There's a photo of it in action just below my initial post mate. History captured - never, ever to be repeated.

That Hardman, "Birth of the Ark Royal" photo is actually a classic example of 50's "photoshopping".  Still a great image though.

That sounds like he glued a picture of a ship onto a picture of Birkenhead.

In fact, he only put red stuff on a white building so that it didn't detract from the white ship.

Wasn't meant to sound quite like that Jonny but I think the darkening and lightening involved more than just the white gable end.  Even the NT's own description of their photograph describes it as "retouching, mainly to darken the gable end of the house in the foreground"

As I said though - superb image regardless

Ha, brilliant thanks for that mate, never seen that image before, goes to show there was quite a bit of general darkening to "frame" the ship in the way that is so spectacular.

Bloody hell Terry, used to walk over that bridge several times a day when I worked in the Cunard Building.  I had no idea it looked like that once.  More like a corrugated steel tube now.  At least it's dry I suppose.

I think it was part of the old overhead railway line.

I worked in the Cunard Building as well mate. Avarto services selling gas and electricity over the phone or rather phoning up people and being told to fuck off 300 times a day, very soul destroying.

I should recognise that first one, as I can recall those lamps with the dolphins at the base as a child, but I can't quite place them.  Late 60's to very early 70's at a guess.
The 2nd one of the Baby Grand and the AEC A35 looks like it's taken from near the Tunnel entrance at the old Haymarket terminus, looking down Dale Street towards the River and can't be later than 57.
(I have been away for 30 years now so I could be, and probably am very wrong)

First one is defo the junction of Lime Street and London Road. I am pretty sure that clock attatched to a building on the right of the picture is still there today. You can also make out what I think is the "EON" of "ODEON" on that curved building, which must have been the old entrance to the cinema.

Second I think is the junction of Dale Street and Castle Street, reason I think that is you can clearly see it's a Midland Bank on the right, which would have become the HSBC which only closed recently. Also, is that just a little bit of Rigby's you can see on the left?

And I'm only 25 gentlemen :)

I'm well impressed.....some of you are very close!

1st one is the corner of Lime Street and London Road - photographer with his back to St Georges Hall, 2nd is London Road at the junction of Anson Street - where the Lidl is now!

Boss photos though, love all the old stuff.
