Didnt see that coming. Good news.

Really? Journalists were talking about it since around the end of the transfer window. And yes, this could've been sarcasm that I failed to notice :)

From the point of view that I don't think a lot of people expected him to sign a new contract, not that one was offered.

Fair enough, just thought the club wouldn't leak the news about a contract offer unless it was close to being a done deal

This is brilliant news. I really believe Sakho and Gomez will be the defensive partnership we are crying out for. Please, Brendan, play them!

Thuram: "France's future is secure with Varane and Mamadou Sakho. They are among the most naturally-gifted young defenders in Europe."

Marcel Desailly on Sakho: "It was crucial for him to have moved. With focus and discipline, he has enough talent to surpass myself easily"

I know which opinion I value most. I don't think there's a person in football I disliked more than Evans, an absolute parasite of a person.

Thuram and Desailly. Two of the best defenders of their generation.

Tony Evans. One of the shitest journos on Mersey side.

I know who's opinion I trust.

Good news but I would like to see him really prove himself now, he's been in and out for nearly 2 years with injuries and what not, needs to start justifying the esteem in which he's held and find the consistency to cement his place.

Genuinely surprising news. By far our best CB, yet consistently sidelined by the manager. Extremely happy with this. Presumably it means he's going to feature more regularly...

Don't want to be a downer, but are we sure this isn't just a Suarez/De Gea-style contract with an ironclad buyout clause next summer?

This is a man who left his boyhood club because he wasn't 1st choice.  Why would he commit to LFC for the next 5 years with things going the way they are for him here?  Smells fishy to me.
Managers who have won fewer than three European Cups: Ferguson, Mourinho, Guardiola, Saachi, Hiddink, Hitzfeld, Clough, Happel, Trapattoni, Cruyff, Michels, Lobanovsky, Capello, and many more.
Managers who have won three or more European Cups: Bob Paisley

Maybe he wasnt playing as his future was in alittle doubt?  ??? If here for the longterm see no reason not to start... Otherwise he really needs a new agent.
Sterling wasn't dropped until the Stoke game.

All football contracts are effectively that now a days.
Some don't have release clauses it's true so that varies but if a player wants to leave the reality is it's impossible for a club to keep them
You can be reasonably confident that if he isn't in the first team he'll move in the summer but then that was the case before he signed the contract - basically he gets a pay rise now, protects his future if he does stay and we guarantee we get full value for him if he moves

Maybe he is happy to sit on the bench picking up his pay cheque every week ;)

Seriously though - maybe as a player he knows what the situation in unlike the DAWKites who probably wank themselves to sleep every night dreaming of a CB pairing, that isn't going to happen anytime soon, and slating the current manager every chance they get as a result

Same thing was leaked about Ilori at the start of the summer which came to nothing.

I'm not too worried on this one, without his injuries he'd have retained his place. If he stays injury free he'll cement his starting place this season.

Fantastic news!

I didn't think it would happen. So now I'm hoping to see another thing happen I'm not expecting:

Clyne - Gomez - Sakho - Moreno

And while we are at it make Sakho the captain rather than just a soldier.
