Channel 5 snaps up Serie A rights
« on: June 12, 2007, 12:44:29 pm »
Italian football is to return to terrestrial television for the first time since 2002 after Channel Five picked up the rights.

Five is expected to air Italian football coverage from the start of the 2007-8 season later this year, with output to be made by sports production company Sunset+Vine.

Sunset+Vine, a subsidiary of Welsh firm Tinopolis, already produces cricket highlights for Five.

"The main deal is for a highlights programme, although Five do have the rights for live matches as well," said Ron Jones, the executive chairman of Tinopolis.

Channel 4 first brought Serie A football to UK television in 1992 following the move of Paul Gascoigne to Lazio and screened matches and highlights until 2002, when it dropped coverage.

The rights were picked up by British Eurosport midway through 2002, with the channel screening matches until 2005, when Bravo and Setanta Sports took over in a joint deal.

Bravo announced it would not be screening any more matches from the end of December last year because of poor ratings.

Italian football is best known on UK TV for the Channel 4 Football Italia show, presented by James Richardson.

A Saturday morning show, Gazzetta, was voiced by the late Kenneth Wolstenholme and also shown on Channel 4.

A Five spokesman declined to comment.

I've met James Richardson a few times (he's a friend of a friend) and he genuinely does not like football.

Great stuff!

Hopefully they'll take up the option of the live games and we'll also see the return of James Richardson to our screens as well.

Really pleased to see this. Should add another dimension to my world football knowledge.  ;)

I find that extremely hard to believe.

Serie A should be good next season with all teams starting level, and with the return of Juventus and Napoli things can only get hot.

great news if it happens.

next year juve, genoa and napoli return.

indeed sunday afternoons watching big guns go to naples in front of 70000 of the most intense supporters in italy should make good entertainment.  bout time napoli were back, they were pulling crowds of around 70000 in the third tier a year or two ago.

should be a cracking campaign next year and a good watch if sunset and vine have got their hands on production, given the great job of covering test cricket on 4. looking forward to it.

Was that James Richardson who was on the mic talking a load of speil before the game in Athens?

Great news. I used to love Channel 4's coverage.

What makes it even better news is that Sunset & Vine are involved, and they seem to produce top notch sports coverage.

Used to love it. This should answer a few of the 'which players should we buy ?' questions.

Remember the last game of the season when the players got stripped down to their jockstraps by the supporters ? The ponces at Soho Square would love that bit !

Loved Gazetta Football Italia as a kid before I could get Sky to watch the Spanish League and English Leagues, never been to Italy before, and even though it's pretty sad, I was dead keen to pick up a Milanese copy of the Gazetta Della Sport in Athens from a Milan fan (who turned out to be a massive Iron Maiden fan too and a top bloke) and, along with the Echo from May 25th and 26th 2005 is in my little collection pile.

Richardson is hilarious, how he wasn't picked up by anyone like ITV is beyond me as he is infinitely better than the jokers they have on for "expert" analysis.

This is great news, glad to see Seria A back on one of the main channels. Hopefully they'll pick up live matches on a Sunday evening.

I've met James Richardson a few times (he's a friend of a friend) and he genuinely does not like football.
