Pleasantly surprised this has happened, but delighted nonetheless. He's our best CB and should be playing every game and should also be the VC if not the captain.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

All Gomez has to do is start walking down the stairs towards Skrtel and Skrtel will back down the stairs on his own.

Aye, but Sakho would run up those stairs with giant crazy legs steps and they'd smash together like a particle accelerator. A particle accelerator on two fives.

And maybe create a black hole which sucks Lovren and Skrtel into another universe.

Had doubt whether he'll sign, but he does. Hopefully this will convince the manager that he's committed and rewarded with the trust of the manager, too.

I like him easily our best CB and defender when he stays healthy, and a leader in the team as well.

Just need him to stay healthy and for Brendan to keep him in the team.

Apart from the fact that I think he's our best defender, albeit for the occasional cock-up, he comes across as being a brilliant bloke and a thorough professional who must be great to work with.Fellas like him are worth their weight in gold...great news that he's signed ..hope he becomes one of the club's real heroes...huge flag for him  awaits??

What? Not just one bit of feel good news in RAWK but two when you add the return of Humongous D.

Sakho is a far classier player than he looks because he appears inelegant, almost in a Traore manner but the comparisons stop there. He's a type of defender who does more than that because the lad can pass a ball and start an attack. He now needs a decent run in the team at the obvious expense of Lovren and there's every chance we might finally get some solidity at the back. It all seems obvious to many of us on here and for the life of me, I can't see why the manager hasn't/doesn't see it.

Made up Sakho has signed a new deal. Wouldn't be as keen behind Lovren in the pecking order. Hopefully he's back in the team Sunday.

He is a good player and miles better than Lovren (and Skrtel) but i am not as convinced by him in terms of being a supposed top defender than many of the people on this site.

Its good that he has signed a contract though. Thats pretty much all our major players having signed contracts in the last 12 months so we can put off those contract conversations for a while.

I hear this alot on this site, but I would like to know what a top defender looks like for you?  Who in your opinion is a better defender, Terry, Smalling, Managala I mean who are we saying is a better defender then he is?

I made a similar point to this the other day.  Arsenal finished above us with Mertersacker, Koscielny, Chambers and Gabriel.  United finished above us with Blind, Smalling, Jones, Evans and Blackett. Which of those players would people take over Sakho?

Whenever I try and draw out why people think he's not very good they can never give me a specific reason or example to back up their statements. All they ever say is "he's a liability" or "accident waiting to happen".  I'm still waiting for these accidents because I can't recall a game where you can say Sakho was directly at fault for a goal or that he played badly for the majority of time he was on the pitch.  I can't say the same for Skrtel or Lovren.

Sakho's passing is his strength but also a weakness because he tasks risks in passing the ball out in the way that he does and that sometimes leads to us conceding possession. There are times when he should just clear his lines or put it out for a throw in but he nearly always tries to find a team mate in midfield.  I think making better judgements in those situations would come with playing more regularly. I also think his heading when he has a time to think about it can sometimes can be a bit off.  There was one in the Bordeaux game where he conceded an unnecessary corner. I also think he sometimes goes to ground too much when he tackles but these really are nit-picking.  He's a good defender with the attributes and potential to be a great one. If only he could stay clear of injuries.

Nice one, must be on good terms with Rodgers again

Was he ever not? Outside of the derby walk out of course.

This new contract was planned for a while. Sakho obviously a key part of our side, I'd be inclined to believe Rodgers has either stuck Lovren in for his aerial ability in such a tight rigid system or its to test Sakhos mentality being out of the side before giving him a new contract.

Whichever it is, it's clear he was always considered a key part of the squad as you can be sure this contract has been planned for a while.

Decent player, but has a mistake /lapse in him like the other two.

Glad he's signed up mind but plenty to improve on.

Who doesn't though? There isn't a centre back in the league who isn't prone to lapses and mistakes (and most of them aren't playing for teams with such poor defensive shape) but he's far and away our best centre half.

All defenders make mistakes but it is about how many mistakes they make over a series of games and how they react after a mistake is made. I also take into consideration what else the defender brings to the table, like leadership, quality distribution from the back and goals but naturally all of that is secondary to keeping the ball out of our net.

By today's standards I think he is. I seen Tony Evans comparing him to our great defenders of the past but there are no Hyypias or Hansens around anymore and if they were they'd still struggle in a side that is so poorly organised in terms of defence.

Can anyone name three centre backs in the Premier League that are better than Sakho right now? Dejan Lovren certainly isn't one, put it that way.

Sakho's potential is certainly there to reach those levels but to attain those levels he needs a quality partner.
Sakho looks absolutely world class for France and I think that has a lot to do with Verane.
