https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/24/world/asia/kansas-attack-possible-hate-crime-srinivas-kuchibhotla.html

OLATHE, Kan. — “The Jameson guys,” as some on the staff at Austins Bar and Grill knew the pair, were on the patio on Wednesday evening. It was hardly unusual: Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, two immigrants from India, often enjoyed an after-work whiskey at the bar they had adopted as a hangout.

Adam W. Purinton was also there, tossing ethnic slurs at the two men and suggesting they did not belong in the United States, other customers said. Patrons complained, and Mr. Purinton was thrown out.

But a short time later, he came back in a rage and fired on the two men, the authorities said. Mr. Kuchibhotla was killed, and Mr. Madasani was wounded, along with a 24-year-old man who had tried to apprehend the gunman, who fled.

Mr. Purinton, 51, was extradited to Kansas from Missouri on Friday, and he is charged with premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder.

The attack, which the federal and local authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime, reverberated far beyond both states. It raised new alarms about a climate of hostility toward foreigners in the United States, where President Trump has made clamping down on immigration a central plank of his “America first” agenda. The White House strongly rejected the notion that there might be any connection between the shooting and the new administration’s sharp language about immigration.

“People are devastated,” said Somil Chandwani, a friend of the two victims who lives in Overland Park, Kan. “I wouldn’t say they are angry. They have a sense of insecurity at the moment. People are trying to find answers.”

A charging document released on Friday gave no details about the motive for the shooting. Law enforcement officials in Kansas, citing the continuing investigation and judicial ethics standards, said little about the episode.

“He snapped, and this is not his typical self,” the suspect’s mother, Marsha Purinton, said before declining further comment.

Still, the F.B.I.’s role in the inquiry suggested that officials had found some evidence that could eventually lead to civil rights charges in connection with the shooting, which occurred around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

In a brief phone interview on Friday night, Mr. Madasani described the remarks made Wednesday by the man sitting near him and Mr. Kuchibhotla at the restaurant. “He asked us what visa are we currently on and whether we are staying here illegally,” Mr. Madasani said. (Both men were educated in the United States and were working here legally.)

“We didn’t react,” Mr. Madasani said. “People do stupid things all the time. This guy took it to the next level.”

Mr. Madasani said he went in to get a manager, and by the time he returned to the patio, the man was being escorted out.

After Mr. Purinton was thrown out, Jeremy Luby, 41, a software developer, said he offered to pick up the tab for the two men, who thanked him during a brief conversation about work and cultural differences.

“It was wrong what happened to them,” Mr. Luby said. “I thought it was a nice gesture to say, ‘I’m sorry someone was being rude to you like that.’”

After the shooting began, another patron, Ian Grillot, 24, said he tried to count the shots while he hid under a table. Thinking the gunman had run out of ammunition, Mr. Grillot said, he confronted him, only to be shot in the hand and the chest.

“It wasn’t right, and I didn’t want the gentleman to potentially go after somebody else,” Mr. Grillot said in a video released by the hospital where he received treatment. “He did it once. What would stop him from doing it again?”

The shots echoed around the area, and Chris Lacross soon emerged from a store a few doors down to an unimaginable scene: an emergency medical technician performing CPR on a man lying in the doorway of the bar’s front patio, where tables and chairs had been flipped over, and someone was shouting that they needed towels.

Another man took off his shirt and applied pressure to the wound of another victim, who was writhing in pain, said Mr. Lacross, who allowed some people to use a store restroom to wash away spattered blood.

Within minutes, an emergency dispatcher, in a transmission archived by the Broadcastify website, told officers, “We’re being advised the suspect’s name is Adam, and he’s a white male wearing a white shirt with military medals.”

Capt. Sonny Lynch, the deputy chief of police in Clinton, Mo., where Mr. Purinton was arrested at an Applebee’s restaurant, said a bartender there called the police after a customer confessed to his involvement in a shooting hours earlier.

“He was talking to her — ‘I’m on the run; I’m hiding out from the law’ — so she stuck around,” Captain Lynch said of the bartender. “She just hung out there talking to the guy until he said, ‘I shot those guys, and that’s why I’m hiding out from the police.’”

Mr. Purinton was arrested without incident, Captain Lynch said, and invoked his constitutional rights. It was not clear whether he had a lawyer.

Mr. Purinton spent time in the Navy and, according to a website where veterans can list their military records, was deployed aboard the Long Beach, a missile cruiser, from 1988 to 1990. He later worked for the Federal Aviation Administration but left the agency in 2000, a spokeswoman said.

In Johnson County, Kan., at least, he has had few run-ins with law enforcement. Court records showed a limited history: a speeding ticket in 2008, as well as a 1999 drunken-driving charge that was dismissed.

A neighbor, Lisa Puckett, said that Mr. Purinton was frequently intoxicated but that news of a shooting was stunning.

“We always wondered if he might hurt himself, but we didn’t think he would hurt someone else,” she said.

The dead man, Mr. Kuchibhotla, worked for Garmin, a GPS navigation and communications device company. One of the wounded men, Mr. Madasani, like Mr. Kuchibhotla in his early 30s, also worked for Garmin, according to the Indian government. On Friday, counselors were at the company’s campus in Olathe, a hub of South Asian immigrants where 84 languages are spoken in the local school district.

Mr. Madasani’s father, Jagan Mohan Reddy, a government engineer in Hyderabad, India, said his family was in shock. He said he did not know whether he would ask Mr. Madasani, who received a graduate degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and another son living in the United States to leave the country.

“We have to think it over,” he said. “My sons are not new to America. They have been staying there for the last 10 to 12 years. This is a new situation, and they are the best judges.”

Mr. Madasani, who has been released from the hospital, said he was recovering physically and mentally. “I’m definitely doing much better, but it’s not over yet,” he said.

On Friday, Mr. Kuchibhotla’s killing and the wounding of Mr. Madasani led to a chorus of fury in India, where the attack dominated the news media to such an extent that the top American diplomat in the country was compelled to issue a statement condemning what she described as a “tragic and senseless act.”

In Washington, the White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, rejected any link between Mr. Trump’s policy agenda and the shooting, which many Indians believed might have been inspired by the president’s harsh tone on immigration.

The Justice Department is under pressure to bring federal charges in the case. Moussa Elbayoumy, the board chairman for the Kansas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the government should “consider filing hate crime charges in order to send a strong message that violence targeting religious or ethnic minorities will not be tolerated.”

Mr. Purinton was scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Austins, meanwhile, planned to reopen on Saturday.

The Washington Post has decided to out a few of the anonymous sources Trump has been complaining out. Namely the GOP heads of intelligence committees in the Senate and House who'd been asked by the White House to brief against the stories about Russia connections after the FBI refused to do it. The Washington Post also strongly hints that the new head of the CIA has been involved too. If there is something the White House is trying to cover up, they may well have just provided sufficient ammunition for those demanding a special prosecutor needs to go have a look at things.

Muhammad Ali's son detained at airport: 'Are you Muslim?'

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A lawyer says the son of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali was detained by immigration officials at a Florida airport.

Chris Mancini tells the Courier-Journal in Louisville (http://cjky.it/2lF3c4F ) that 44-year-old Muhammad Ali Jr. and his mother Khalilah Camacho-Ali, the second wife of Muhammad Ali, were arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Feb. 7 after returning from Jamaica.

Mancini says officials questioned Ali Jr. for nearly two hours, repeatedly asking him, "Where did you get your name from?" and "Are you Muslim?"

Mancini says officials continued questioning Ali Jr. after acknowledging that he was Muslim. Ali Jr. was born in Philadelphia and holds a U.S. passport.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say they "cannot discuss individual travelers; however, all international travelers arriving in the U.S. are subject to CBP inspection."

What is worrying is that officials are seemingly interpreting the laws rather than applying them. Stopping the internal flight and demanding ID when the have no jurisdiction, or detaining people who they suspect as illegally trying to enter the country, when in fact they are citizens (but are black and called Ali). Let's face it, in any profession or job there are going to be a percentage of people who believe in Trumps message. There are dickheads in this country who think he is a strong leader, and they are in responsible positions, so I am sure there are Trump supporting immigration officials and police who are itching to get on with the stuff he promised in his campaign. People are loath to compare the current situation to that of 1930's Germany, but the success of Hitler was down to his appeal to the 'ordinary man', firstly by identifying an easy to spot enemy such as the Jews or other minorities, and then by 'doing something about it' . There were no shortage of "ordinary people" who bought into the message, (look at those who betrayed their neighbours to the authorities across Europe in return for a minor position in the regime)
We have an extreme fascist thinker in Bannon, who is now seemingly controlling much of Trumps policy. He is no doubt familiar with the playbook, and has no shame in using some of the plays. You don't even have to go to the US to see how the right are using such tactics. Look at how UKIP shamelessly used Nazi inspired propaganda during the referendum - because the knew it would work. People in this country are now referring to anyone without a white face as 'illegals', regardless of whether they were born here or are here legally, the tactics are working.

Trump's Indian supporters have always been too stupid to realise that this was bound to happen.

It's a common theme across all his support- black, white, brown, etc. They pick up on one thing he says that they like whether it's putting America first, getting along with Russia, saving the coal mining industry, pushing back against radical Islam... his Indian support will die when he tries to kill the H1-B program.

Totally agree, only history proved the evil of Hitler, we don't have the benefit of history with Trump.I'm sure in the 1930s many people thought Adolf was just an outspoken chap who said what a lot of people felt. He wanted to make Germany great again, whatever is wrong with that.
Now in America they're detaining US citizens if they happen to be Muslim, might be extreme for some, but a lot of people think Islam should be outlawed , so can't disagree too much with Trump, he's just an outspoken chap who wants to make America great again.

It doesn't matter what they do, the ban will probably get thrown out because it's transparently the same ban and they're just trying to re-word it to cover the fact that it's completely bogus.

Create the policy and then try manufacture information to support it, he's basically doing everything backwards.

It's classic Trump.  Grind them down, keep doing it until he gets the result he wants.

Or alternatively - cry and whinge like a little baby until mummy and daddy give up and give him his lolipop for a bit of peace and quiet.  At least until his next kick off.

The "President" is basically hoping that the courts eventually give up and allow the ban to stand.  So it's up to the judges to stay united and put rule of law before politics.

He is just a spoiled child that is used to getting his own way. His tantrum with the media is because they won't just let him win all the time. They are depriving him of what he wants (that he equates to injustice).

Even the fake news line sounds like a child, "I know you are but what am I". He is responding to being caught in a lie by accusing the accuser of lying too. It's classic spoiled brat territory. "But he led too".

He is a child.

It's Bannon and Pence that are the scary ones.

Why Does The President Own More Than 3,000 Different Online Domains?

President Donald Trump, through his company, owns at least 3,643 website domains, according to internet records.

Of this number, 93 of them were purchased while he was on the campaign trail.

He owns IHateTrumpVodka.com, TrumpRussia.com, TrumpFraud.org, and even TrumpScam.com.

He has also laid claim to TrumpNetworkPyramidScheme.com, TrumpNetworkFraud.com, and TrumpNetworkPonziScheme.com.

We mustn't forget ImBeingSuedByTheDonald.com, TrumpEmpire.com, and LiveTheTrumpLife.com.

Luis Jorge O'Brien Covarrubias, a civil engineer in Guadalajara, Mexico, used to own TrumpEmpire.com, because he had hoped to cash in on the property. He did not know Trump had purchased the domain after he failed to renew his ownership. "What did I do?" he told CNN Money. "He's rude to people. He mistreats everyone. Now he has an empire -- in every meaning of the word."

According to Bruce Rubin, senior counselor at rbb Communications in Miami, whoever purchased the domains likely did so to stay ahead of critics. "Whoever bought those domains was already thinking those allegations might be raised. Most reputable organizations do not go out and buy these kinds of websites. Most companies are not going to engage in activities that would cause this kind of blowback," he said.

In fact, Trump used these tactics in his attempts to defend Trump University. According to one report, he registered 157 versions for related operations across the United States and Puerto Rico. The "university" fell apart following accusations of fraud in 2010. Two days after his inauguration, Trump wrote a $25 million check to settle fraud complaints, and agreed to the settlement in the days after the election outcome. In public, Trump claimed that the school had a 98 percent approval rating––he bought 98PercentApproval.com, perhaps to make his point.

Most of these domains are blank pages, but some redirect to unique websites for Trump businesses. Others redirect to sites where you can buy Proud2BeDeplorable T-shirts.

Hitler started by beefing up Germany's military in defiance of the Versailles treaty.  Now I'm not saying Trump wanting to boost nukes after years of roll backs is the same thing, but it would be a violation of existing treaties.

Hitler started by beefing up Germany's military in defiance of the Versailles treaty.  Now I'm not saying Trump wanting to boost nukes after years of roll backs is the same thing, but it would be a violation of existing treaties.
hes spoken of beefing up the military quite a bit, nobody seems to be asking why he wants to do that...

Job creation. Hitler enlarged the military as economic stimulus. Using it eventually was the inevitable outcome.

Trump wants to expand the US military and pressure NATO and other allies to buy some new weaponry from America. He wants to stimulate some made-in-USA industrial numbers.

Just watching CNN talking about the Whitehouse trying to get the FBI to say there is nothing in the Russian story. and the Whitehouse have denied the story.

And suddenly more leaks have told CNN the dates and times they chatted to the FBI and even what was said.

I have a feeling he will try to change the law saying you can't run a story with un-named sources you always have to name them.

It's so backwards and unsustainable. Instead of looking at the causes of the problems and focusing on the future to develop high tech, environmentally friendly industry and educate the young to be competitive in the likely future labour market, they want to resurrect dying industries to suit the skills of the Middle aged and take education of the masses back to the 19th century.
If you're lying, I'll chop your head off.

Why in the world would they? It's not like the republicans are going to stop... get it banned it at the federal level, until then use whatever you can

because the republicans would get a massive funding advantage? Although even if it was banned you'd just see more donations from 'individuals', like the cleaner at Bank of America donating $50k to the DNC

I'm not saying it would be easy but money needs to be taken out of politics and I think it would be very popular with the electorate if they did it unilaterally, of course the ultimate goal is public funding.

The right thing? Or do you mean the right thing according to Bernie...

There's nothing stopping individual candidates from not accepting corporate donations. But requiring all candidates to do that is pretty damn stupid. If you're fighting coal money funded republicans in deep red states,  your constituents dont really care , and you're offered donations from a solar company that wants to set up in your state/district, you'd be an idiot to say no just to appease the far left thousands of miles away

Obama, as the party’s presidential nominee in 2008, banned contributions from political action committees, as well as from lobbyists. Former DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz quietly lifted the ban ahead of the 2016 election.

It's hardly a far left idea and of course it's the right thing to do.

David S. Bernstein‏@dbernstein 5h5 hours ago

On FOX & Friends Herman Cain just said that the media isn't telling you that Trump reduced the debt $12b in his 1st month.

David S. Bernstein‏@dbernstein 5h5 hours ago

...& compared that w/Obama increasing debt $200b in his 1st month. Turns out that's from a post circulating on wacky-right sites.

David S. Bernstein‏@dbernstein 5h5 hours ago

...but if Trump tweets that stat this morning, you know where he got it.

Donald J. TrumpVerified account‏@realDonaldTrump 5h5 hours ago

The media has not reported that the National Debt in my first month went down by $12 billion vs a $200 billion increase in Obama first mo.

That was before citizens united, which kind of changed the game. And that strategy worked out really well for dems, didn't it? 900+ seats lost across the country in that time. They need to start challenging in all 50 states again. And a lot of people really don't seem to care...

Emptily repeating 'it's the right thing to do' doesn't make it so. It's a good ideal, sure. But not very practical. I'd be much concerned with ensuring they know where the money is coming in from.

I'm not emptily repeating anything, it happens to be my opinion.

So what you are saying is you don't mind them being corrupt as long as we know who is corrupting them.

Looking forward to the plans for the budget. So far, Trump has only talked about spending shitloads of money, but as far as I'm aware he has never said how he'll pay for improving the military, giving health care to everybody, giving tax breaks to companies, building the wall and other brainless ideas...
