I`ll be keeping an eye out for the Irish result. Can`t stand international footy myself, but when the Irish qualify for a tournament the whole country goes on an instant high, and god knows with the doom and gloom over here these past few years, the place could do with a lift.

That right peg hits it and you see the future arc of the ball and time goes al gluey like a Dali painting, and for a second there's a 20yr old StevenGerrard and your young self cheering him on through the prism. His big smile fades in an the net is shivering and J.Hart's trying not to look grateful for the privilege of being that close to greatness

Going to have to miss the 2nd half of Lithuania-Liechtenstein for it and record the Georgia-Latvia game though, gutted.

Here's an in no way biased towards Manchester United piece from Phil McNulty on the game today:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/philmcnulty/2011/09/sofia_storm_clubs_were_banking.html

Can someone tell me the fuss about Cleverley? He looks okay, yeah. He's probably not a bad player. He is composed on the ball, after all. But he's done nothing, other than play in an United side doing well, to make me think he's any better than McEachran, Henderson, Wilshere, Shelvey, Rodwell, Barkley etc. No outstanding quality. And yet a call-up, ahead of aforementioned players.

Also, out of the two United centre-backs, gotta say that Smalling looks the better, so far.

Only one game for Suarez too.  :)

Have to say I agree with this. He's a tidy player who didn't really stand out at all at Wigan last season, yet now he's basically being touted as England's saviour. If he was Spanish, no one would bat an eyelid, but because he's English and he's got decent technique as well as being fairly composed on the ball, the hype around him is massive.  If you ask me that United centre midfield still looks weak, and I'd say that Wilshere, despite the stick he gets on here, is a far better talent than Cleverley, although he's injured at the moment.

Also agree that Smalling looks a better player than Jones.

Do you know anyone who actually goes to these games? Just interested to know, because they seem a complete waste of time, i just can't get into watching England, if they score i can't show emotion, just doesn't appeal to me.

Bulgarians... people that support lower league/non-league teams and as such have no bias for/against Gerrard, Rooney, Terry etc.

One thing I don't understand are the people that support teams like United or Chelsea, but support England, and go out and actively cheer for players they normally hate. Can't bring myself to do that.

Saying that, I still watch the England games. It's always good to see our players get a good runout (but not too much of one), and even better if they score a goal. I can't really get too excited by them though.

Ye, a few good games at Man U and suddenly he is the saviour. I'm not saying Capello wasn't right to select him but the press are overdoing things for some of Man U's youngsters considering their form for U21's and their loan clubs hardly had the press caling for them to be selected before the season started.

Just seen Jovanovic doing an interview with sky ahead of the game against Northern Ireland. Nice to see he kept his place after what happened here.
Then in the midddle out pops a smiling glen johnson pulling up his jersey to reveal a t-shirt of suarez with a text saying. "OUR SUAREZ IS A FRIEND TO ALL COLOURS!"

When I was younger I used to quite like international football. Not to the same degree that I loved the domestic game of course, but still, i'd happily watch it and occasionally, even look forward to it.

Now I just can't be bothered with it. At all. Especially qualifiers and friendlies. For me it's nothing more than an irritating inconvenience that simply means that I don't have a Liverpool game to look forward to that weekend.

Overall I guess i'd prefer to see the sides that our players are involved in doing well because that can only aid the morale for those players but beyond that, as long as we avoid any injuries i'll be happy. That's about it really.

Was enjoying a read of the Guardian's Joy of Six: European Championship qualifiers...

particularly this one:

4) Spain 12-1 Malta (1983)

Still, the Irish couldn't claim to feel quite as robbed as the Dutch. When Frank Rijkaard scored three minutes from time in Holland's final Euro 84 qualifying tie against Malta, to set the seal on a 5-0 win, a trip to France the following summer looked on. The result meant they stayed top of their group, two points clear of Spain, who had one game to play but an inferior goal difference of 11.

Spain's final match was also against Malta. They would have to beat the Maltese by 11 clear goals to pip the Dutch on goals scored. Not impossible – the piss-poor Maltese had lost 8-0 to Republic of Ireland in the game preceding their 5-0 Holland defeat – but highly unlikely. Malta had never let in more than nine in 36 years of competitive football.

Spain laboured in the opening exchanges. After three minutes, Juan Señor missed a penalty. Then after Carlos Santillana opened the scoring, Spain were pegged back by an equaliser on 24 minutes from Michael Degiorgio. Time, surely, for everyone to go home.

Or was it? Santillana completed his hat-trick by half-time, although Spain were still nine goals short of their target. Cue a second-half miracle. Hipólito Rincón scored four, Santillana another, and Antonio Maceda two in two minutes, before Manuel Sarabia made it 11-1 on 80 minutes. And then the Hollywood finish: with four minutes to play, the penalty villain Señor made amends by blasting home from close range. Cue pitch invasion, and the players chasing the crowd back into the stands.

Match finished 1-0 to Argentina. Otamendi scored. Messi was class as usual. Most entertaining part for me was the expression on the players' faces when they got the national anthems mixed up.
