I was never a big fan of Ramos and I fear he won't get into my favourite players bracket anytime soon either, but credit where its due, he's proven to be a very good CB since he left the RB position, as well as recapture his partly lost aura as a massive goal threat in set pieces. He may be not the most intelligent player out there, but his commitment and passion are there for all to see, and quality-wise he doesn't have to envy anyone.

As for the top 5 CBs in the world, of course form and luck always play their part in football and can easily turn heroes into villains and viceversa in just a few weeks, but  I would say that Pique and Ramos have to be up there if only because of their skill, hierarchy and experience. If they are in tune I cannot think of any couple being better for a first-tier competition

Hummels is decent, he had a terrific game vs Madrid in the second leg. But first leg? Dear God, they could have conceded 10 goals. It was similar last year as well, they were extremely lucky to knock Madrid out.

Hyperbole much? Last season, first leg they completely twated Real in Germany. Second leg you must remember the Real Madrid barrage when they scored the 1st and 2nd one and totally forget the chances missed by BVB on the counter.

This year in the first leg, yes Madrid could have scored more but Dortmund could have scored at least one. Second leg, yeah Di Maria missed the penalty early on and would have been a different game but after that, they should thank Mkhitaryan for being totally useless in front of goal. They were this close to cause a major upset.

As for Ramos, dude has won everything now in club and international football. Had an excellent year and easily among the best right now. Bit premature to label him as one of the best in his era but still time for him to change that. Let's not forget some howlers he had in some big games/ the red cards or some suspect positioning at times.

Not my favourite defender by any stretch, not even now, but a pretty good one most of the time.

Messi in fact doesn't have a recognizable trait.

Mate, this is not a discussion of Dortmund's game, this is a discussion of Hummels' performance. Dortmund created chances, fair enough. But I am only talking about chances Dortmund conceded because we are discussing Hummels. What does that have to do how many chances Dortmund created?

Dortmund are a counter attacking team. A very leaky one for a counter attacking team. Hummels was great in the second leg vs Madrid, as I said, but at the same time, the Dortmund defense gave away so many chances last season and this season, I am not convinced by Hummels. In fact, Barca are rumored to be interested in him, and I am not sure if he is worth the interest. He may be, I am not completely sold.

I cannot think of many top CBs right now.

Well, my OP looks terrible now, eh ?

He is much better as CB imo, and while not the greatest of defenders, he is an incredible footballer, leader and character. Skrtel-esque on set pieces as well  ;)

Never lacked ability this boy, but what he has become now is a pivotal figure for Real.  Maybe it took some big personalities leaving over the years and the marginalising of Casillas but Ramos is now a leader for Real.  He drives them forward and, as is the case with big players, he showed at the right time last night.  Great header.  Bear in mind it was a packed penalty area with literally seconds to play and he gets his head on that ball and gives it almost perfect direction.

Another great send off before he joins United again.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

He scores so many big goals.

Does anyone know off the top of their head...

1) how many times he's scored against Barca?
2) the same but for Atletico
3) how many goals he's scored in semi finals and finals
4) how many of these are headers

Essentially what I'm asking is, have any commentators done their homework for this (and if so can you copy it for me please ta!)

yes, he was great free kick taker. just like Koeman, who had 193 goals in 535.

Read last week that Terry's got more career goals than Iniesta too strangely enough.

Hierro was quality but many of those goals he scored them as a midfielder in the early 90s.

Steve Bruce scored over a 100 goals.

Just looked on Wiki and he scored 19 for United in the 1990-1991 season. ::)

Did he take pens?

Yeah he did. Think he scored a few in their Cup Winners Cup run against some stellar names too.

There you go: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990–91_Manchester_United_F.C._season

11 out of 19 were pens (including a couple against us, one in the League and one in the League Cup).
