Are we the only team....
« on: January 5, 2017, 08:14:03 pm »
.... to win (or maybe even just compete in) the Champions League/ European Cup while using THREE goalkeepers throughout the competition?  I haven't found any records of anybody else.

Kirkland played at home to Deportivo
Carson at home to Juve
Dudek obviously played the final and so on.

I'm just curious - hopefully somebody brainer than me will have the answer?
Luis Garcia... tries his luck........

If anyone knows this, get yourselves onto mastermind. I'd hazard a guess at yes, due to injuries and suspensions, no idea whom though
IŽll say something that might surprise you. Real life is different to computer games.
I think Nadal is brilliant. One of the top 10 ever.

Not Champions League but Cup Winners Cup 1992-3.
Four keepers in four matches.
David James, Mike Hooper, Bruce Grobbelaar and David Burrows (when Grobbelaar was sent off in Moscow).

Jesus.
He didn't get off the subs bench, but he deserved to. He was fantastic on crosses.

Real Madrid used three keepers in the 1999/2000 Champions League and won.

Bodo Illgner made one appearance away to Porto in the initial group stage. Alberto Bizzarri made a few appearances. Casillas made the rest, including the final.

For Liverpool, it was actually four keepers in three successive matches. You'd wonder if any team has beaten that in any competition.
The answer is probably Luton. They lost their keeper, Jake Findlay, to a muscle strain at Anfield and tried two different outfield players. Assuming Findlay hadn't recovered by the next game, they would have used four different keepers in two consecutive games.

ha ha - Remember the the Church sign on Brownlow Hill in the 80s - Jesus saves but Dalglish gets the rebound

and from the Archives

The original said "Jesus saves, but St John nets the rebound".

It really annoys me that we never won the Cup Winners Cup. I was heart-broken when we lost in the semi-finals to PSG (1997 was it?)

I remember real Ronaldo's Barca won it that year. Showing my age a bit there.

Me..talked about it in depth in the cup final losses that hurt the most thread. I was 8 at the time and after watching us win the FA for the first time the previous season I thought we where unbeatable.

It was live on the box, very unusual in those days for a midweek game and only in B/W I think. I was living in the Lee Park area of Liverpool at the time and was playing out right up to K/O time.

I was so excited to see another Cup Final on the telly against this team with the weird name! I was gutted when we lost, especially to a fluke goal, I realised I was a true Red at that moment, not just the glory hunter from the 65 season!

It remains the only trophy we never won, gutted about that too. Not many teams have won the lot and we could have been one of them.

Yeah, and Chelsea...bloody Chelsea...have won all three. Now, we'll never get the chance.

Imagine peak Ronaldo running at Ruddock and Kvarme!

That Dortmund final we lost was an outrageously unlucky goal to lose it. Own goal from a rebound off the crossbar wasn't it?

If by some miracle we'd have beaten PSG in that semi, we would have got shagged by that Barca team, dry anal with no tissues for afterwards either.

Yes, long punt hit the crossbar then hit Yeats and went in. It was a comp we didn't enter much to be fair, usually European Cup and UEFA Cup for us, but would have been brilliant to have won the 3 major European competitions.
