Dudek being my favourite stopper.

the arsenal one aswell the keeper saves but kuyt practically has an open goal yet seems to dawdle forever and the ball is cleared. i was going nuts at the time. we easily could have scored 7 that day, we absolutely battered them. then they score a last minute winner and win 2-1.

The Everton one we won 2-0, suarez and carroll scored. at 0-0 suarez was fouled, Kuyt stepped up and hit it hard and low but Tim howard saved it real well.

Molby was excellent. only 3 times missed. 2-2 with QPR which ruined a potential treble, 2 own goals and a missed penalty grrrrr Paul Barron i think the keeper was.

I think he missed one against Sheffield wednesday, Martin Hodge if im not mistaken but i dont know which match. Dont know what score.

the last year we won the league we battered chelsea 5-2 and he missed one that day, Dave Beasant was in goal, it was pretty much exactly like Aldridge's miss in 1988

That's my problem, just remember the big ones.  I knew he was going to put it in the same corner against QPR, as he had done all season.  Can't remember his miss against Chelsea at all, probably because we battered them and won the league anyway.  If he hadn't have missed in the QPR semi, I probably would have had him second, behind Alan Kennedy.

With Aldo, we were probably 4 or 5 up at the time anyway.  Apart from the one time he did miss.

Big pens for me, are the true rest, Gerrard I can't remember missing a big one for us. Dirk for the Derby and to send us to Athens. Gary mac got some crucial ones in the cup treble.

Owen and Suarez  were the pits. Redknapp took some all of unsaveable if I remember right.

No time for caution.

Balotelli's penalties are the best. Period. But Stevie and Fowler were the best of our takers.
For recent players Balotelli and Benteke are  brilliant pen takers.  If I had my house riding on a pressure penalty it would be Dirk for me,  so cool under pressure.

As am a newer entry into this, followed Liverpool from 2003-04 I guess when I dint know much about English Football and just liked the name Liverpool and the commentator compared LFC with the current England team etc..

For me, goes without saying Steven Gerrard stands up there. When he steps up to take an important Penalty, you can be assured that its going to be a goal. I also like him for the fact that he missed a penalty against Blackburn rovers which eventually led to the ouster of Roy Hodgson.

Anyways dont have a top five list. I will put it as Gerrard Milner and Kuyt.

All our players who have taken more than 5 penalties (in normal time) since 1966:
If the cut-off date were 1965 Billy Stevenson would be up there.
He started in 1965 and scored a few after that.
According to LFCHistory.net, he scored 8 out of 9 (89%).
