Love those old black and white pictures.

Have tried to find old black and whites of Anfield, people walking to the match etc etc, Only ever seen some at one of the shops at the albert dock, they were a bit pricey though.

Anyone ever seen such pics for sale anywhere , on internet etc?

They have quite afew in the archives of the Liverpool Echo.

The thing is, you would probably need a researcher to track them down though.

Get in touch with them, to see if any of them are commercially available.

Saying that.
If and when the new Anfield gets started, the current Anfield gets near it's end, don't be surprised if the Echo (Trinity Mirror) bring out a book about Anfield from down the years.

Apparently Sefton Park was once surrounded by gates?

Anyone got any pictures of this?

Looking at the Ghosts of WW2 thread made me have a think that when we paste up old photo's or links, perhaps if possible we should try and do a picture of the same scene from now using streetview. I posted one up in the Ghosts thread before but I'll do some here.

Here's Seaforth Road then...

It's great this.
If you move back on streetview to about here the house towards the end on the right with the chimney stacks parallel with the road is still there, and the white house to the left is also just identifiable from its chimney stacks.
I'm guessing the awning on the immediate right in the old photo with the kids on the corner looks like it might have been on what is now the Marine Pub.

Looks like you got another one right Gulley (took me hours to get that Lewis's one)...this is from the 1911 directory for South Rd.
The baker in the pic is on the corner of Albert Road.
Number 1 is nearest the river.

Isn't that princess park? ....

You are probably right, I simply googled and it claimed that they are at Sefton (You can forgive me as the last time I went there would be about 1958!, we always went to Newsham)
I've just had a wander on streetview and there are a couple of gateposts still around like here.
From what I can see it looks like there would have been originally railings as well. Look at the low wall running away from this post and you can see holes that the railings would have been mounted in.

Just seen Tsar has confirmed railings.

Sorry, forgot to answer that.

I'd seen this before

....so I was able to recognise it by those curved top windows on the first floor.
(I'm not old enough to to actually remember it looking like that! ;))

One thing I still can't find reference to is I heard that the night of that particular raid, a shelter very close by to the vicinity of Lewis's also took a direct hit and was simply filled in with all the bodies. Ever heard anything about that?

Thanks Sri and Terry.

Here's a few more from old images posted at the start of the thread..

and now

and now

and now

This one is a sod.... The original caption said this is Pall Mall with Exchange on the left so at first I thought it must be a Tates chimney in the distance but this would be confusing as the lines into exchange ran on a viaduct which would surely be on the left hand side.

But I've decided the original caption/source is wrong, Exchange is at the top right and this view is looking away from Tates and up towards Tithebarn.

so..now

You can make out the how the reconstructed warehouses retaind the original rooflines of the old building on the left in the original pic.

Don't know if this has already been thrown up but there are some great pictures of old Liverpool train stations at http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/sites.shtml

Love the shot of Dingle station.

Interesting that the former Canada Dock line looks in good shape still. If the new ground is ever built it would be nice to see it carrying passengers again.

I seem to remember Canada Dock yard being quite busy and also in use by the military quite a lot in the late 70's.

Used to drive down Derby road back then and occasionally at night glimpse rakes of warflats and lowmacs down in the yard with military vehicles on.

I expect once Melwood REME closed, there was probably no need for it anymore.

I sometimes, for a change, got the Diesel from Southport to Limestreet instead of the electric to Exchange (this was before the loop line was constructed with a direct electric route) which dropped off after Bootle Oriel road onto the Canada Dock line line and ended up via the back of Walton and then Tuebrook at Edge Hill and then onto LimeStreet. Some interesting stuff could sometimes be seen parked in this cutting waiting to be marshalled.

But yes, the line is in good shape and surely wouldn't cost too much to have a third rail put on it and integrated into the system.

They could even re-open the station at Tuebrook then.

Look closely, a leaded light window with the coal merchants name inset and a neon sign. Luxury!

The original bridge here, before it was widened for the dual carriageway improvement, used to have a big painted "Ferodo" advert for brake linings on it. As a child it was a very confusing word.

I love seeing all the old stations. I remember when I was little me and dad would sometimes go to that garage which is inside dingle station.

There's a good "Then and now" of crown street station on that site too. The red chimney that's in both photos belongs to the wapping tunnel.

Yep, and the one of the driver's eye view through the windscreen as the train leaves Lime St. Stn. is a reminder of just how intimidating it must have been for anyone new to the city as they arrived at Lime Street Station for the first time!  It looked like another planet!
