Just read in echo players are not to stop at Melwood to sign autographs or have selfies. Apparently this has been sanctioned because of safety issues.

That's terrible that.
It's a good way to distance the players away from the young fans  :-[

They'll go round schools in West Derby instead apparently but don't know the logistics of that. Seems a shame to stop what has been the norm for decades.

If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

If replacing it with school visits then I see no great issue

I can remember the time the players parked their cars behind the main stand in the late sixties and happily signed autographs both before and after a match. Wow how times have changed.

Sad if it comes to that. I think it's important players and fans can meet without everything needing a schedule.

Not all of them were happily signing , used to be some right miserable bleeders like tommy smith ...and then the other end of the spectrum was Kevin Keegan would just stop and sign for everyone no matter how long it took him

Here's a link to the article - http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/liverpool-players-asked-refuse-autographs-12416461. It appears to be due to rising numbers of people waiting outside, as well as some incidents that have occurred recently.

"Liverpool players have been asked not to sign autographs or pose for pictures as they enter and leave the Reds’ Melwood training ground.

It has been a long tradition for fans to gather outside the West Derby training facility in the hope of an autograph - or in recent years - a selfie with one of their heroes as they arrive or depart from training.

But the numbers on what is a narrow residential road have now become a problem and several incidents in the last few months have now led to a change of policy.

As of Monday, the players will be asked not to stop for public safety reasons and to prevent blockages on the highway.

The ECHO understands that Liverpool view the health and safety of supporters as the key consideration in the matter, with the crowds gathering for autographs now causing a danger to motorists and other pedestrians on Deysbook Lane as they try to make their way past.

Most of the fans tend to be quite young so in order to ensure they get the chance to meet their heroes, the players will instead visit local schools in and around the area of the training ground to sign items for them in a safer environment.

It is believed this will hopefully give even more local children the chance to meet the players face to face.·

Whether the policy will stop other supporters hoping to grab a picture simply as the players drive in - especially foreign supporters who may have travelled long distances for a game - remains to be seen."

Maybe a bit of a ticketing arrangement for say 20 people a day to be allowed into the internal car park of  melwood between a certain time . Local schools may be a good idea but I bet it quietly gets dropped after a few months

Wasn't there something about changing the entrance/exit point because of this a while back but it got scrapped after the article about bringing the academy and Melwood together.

Seems logical if it's causing a nuisance for residents and a safety issue for the kids.

Klaven said something about people following players out of Melwood in cars in that recent video interview.  That if he notices a car following him home to turn back and report it as instructed by the club.  Ibe and Andy Carrol were both carjacked recently leaving their training grounds.

For those that don't go and stand outside Melwood after training, how do you know if there is no safety risk? The club know far more than you about what's going on and if there have been reported incidents in recent months then it makes sense. Of course it'd be great if the players were still allowed to stop outside after training but it's been shown a few times where people are near enough walking in front of cars to get autographs and hanging on to the side of them as they're about to drive off etc.

This, cos I've seen it happen loads of times. If a players car so much as touches anyone outside Melwood (especially a child) the shit would hit the fan. The player in question could face prosecution etc etc, unlikely but deffo a possibility judging by the scenes I've witnessed there.

Not been for a season or so, but there was loads of fans there last time I went. Most of the young ones went from car to car to grab as many signatures as possible, made worse if one player had stopped but was ready to move on thinking nobody else was about, then out the blue somebody makes a dive for the car.

Then there's the fellas just out to make money by selling the signed stuff on bay etc, ok not a health and safety issue but still something we could do without.

Maybe a bit of a ticketing arrangement for say 20 people a day....

And charge the public for those tickets? Its just a selfie and/or an autograph. Would be pathetic to even think of a ticketing scheme for this. It is things like this that fall under the umbrella of football prostitution.

I agree that it is a safety issue for other road users. The club is responsible for what happens within the compound walls of melwood. But what happens on the road, because of players entry and exit, and because of the road outside of melwood, could mean that the  road users may be endangered. And the club becomes indirectly responsible for this.

However, I don't agree with this. This selfie session and autograph session provides a way for fans to connect themselves with the players and leaders they adore and respect and for those fans that travel far and beyond for a small selfie or a signature. The players get an opportunity to get a rough idea about how much they are adored. This could mean a lot for a youth player wanting to make it big at Liverpool. The disconnect will only amplify now. Terrible decision.

Nail on head.

So what's the alternative?

From the top of my head..

1. Dedicated signing sessions on training days away from the Melwood road and completely inside the compound walls. It could be a timed session. Take a look at the image below. The smaller parking lot, south of the building, may be emptied during the training/signing sessions. Its not quite big and maybe, according to my rough estimate, accommodate about 150-200 people.

2. Maybe even hold autograph sessions in a school gymnasium before or after a training session. This could be regulated without posing a safety hazard for people/fans. This is what the club is proposing currently.

3. Hold community events that allows the fans and players to work/interact together. It could be anything small like playing golf (Klopp did it recently I think). Or something big like painting a wall (Sakho did it I think).

The point is, that the fans are feeling the disconnect with the players (and the club invariably) and this is an indirect cause of the empty seats, disjoint fans and a dead atmosphere on match days at Anfield. The fans should feel the connection at a much superior level as opposed to what it is now. The fans can support the club by going to games and buying merchandises. And its the clubs responsibility to reciprocate it in any way possible.

Yeah, I don't disagree with this at all.

Option 1 is clearly the best solution but does the club think its feasible? I guess they can be asked about it in the next supporter's group meeting.

Never been down to Melwood, but seeing as how bad its been described, then I'd much rather the club was pro-active. Our HSEQ at work are always on about identifying hazards BEFORE they happen. There was a report only this week of a child being killed on a driveway in Wakefield when he got ran over. If kids are running about between cars, its only a matter of time before this happens at a club somewhere. If I child was killed everyone would be jumping on the club about why it was allowed and someone could be up on a manslaughter charge.

A girl in work attended the medical centre opposite Melwood this week and she said it was absolute bedlam with all the cars, fans, media, etc. I'm not sure whether its Jurgen's variable training times combined with the medical centre growing and traffic in general getting slightly worse in Liverpool over the last 6 months, but it seems a sensible decision.

I never mentioned a payment for this just a ticketing system wherby a ticket gets you into the compound to allow you to collect an autograph or a picture , small cost to the club but if it's a health and safety issue then the club can absorb it , going into local schools would be disuptive , harder to organise , more costly and then how local is local

They're doing numbers 1 & 2. Says it in the article. And your 3rd suggestion is already being done, as you pointed out.
