How much does a football stadium cost?
« on: October 28, 2007, 02:29:05 pm »
A quick question for those who know these kinds of things - how much does a football stadium actually cost to build?

The reason I ask is that I noticed the local paper last night reporting that a takeover of Coventry City could be close, and that the deal would be around £30 million. This included buying the club and the Ricoh Arena.

Now, obviously the Ricoh is quite a bit smaller than the new Anfield (even without the expected expansion), but it is only a couple of years old and also includes a very large casino (one of the largest in Europe I believe) as well as a 71 room hotel, conference and exhibition facilities and a health club as well as the 32,000 seat football stadium itself.

So how much of the reported £400 odd million of the cost of the new stadium will actually be for the bricks, steel and grass of the new stadium and how much will be for the costs of redeveloping the current Anfield, building new railway stations etc?

£399 million for Project Management and Consultancy
£1 Million for everything else........ :D

Seriously though, no idea but i'd be interested to know just how much is taken up by Consultants, know someone who works for a consultancy firm and they charge a small fortune for even the smallest jobs so who knows how much they'd charge for a project as big as our new ground.

Dont know, but I will say you're looking at chalk and cheese. Ours is 2.5 times the size of theirs (looking at capacity) and will no doubt be finished to a higher standard. Plus by the time ours is ready, you are looking at stadia built 6 years apart.

You might as well compare the new Wembley with the Galpharm Stadium,
Roy. Shut up. Just shut up.

Once built, a stadium is worth only as much as the profits whoever owns it is making.

So if the aforementioned hotel/conferencing/casino are making losses and the club are as well, then the business, including the stadium will be worth jack schitt ;D

Coventry are also almost £40m in debt, so probably talking actual cost of £70m.

Do the football club actually own all of that though?

No it belongs to the owners of the club I believe, but the Ricoh arena and the football club are both part of the deal according to the local paper - hence the question.

Coventry are also almost £40m in debt, so probably talking actual cost of £70m.

True, but that's still far less than just a stadium for us (and yes, before anyone points it out again, our stadium will be bigger - it's not that much bigger though!).

No, I'm just wondering why our costs are so high compared to what the owners of the Ricoh want for it. That's why I was wondering if the quoted figures of £400m or whatever include things like the redevelopment of Anfield, building train stations etc.

Obviously ours will be more expensive because it's bigger, I was just wondering why it was so much more expensive.

Well, there are many many things that will make it more expensive, mate. For a start it's built 1/4 underground (a big deal), has loads of luxury rooms around it, underground car parks, the materials it's built from are way way more expensive too, plus it's fucking massive - it's as tall as the new wembley. The glass (will have to be a special type of glass), the huge amount of steel and the kop area. The ricoh is made from what looks like panelling where ours looks to be massive amounts of expensive materials.

Ours will have a shite load of facilities, too. Just check all the suite's, changing area's (and facilities for both teams), lounges, sports center, owners apartments.

This thing is going to be huge.

Probably more reasons, but those are a few. I think I'm right in saying that the 400m includes the renovation of the area, too.

To put it into perspective, the new wembley cost 850-900m and arsenal, which is almost exactly the same as estadio de luz, cost 300m.

Alan_F will know more about it that I do, but I think the single tier of the kop is going to be more expensive than just having an arsenal style 3/4 tier design.
