What a great signing.. could be just as important as Mane despite being 30 mil cheaper..

He has the 3 c's neede to be a top CB.. he is cool, calm, composed..

Will have an important role to play irrespective of Matip's availability..

Yeah they're clearly our first choice centre back partnership and both have played when fit.

I'm interested to see whether Matip comes in on the left hand side though as Lovren has been very good on the right lately, like last season with Sakho. Pretty certain Matip can play LCB too.

Sell him to China or wherever, was completely out his depth today and pretty much single handedly cost us the match, embarrassing and lazy defending every single time. He gets caught out time and time again every game and causes lovren to back to days of old

How the fuck is he starting when we have both gomez and sakho available. Would rather have a half fit matip starting every single day.

Agreed. Credit where it's due, him and Lovren have been just fine lately. The issues have been elsewhere.

As far as third choice defenders whose main role is to sit on the bench goes, Klavan has been a delightful addition to the squad since he arrived in 2016. He's not, and never has been, an elite defender. But he's good enough to come in when required and look solid, and solid he looks most of the time. Has a nice left foot too, which is a bonus.

Honestly, I'm quite fond of Ragnar.

Really good decision to replace the declining Skrtel with Klavan. At the time it seemed like a "whatever" decision, but Ragnar is a lot more suited to our style of play than Martin

He’s done alright well called upon. Just sucks for him he’s joined us at a time where our defence is always under a microscope. In other seasons he would of been seen as a shrewd piece of business

Klavan has played well lately, with a bit more asurity. I wonder if it is the pairing with Lovren that has brought this out?

Very happy to see him in the team in recent weeks, he's looked settled and composed, and the defence looks more composed too, apart form a mad 5 minutes in London obviously! But don't let that take away with how good Ragnar has been. Credit where it's due.

He is the one CB we have who doesn’t seem to get rotated at the moment.

Yes injuries play a part in that but he is the one at the moment who I think I am most comfortable with.

Not a great indictment for lovren and matip that he is potentially ahead of them at the moment but fair play to him

Why? He nearly always plays on the right! If it’s Lovren or Klavan with Matip, Matip is right. Lovren will play right when he’s with Klavan.

As for Klavan outstanding again. Seems to be a lot more proactive lately instead of reactive. He’s reading of the game seems to be the biggest improvement, he’s anticipating the pass and cutting it out or getting in front of the striker and nicking the ball. Also against Arsenal he we was bringing the ball out well and starting attacks

They're all pretty good CBs who can look good and can look bad, really wouldn't set any of the three aside as better than the others.

Quite sound isn't he? 5 million for an experienced centre half has proved to be money well spent. We've saw much more of him than most of us bargained for last summer, and a couple of games/moments asides, he's been good, noticeably in a few big matches last season.

Last season I heard a German football pundit claim that Klavan had not been near his Bundesliga form yet for us and he was surprised by that. I guess we are starting to see that level of play he expected come out these days. Maybe he is feeling more settled, or maybe it is the bit more support he is getting from midfield and the wingback? Whatever it is he is handling defending and passing with cool precision. Long may this newfound form continue!

Watching him yesterday (albeit against a team at the foot of the table) I'm reminded of Babu's sage words about the benefits of keeping players after difficult first seasons due to them acclimatising. Hopefully we're seeing the benefits. He's got decent vision on the ball, too...

As it stands, Big Klav is probably our most reliable defender. He's been very consistent the last 5 weeks or so when he's played. Seems to get back into the groove after missing games as well.

Can see him being a very important part of our defence over the next few years.

First choice CB at the moment.

He seems far more dominant in the air and his reading of the game has been top notch.
