Steven Spielberg's greatest movie?
« on: December 9, 2011, 03:02:06 am »
Steven Spielberg. Undeniably one of the greatest Directors of this generation. Or do people disagree? Are some of his films overrated? Are they as good as people say? You chose. I've argued with people E.T. was overrated but maybe I am the only one.

What is Steven Spielberg's best movie to date? I've left some out some due to the numbers but feel free to post them here if you think they deserve it.

Schindlers, for pure drama. Last Crusade for pure adventurism.

How you can leave out the likes of Duel and 1941 and include Crystal Skulls is mystifying.

My apologies. I got this list from Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Steven_Spielberg_films. Duel was not on the list and 1941's ratings are very poor compared to most of his films so decided not to put it. That's the thinking behind it.

Went for Jaws, saw it again a few months back. To this day that bit where the dead fisherman pops out of the boat has me off the couch. As well Robert Shaw's speech is one of the finest pieces of acting you'll  ever see. Richard Dreyfuss was one of my favourite actors growing up as a kid, had a good sarcastic manner to him I enjoyed. Why isn't he in movies anymore? Spielberg has the tension cranked to 11 all movie long also Roy Scheider's wife is a serious MILF. Brilliant stuff all round it has to be said.

"You're gonna need a bigger boat" who doesn't love that line? :)

1941 isn't great, but is better than Indy 4 or Hook.

Schindler's list for me, is just so moving and raw. Epic.

Almost there Raiders of the lost Ark, Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan.

One of my favourites and very much underrated the is Empire of the Sun, excellent movie. I also like Munich.

I haven't seen the adventures of tin-tin yet, so no opinions on that one.

The rest are good, some more than others, but not as good as the ones I mentioned above.

He is a great Director.

He's great with most of these but Saving Private Ryan affected me most. I say that without having seen Schindler's List yet.

Glad to see some love for Munich, I thought everyone hated it. I think it's one of his best films.

Still Raiders for me though. A perfect film.

Last Crusade for me, the movie I had most fun watching as a kid.

No, wait. Jurassic Park. I loved the Last Crusade but Jurassic Park is on another level. Lived breathed and slept dinosaurs after watching it.

I'm going to say Raiders of the Lost Ark but it is almost impossible to choose, Jaws was a massive smash and a perfect execution of what it was trying to do.

*You need to add War Horse to the list btw, which I saw recently and will do pretty well.

Perfect? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it, but think about this. What would have happened had Indiana Jones never even bothered to get involved chasing after the Nazis after they had the Ark? That's right, absolutely nothing. They opened it, it killed them, the end. Indy doesn't actually do anything whatsoever to stop the Nazis in the entire movie. They basically beat him at every turn, then tie him to a pole, and then they all die. He's not even a hero in that movie, he's just some dude running after the Nazis.

It's a great movie, one of my favourites, but he's responsible for nothing in the end.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

Yeah, I've heard that before and I honestly don't care. He is after all a history teacher poking his nose in where it doesn't belong, not a superhero (which is why I don't like the sequels as much because thats what he becomes more or less) he's motivated much more by curiosity rather than heroics. And like he says, he's just making it up as he goes along.

One of the many great things about Indy is how vulnerable and fallible he is, he does try to stop them with the bazooka etc but he obviously can't stop a Nazi platoon on his bill.
