Because even if he can only play 15-20 games next season he's probably the most technically gifted player we've got and would come in more than handy when available.

Clearly we've struggled at LB with his absence this season. With the lack of cash we have why not keep hold of him? Beats buying another left-back.

He started 13 matches this season in all competitions, came in as a sub in 10.

So these 15-20 matches you talk about, he played in those this season. Do you really think he made a big enough contribution this season? My answer is no!

In terms of appearances this season has been an absolute shocker for Aurelio but last season he was fit nearly the whole way through the season racking up 33 starts with 24 starts in the Premier League and 8 starts in the Champions League. I hope he stays next season but I'm not confident he'll be here come September 1st.

You could say the same about 10 or so other players this season. My answer would be 'no!' as well. And a lot of them didn't have injury as an excuse.

Doesn't matter, because we expect them to raise their game next season. If Aurelio can't stay fit he wont be able to contribute more than he did this season. And if he can't do that there is just about no reason to keep him.

He's a class act when fit, but the questions are:
- Can he stay fit and contribute enough?
- Who would we bring in as replacement if he left?

The mancs paid 5 million for Evra when he came, and that was a bargain. If we could do a deal like that i would be all for it! But i definitely wouldn't like another Kromkamp, Josemi, Dossena, but a left sided Arbeloa would suit me just fine as well.

I hesitate to say it on an LFC forum, but he reminds me of Denis Irwin. Apart from the fact that Fabio is left footed, it's the same unshowy neatness and calm and technical ability, and deadliness from free kicks.

tremendous player, we're such a better team with him in it. Think he scored 4 four goals for us, all away from home, all belters, and provided numerous assists in big games, Inter away, Chelsea at home last season off the top of my head. Obviously a player who seems unable to be relied upon for any strecth of time is no good for a manager though.

Shame we couldn't work something out, as the alternatives in that position at the moment are fcuking frightening.

sounds like the same issues we've had for kewell when he was leaving. as far as the past few seasons are concerned, he has been unable to stay fit and contribution hasn't been to what he should and can provide. we ought to be more concerned about who we can bring in as a sturdy replacement on a shoestring budget.

This season raises more questions about our medical staff and physios than it does about Aurelio. Before getting rid of him perhaps we should get rid of some of them. Was it ever confirmed that we brought in a bunch from Newcastle last summer? Because if so, there should be a detailed examination of them and their methods. The Aussie doctor is the best news over the past few months, and credit where it's due - he was a Purslow initiative apparently.

Would love for us to invest a few million into a Milan Lab type medical setup. Would be a great investment, and it surprises me other clubs haven't followed their lead

No great surprise really...

There is no such "machine". The Milan Lab facility uses a holistic approach to interpreting medical data as opposed to generating it. It's essentially a series of extremely complex prognostic calculations, backed up by 'commercially sensitive' specialised dietary and training regimes...
It's not that simple to put a price on nor something we can simply replicate. Aside from the technology used, the system almost certainly falls under intellectual property...

This would make sense if Aurelio was (physically) like Giggs or Scholes - can't play every game, but mostly at least fit. He isn't. At the moment Insua most needs a rest, or is having a poor patch of form, Aurelio could hit the treatment room for 2 months. He's not cost free, he's on decent wages. It appears we've offered him a 'pay-as-you-play' deal and he's turned it down. Fine; nice knowing you, but we need a more regularly available option, and a more cost-effective one.

While your digging, i want to post this:

Australia's Harry Kewell is in doubt for next month's World Cup with a recurring groin injury, his Turkish club coach Johan Neeskens has said.

Neeksens, the Galatasaray assistant coach, said it would be "very difficult" for the injury-plagued Kewell to overcome the groin injury in time for the tournament in South Africa.

Neeskens, who assisted head coach Guus Hiddink in Australia's campaign at the 2006 World Cup, has confirmed Kewell will miss Galatasaray's remaining two matches this season after aggravating the groin injury at training this week.

"Right now, I think it's going to be very difficult," Neeskens told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"Stage by stage he got better but then he fell back again. He chose to stop practising and take treatment but sometimes after three or four days and he stops treatment and starts training again, it comes back again.

"I don't know if he really is to make the World Cup at this rate. First of all it's up to himself and the doctors in Australia. If he cannot participate, it's a big loss for Australia."

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1253592/Kewell-in-doubt-for-World-Cup-after-injury

I guess everything can't be our physios and doctor fault then..

This would make sense if Aurelio was (physically) like Giggs or Scholes - can't play every game, but mostly at least fit. He isn't.

Nah Fair play to Riise, did well last year at Roma, but his last season at liverpool in terms of quality output was up there with some of the worst i've seen. Think the stat was 96 shots at goal, 0 goals (in the right end).

Be interesting to see what happens in this position.

Yep, it's easy to forget just how bad he was in his final season. That own goal was just the breaking point, especially after Rafa had been telling him in training to use his right foot in those situations.

I actually rate the Chelsea FK much higher than the one that left VDS looking like a "slack-jawed retard". In terms of eventual outcomes, the latter turned out to be the most important, but the Chelsea one was superior because it required superb vision (to see the gap), the audacity to go for it (in such a crucial match and time), and the technique to hit it so perfectly and so quickly without any time to tee it up. The 'perfect free kick' photo posted a couple of pages back is the Chelsea one.

No, he had a horrific last season with us, after a steady downwards decline over the previous couple of seasons. He's done alright at Roma, but needed to get the boot, in order to give him the kick up the arse he needed to work on his game.

I know our LB situation is desperate, but it's not that desperate. I think Rafa would rather have a stab at playing there himself than get JAR back at Anfield.
