The crucial aspect of any title challenge is we need to remember that we weren't expected to do well at all. Our ambition was to break into the top four. Therefore, the further we move away from 5th, we can play our games without pressure, we aren't supposed to be challenging, go out and try to win, with just 11 games of our season left. Chelsea have the 'Special One' back, he's under pressure to win it, Arsenal bought Ozil and need to break this 8/9 year drought, Man City are the money men. While as fans we will be wishing and hoping, ultimately, if our team doesn't quite make it, there won't be quite the same post mortem as there might be elsewhere.

No-one in their right mind should be annoyed at the players if we don't make it, disappointed that we didn't capitalise on an opportunity perhaps, but c'est la vie.

Yes, the fixture list is kinder to Chelsea of the top three, but they will be in Europe still you would imagine after this round of games. Man City will have FA Cup, and re-arranged games to play together due to postponements, we can actually go above them if we beat Southampton as they don't play this weekend with the Carling Cup final, Arsenal have a difficult run of games and an FA Cup run to continue - morale, tiredness, pressure can all build in the coming weeks.

The joy of football besides the actual winning, is surely being in this position with 11 games to go. Having your football team catapult you into a dream of winning the one thing you want your team to win so much. From Hicks and Gillett, mutiny on the Kop against Havant and Waterlooville, Purslow, nearing administration, court cases, a finish of 8th in the league, a feeling that we might never get back anywhere near this sort of position. Perhaps we lose to Southampton like people have suggested, it might happen, but it won't mean that we haven't made the progress. Barring complete collapse we should get fourth. Therefore we are in a position now, where with every win, why not, allow yourself to dream of higher up the table like we have done in the past? Liverpool are back. We're marching up that hill, but some of us don't seem ready yet to sing the song, to march into battle behind the red men!

I mean perhaps we don't win the league, no worries. Maybe we can get direct qualification for the Champions League in a position of 2nd or 3rd - and really cement a brilliant season and start preparing for the new season with Champions League confirmed!

Ultimately the real excitement for me, comes from Liverpool being back. As Phase of Play says, it means so much to me, just to think of the Southampton game and get butterflies- knowing that while watching it, it will matter so much to me- and that's because of our direct improvement. It's not a game where if we win we can cut the gap to fourth to 6 points, it's a game where we can keep 4 points from the summit, or even closer to 1st, or 2nd if Chelsea or Arsenal drop.

Gerrard's goal was massively important, but if I remember correctly, Benayoun's winner against Fulham away came after the league leaders had dropped points. Imagine if Chelsea somehow manage a draw against Fulham away and we grab another last minute winner against Southampton later in the day? I think I would get kicked out of any pub I was in ;D

Great post. Bolded bit in particular needs to be stickied

Problem is, we are notoriously crap at...

I think we need to be willing to consider that we might be improving on some of our deficiencies and perhaps can look forwards not backwards :)

When you think of how much of a set-back not finishing 4th would be, i.e, potentially losing Suarez, being limited as to what caliber of players we can buy in the summer, the fact that it'll be even harder to finish in the top 4 next season with new managers of other teams getting that first season out of the way and Spurs potentially clicking/finding a proper manager, etc, it tells us how fucking important it is that we don't fuck this up! So much riding on it.

Not finishing in the top four could be a huge, huge blow at this point and would potentially kill us off for a while.

WE MUST FINISH IN THE TOP 4.

I think we've shown enough this year already to be able to attract a high calibre of player, who could watch our demolition of Arsenal, Everton & Spurs and not want to be a part of that side?!

We would inevitably lose Suarez if we didn't finish 4th though.

The CL is pretty much where the top players all want to play. Sure, there are always exceptions but more often than not it is the case.
Also being in the CL is also about keeping the top class players you have.

Our biggest obstacle would be offering attractive wages if we didn't have the financial windfall the CL attracts, but yes I do agree we would miss out on the top top players but in all fairness are we going to pay the £30+ million those players now command? I can see us spending maybe £15-20m on your Konoplyankas or Rakitics so we can get a few players for the cost one of these 'high grade' albeit signings that are signed on name and reputation I mean look at Soldado 26m & Lamela 30m? They aren't all a shambles I'd kill for Hazard or a Mata who were  upwards of 30m but to me the 'moneyball' philosphy means gone are the days when this summer we're going to try and buy any star studded players and we will be after your 'diamond in the rough' 15mil odd players.

3 away games in a row. It will be a nightmare with our defensive problems and away form.

The team has to show balls and play their socks off.. those 3 games is where out season will be defined.

We win all 3.. We will most likely win the title. We lose more than one and it will be a fight for top 4 till the last game of the season.

I'm going to really enjoy not worrying about Spurs usurping us for players assuming this season ends as it should. Also rumoured we were in for Sigurðsson again? Doubt it. But bet he's loving life at the lane. Good decsion, Gylfi!

"The players here are unbelievable – Gareth Bale is one of the best in the world at the moment – and it's no surprise that we are doing so well in the league while nights like Thursday, beating Internazionale 3-0 at home [in the Europa League], show I made the right choice.

"You ask any player and the Champions League is where he wants to be. Hopefully, we will get there but that was obviously one of the reasons for joining Tottenham rather than Liverpool."

for some reason i think this is the best chance we're gonna get to win the league for quite a while.

I mean its cyclical isnt it.

We were close in 2002/3? ish when we got 2nd.. and than 5-6 years later we were cloase again in 09.

now add another 5 years.. we're close again. Not saying we're not gonna challenge next year.. but i do believe in *signs* :o
I've got a *sign* for you...

The women's team played Arsenal twice in the space of about a week in a league game and an FA Cup game. The league game was won by four goals and the FA Cup game was lost 2-1. Fast forward to the end of the season and we were league champions.

It's on  8)

The idea is to sign the right players in the right situations. Sturridge, Coutinho, Sakho . Young, supremely talented and undervalued by their clubs.

Next signing = Javier Pastore  :hump

I spent some time (idly) going through remaining fixtures for the top 7. Not as a prediction - more as a 'what would have to happen for Liverpool to win the league that is within the realms of possibility'.

However you look at it, it's very tough!

I ended up in a situation where Liverpool had 82, Chelsea and Arsenal 81 and City 80 (Spurs with 69 and Everton/United 65 ;D )

In terms of the top 4, this was predicated on:

Liverpool drawing away at United and Southampton, but winning ALL other games (including City and Chelsea at home).
Chelsea drawing with Spurs, Arsenal and Cardiff and losing to us.
Arsenal drawing against Spurs, Chelsea, City and Everton.
City drawing against United, Arsenal and Everton and losing to us.

As you can see it's an extremely tall order ;D

I spent some time (idly) going through remaining fixtures for the top 7. Not as a prediction - more as a 'what would have to happen for Liverpool to win the league that is within the realms of possibility'.

However you look at it, it's a very tall order.

Chelsea drawing at home with Spurs, Arsenal and Cardiff and losing to us.
Arsenal drawing against Spurs, Chelsea, City and Everton.
City drawing against United, Arsenal and Everton and losing to us.

As you can see it's an extremely tall order ;D

Winning it was a tall order right back in August.  We're now almost in March and 27 matches down the line.  Still a tall order but we still have a chance.

Predictions mean nothing. We can predict all we want, but what if at least one of Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and ourselves drop points in the weekend, which is possible. What will happen to all the predictions then?

New ones will arise from the ashes of the old ones. Hell, why not? All this says is that we are in with a chance. Last time around that feeling extended until May 9...

If if if  we could play out of our skins and win say 9 out of 11 the league would be ours..now  who knows how the other clubs will  fare next season maybe this could be our best chance...still look back to 96/97 as a real chance missed...

BR should do a Paisley and pin that to that to dressing room wall......team talk done and dusted
They have life in them, they have humour, they're arrogant, they're cocky and they're proud. And that's what I want my team to be.
