Smith & Hughes were far more talented than that sounds.
Yes, I'd definitely agree (although I've only seen them in old video's and that).
I think Smith was so good at being the 'hard man' that people didn't see just how good a player he was. As I said before, pressing high up the pitch (gegebpressing before any smart arse gave it a name), his vision was excellent and as soon as he'd won the ball we'd be back on the attack.
Similar for Hughes, although he could do it further up the pitch.
In fact two of the best examples ever of gegenpressing was the 65 and 74 cup finals. In 74 we gegenpressed Newcastle to death.
