Any cyclists in?
« on: September 15, 2007, 06:10:04 pm »
Advice needed please...

I'm wanting to get back in the saddle for the first time in...ohhhh.... 20 years. Need to do some serious exercise and it looks less twatty than jogging. Now last time I rode a bike regularly, thinness and lightness were all, and Campag gears and Shimano brakes were lust objects. Saddles were cut from saddle leather and only yielded to your arse after approx 4 years of neatly bisecting your sac on the way to school. Brooks was it? Anyway, I am as unacquainted with today's bike market as Rafa is with letting it lie, so if I tell you knowledgeable types what I think I need, perhaps you can steer me in the right path?

I'll be looking to spend around 300-400 max, but I'll be taking the riding pretty seriously and clocking up miles , mainly on cycle paths and the local 'velodrome' type thingy. A mixture of 'take the kids out for a ride' and 'check me, Perico mark II' type stuff.

Muchas.

I cycle, but my bike's from 1992 and worth £14, so I probably wouldn't be of much help.

I've started cycling meself

Been out 5 times in the last 8 nights been doing about 5 mile

My arse is seriously bruised as fuck, so much so I can't go out the night

My seat is a fucking nightmare, its padded but it hurts

I was thinking of strapping a pillow to it, but it would look naff as fuck

Put my ipod on and away I go

I cycle most days to get places, but for actual 'exercise' I do other stuff  'cos cycling doesn't tone the bits I want toning.

In particular it won't shift yer gut.

Fantastic mate.  Cycling's the best thing you could ever wish to do.  I love it.  But never mind buying a bike from advice on here, visit Ribblecycles.co.uk and make your own.  You can then choose what you want on it.  I've just bought a winter bike (to save my beautiful, beautiful pride-and-joy bike) from them and it was, amazingly, only £400!  For that I got a nice frame, carbon forks, guards (!), Campag groupset (!) and could choose my colour!  I had loads of saddles and pedals so that saved me a few quid but seriously, I recommend them.

Right. Just signed up for a bike ride from London to Paris in Sept

Need to buy me a bike that will cope with that, but one I can also use to get me to work and back, and for the occassional longer ride on the weekend

Any cyclists have any good bikes they can recommend?

Also, what kind of training will I need to do before the big weekend?

Get a pair of biking shorts with padding underneath. Really helps. like these:

Just put another pair of shorts on top if you don't want people to see your thin legs and other bits.

This is the correct answer. £300 should get you a halfway decent bike which you can upgrade later. Spend the rest on the likes of a helmet, gloves (very important if you want to spend some serious time in the saddle) tubes etc. Don't be tempted by mail order bikes or Halfords, what may look like a bargain will turn out to be an ill fitting heavy frame with poor components.

I think that might be a bit heavy.
