96 on Divis Mountain overlooking Belfast
« on: April 28, 2016, 02:51:24 pm »

There is a very visible "96" on Divis Mountain overlooking Belfast. Its very visible and I was very moved by it today as I drove into town.

For a few years now, someone or a few people put political messages on this mountain. I remember one being up when Thatcher croaked. I've no idea who they are, or what their allegiance. The messages are viewable from most of Belfast. Yesterday, they put this one up.

Great wasn't it.

These posts are from the Hillsborough - Inquest Verdicts - Tuesday 26th April thread:

This is Black Mountain in West Belfast. For a few years now, someone or a few people put political messages on this mountain. I remember one being up when Thatcher croaked. I've no idea who they are, or what their allegiance. The messages are viewable from most of Belfast. Yesterday, they put this one up. I can see this from my desk in work so every time I look out the window today, I'll be looking at this.

The Rock Bar on the Falls Road were all over the inquest findings on their Twitter and Facebook pages yesterday too. Good on them.

They posted this as well:

"'96' written large on the mountain in west Belfast tonight to salute the families' who never gave up... #justice"

Brilliant that. One of the guys I drink with at lunch is a Rock Bar regular, so I'll get him to pass on our thanks and gratitude.

And this is it from my desk in work

Going off the Twitter message, they mention "Ma Chara". I assume they meant 'Mo Chara', which is the alias of mural artist Gerard Kelly. He's the one mostly responsible for the large messages on the Black Mountain, and the Sliabh Dubh and Falls Road area political murals. I haven't had a chance to see it yet. Hopefully the bad weather doesn't wreck it.

The people of the bogside in Derry will know better than most what the Hillsborough families and the people of Liverpool have been through. That's a really powerful image right there.

God bless the 96. RIP.

Thanks to Sarah, Flair and all of the West Belfast crew. As I flew home to Belfast from Liverpool last night after a momentous week the 96 stood out on the Divis and people on the plane knew instantly the meaning ... and also the Bloody Sunday campaign in Derry. When Margaret (Aspinall) talked of the solidarity in our City we know it extends beyond Merseyside.
