The Aussie Thread
« on: February 4, 2009, 11:15:38 am »
Based on the number of posts and interest in a previous thread on Australia I thought it might be worth having a specific thread for Aussie RAWKites, people after info on Oz and basically for us who now live here to explain to others why it's the dog's bollocks.

I'll start it off and We'll see how it goes eh?

I can't believe that the World is in recession and everyone is tightening their belts and what does the Aussie government do? It announced yesterday that it's going to give almost every family a $950 dollar minimum handout, woo hoo! I don't yet know all the ins and outs of this but I fuckin' love this country.

Its great innit ! $21,000 handout when you buy your first home. $4,000 for every kid you have and now $950 to go out and spend to boost the economy   ;D

Can you imagine the above in the UK  :o

$950 is fuckall for someone earning $80k (maximum income allowed for the handout). It won't do a dent to the trillion dollar problem the entire world is facing. The money should have been invested in new industries creating new jobs. Apparently 800,000 people are going to be jobless in the next 18 months so how is $950 going to fucking help?

BTW, anyone knows if SBS are showing the FA Cup 4th round replay vs Everton?

Can't wait to get the handout...

Whats everyone gonna do with it??

Are you gonna do the 'right' thing and spend it to pump cash back into the economy?

Save it?
Or pay off debt?

Mine is going straight on the car loan.. Not the most responsible thing to do community wise, but its a good thing for me..

I will need a Holden SS company car and 60k though.

It's boss. Just bought a new house, they gave me $21000. Had 3 kids $1000 1st, $3000 2nd, $4000 3rd. They pay 50% of my childcare, gave me $3000 grand at xmas saying please spend it, giving me more cash next month, plus i get a shit pile back in my tax every year. it's unreal.

The new stimulus package is a bit of a fucking joke. The government should really be trying to directly create jobs. Investing in the school system will help but fixing the rail system which is a fucking disgrace would be even more helpful and create plenty of jobs. Some infrastructure investment to help with the water shortage might be an idea aswell. Giving permanent tax cuts would increase confidence a plenty.

Handing out $950 is nothing but a short term debt builder for the nation. I'm no Liberal supporter but Labour are trying to bluff this thing through the parliament. Turnbull is risking his future by opposing this package because you have millions of Australians who have their ears up now because they heard the possibility or receiving some cash and will want his head for trying to stop it.

However there real reason it's shit is that I'm not getting any of it.  ;D

Never been mate so I can't really argue the case. However, I have a few questions - How much do you get for the first home buyers purchase? do you get the first few thousand earnings tax free? Are you about to receive your second no strings attached fairly substantial handout for nothing? what's the weather like?

I hope the move went well mate and youre now settled.

Just got back from Oz. We went on a trek down the East Coast! I met a fella I worked with on Eggborough Power Station in Port Douglas, a complete coinsidence he was there at the same time. Crazy small planet we live in. I would love to go back and work there. Off to Amsterdam first then might start looking at Oz.

....it is insanely hot, even by Australian standards, out here at the moment. I'm going through 2 shirts a day just from sweat, and I'm indoors most of the time. Been 40 C plus in Wagga for much of the last 2 weeks, just got into Bathurst the other day, and though its slightly cooler in terms of temperature, the humidity is killing me.
