For me every team needs its' big bastard. Sometimes they are obvious like Sami was for us or Viera for Arsenal. Sometimes not so much, like Keane or Mascherano, who for me was the littlest big bastard I've ever seen play. Shearer for Newcastle.

They aren't necessarily dirty but they have that aura about them that drags the rest of the team on. When the chips are down they are the person that the rest of the team gain strength from.

For me that is what we have been missing this season and is part of the reason we have suddenly looked so brittle. Carragher and Gerrard are passionate local lads but you never see them really intimidate the opposition either physically or mentally. Carroll is 22 years old and he won't play that role just yet. But having watched him there is something in the way that he approaches the game, that he attacks 50/50 balls in the air and that he sees physical contact as not just something to be relished but a way of stamping his authority on the game.

There is alot more to football nowadays than some of the old school chop-em-down stuff you hear the ex-players come out with. But at the same time I think that even at Premier League level if you have a 6 foot 2, 13 stone guy with a real glint of aggression in his eye he can not only give the other team a few shivers but also raise the intensity of his teammates as well. Here's hoping.

If we can get Joe Cole going with any kind of form he'll be like a new signing for us, hopefully his contribution will be crossing to our Andy.

I can't believe we've just spent 35 million quid on a striker, I'm delighted. I don't mean to sound to vulgar but an outlay like that sends a huge message to the rest of the league, which is why I reckon sky are playing up the Torres move so much. They love a winner loser narrative for the eejits to hang their half developed opinions on.

So the story would have gone, Liverpool sign Suarez but the same day Torres hands in a transfer request, just when Liverpool thought they turned the corner.

Instead, Liverpool double up their front line with 22 year old 35 million Geordie monster. Feels a lot better doesn't it?

And the one of the maddest things is how much sense this actually makes. We've got 55 mil for two players who half been half arsed all season and replaced them with hungry young strikers who see the club as platform to show their worth and win some medals.

Can't wait to see Carroll blast in his first 15 yard header.
