Mentioned in the transfer forum, but as it's going away for a few months thought he deserved his own thread now that it's official.

Joao Carlos Teixeira will join Liverpool's Academy after the formalities of his transfer from Sporting Lisbon were completed.

The 19-year-old Portuguese youth international played and scored against the Reds earlier this season at Anfield in the NexGen series.

LIVERPOOL FC have confirmed the signing of highly-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Carlos Teixeira.

The 19-year-old Portuguese youth international will start off at the Reds' Kirkby Academy.

The terms of the deal haven't been released but it's believed Teixeira has cost Liverpool around £850,000.

The ECHO revealed last month that the Reds were on the verge of snapping up Teixeira.

He had been on Liverpool’s radar since his stunning performance against them in the NextGen Series match at Anfield back in August.

Teixeira, who has been compared to former Portugal international Deco, opened the scoring that night with a wonderfully crafted goal in front of the Kop and since then club scouts have been tracking his progress.

He hasn’t made a first team appearance for Sporting but has trained with their senior squad this season.

Sporting’s financial problems explain their willingness to part company with the talented teenager.

Teixeira is the latest in a long line of exciting youngsters to emerge from Sporting’s Academy. The Portuguese outfit have also developed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani.

Side note. Who made that video? The first minute and 10 seconds were of him tugging at his socks and sending one over the goal.

Haha, yeah a bit shit the first half of the video, twas the best I could find unfortunately. If anyone can find a better one, by all means please post it!

Just a guess, but I would imagine that he'll be with the Reserves the rest of this year, then will probably do pre-season with the first team and maybe be on the the fringes (similar to Flanagan and Robinson this year). Good since it puts a little less pressure on our other academy players since he's a bit older.

Is there any chance this lad could make at least the bench at some point this season? He is a very good prospect by all accounts and not that young. If Shelvey,Flanagan and Robinson then why not?

Comolli was talking about him last night before the spurs game and he said not only will he be a great addition to the academy,he'll also give Kenny some thinking to do.

Hm really? I would imagine we'd leave him in the Reserves to get used to the physicality of playing in England (not saying he can't handle it, but he's only 19), and our style of play. But I guess we'll see.

The price interests me. If he is such a coveted prospect how are we getting him so cheaply? Is his contract with them running out or something? Just wondering because players like Nani and Ronaldo were sold at similar ages for far, far larger fees. Obviously it would be unfair to expect him to reach the heights either of those players have, but is he considered to have anywhere close to that kind of potential? Time will tell I guess, if he makes it into the first squad in any capacity then he will have been a big steal for us. I am a bit suspicious though of why we got him for so cheap.
