Your very own Liverpool best 11
« on: November 4, 2012, 06:24:56 am »
So Gerrard as picked is best Liverpool 11 so i thought i would pick mine and see what everyone else's is. Ive made mine only players that have really been playing since i started to go to games at Anfield in late 1988 so ive not included Kenny or Hansen as they were coming to the end of there careers so i never seem them in there prime except on tape or dvd.

GK Reina
RB Babbel or Rob Jones (both robbed of longer careers due to injury)
LB Risse (Johnson if you can class him as a LB now)
CB Sami
CB Carra
CM Gerrard
CM Alonso
RM Mcmanaman
LM Barnes
CF Fowler
CF Suarez (Torres and Owen at there peaks would be very hard to choose)

Reina

Rob Jones        Hyypia        Agger        Aurelio

Hamann        Alonso

Berger        Gerrard        McManaman

Fowler

Basically a post 1990's team, with Reina not really having much competition and Hyypia and Agger being the best defenders I've seen at the club, Henchoz and Carragher are probably the next best options. But a Hyypia-Agger combination at the back would have everything, would have loved them two to have formed a partnership. The only left back I could think would give Aurelio competition was Riise who, prior to his last 18 months or so here, was a solid player but I just think Aurelio was a better all round left back. Tough for the opposite flank as we've had Arbeloa, Heggem, Babbel and Finnan all of whom have been fine players for us but Jones was an awesome player for us, even though he had to retire early. He'd fit in in today's game as well and would probably be more appreciated as well.

Tough in midfield, Mascherano was good but Hamann was a better all round player who had that extra bit of nous and Alonso beside him who I think needs little explanation. I was thinking of putting Barnes in there - I only remember him as a midfielder which makes me jealous of you bastards who saw him in his prime as a winger - and he was one of my favourite players as kid even then but I think Hamann and Alonso is just about right.

McManaman was just a brilliant player, so exciting to watch and Gerrard in just behind Fowler I think explains itself. And Berger, loved watching him play for us as a kid with that left foot of his. Could have put Kuyt in there as well really, think he's always a decent option for that position. Fowler for a period in the 90's was the best striker in England, just a lethal goalscorer. Torres and Suarez just missed out unfortunately and you could make a case for either one of them.

Not a bad team I think.

GK Reina
RB Rob Jones
LB Johnson
CB Hyypia
CB Agger
CM Hamann
CM Alonso
RF Gerrard
CF Fowler
LF Suarez

I think this team would eat up attacks with Hamann in the anchoring position and score shitloads with the likes of suarez/alonso/gerrard making chances for the one and true God.

Wanted to put barnes in there..but I only supported Liverpool back in 91..barnes was a fading player..but definitely leagues ahead of suarez.

Reina

Babbel
Hyypia
Agger
Johnson

Masch
Xabi

McManaman
Gerrard
Suarez

Torres

I started following in 1997 so

Reina has basically no competition.

Glen Johnson's been our best leftback, in my opinion, in the last 15 years.

Wish we'd been able to have more from Babbel, while Sami and Agger have been my favourite centerbacks. It was hard to leave Carra out but I always preferred Sami even during Carra's peak.

Masch-Xabi-Stevie was the best midfield in the league and at times, Europe (I may be exaggerating).

McManaman was the one who always got me excited during my early days of watching Liverpool while Suarez does that for me now.

Fowler had I think only one very good season post 97 when Owen became the main man so I'm going with Torres because I genuinely think he was better for us than Owen.

There may have been better individuals at RB but that back 4 was the best defence in the league in 05-06. And that was during Mourinho's time at Chelsea. Not a bad achievement

Sad part is 9 of that team DID play together. Shows how close we were to a truly amazing title-winning team

Started watching in 98, going to games from late 99 (first game being thr 4-1 vs Sheffield Weds when Stevie scored his first but was outplayed by the superior prospect David Thompson...)

Anyway:

Reina
Babbel Hyypia Carragher Riise
Alonso Mascherano
McManaman Gerrard Suarez
Fowler
Subs: Dudek, Agger, Johnson, Hamann, Berger, Torres, Owen

Most of the side picked themselves. Suarez sneaks in ahead of Torres as he'd work in the formation. Riise is the best of a bad bunch, and picked on the basis of his first few years. Carragher sneaks past Agger and Henchoz based on his 05-08 form. Owen nipped past Mad Eric for the last spot on the bench.

Post 95 when I started watching Liverpool.

                    Reina
Babbel Hyypia Carragher Riise
     Hamann Alonso Gerrard
        Torres Owen Fowler
 Bench-James,Agger,Mascherano,Suarez,Arbeloa,Berger,Mcmanaman

Reina is a no brainer, Hyypia and Carragher had an amazing partnership, Riise just edges Aurelio. He might have had a bad last season for us but he did have a great carrier for us, Babbel was the best right back ive seen at Liverpool and a real shame he had injurys/illness, a midfield 3 of  is class with Hamann stopping attacks and Alonso spraying balls to the forwards and Gerrard clearly the best midfielder if seen play making bursting runs forward. Upfront are Torres and Owen, who despite being despicable assholes where great for us and they are joint by Fowler, the greatest natural goal scorer if seen play for Liverpool.

Hounarble mentions to Litmanen,Garcia,Johnson,Aurelio,Kuyt,Finnan,Henchoz and Dudek.

Quite incredible.

Agger offer a lot more in term of attacking and is more mobile and tchnically advance, so my other CB has to be a rock, which was a choice between Carra and Hypia, then Hypia won! Also, having Carra at his prime on the bench will provide cover for all position across backline plus cdm. So i disagree with you base on that!

Quite incredible.

It's a forum and about opinion so people will have different ones. Also JC's form has been poor for a few years now so people tend to forget him at his best. I think it is also about the best team not a collection of the best 11 players????? and i also think at least one CB should be able to play the ball out. Stevies best team was set in when he played so it leaves Hansen and Lawrenson out of the equation. For me i think a CB pairing of Hyppia/Agger is more balanced as a pairing than Hyppia/Carra and Sammi was the first CB picked no question but it's only my opinion and it's only the internet.

Opps lol, still prefer to have a Rock + a more technical qifted CB combo tho lol. Loved Carra but when it comes to Rock Hypia was the best and when compare technical ability Agger arguably one of the best IMO. Then again, if we are playing against Barcelona, I would def put Carra in his prime ahead of Agger, simply ------- Safety first!!! lol

OK I go back a bit further than the rest of you so it makes ity a bit harder to leave certain players out!  Cant believe I cant fit in Robbie Fowler and Roger Hunt (my all time favourite player) nor Xabi Alonso, Phil Neal (best penalty taker we ever had) and Steve Heighway... Litmanen may cause a few eyebrows to raise but a more "aware" player I have never seen in a red shirt.

Rob Jones           Alan Hansen         Sammi Hyypia          Emlyn Hughes

Jari Litmanen     Steve Gerrard         Graeme Souness      John Barnes

                            Kenny Dalglish          Ian Rush
