SPOTY 2015
« on: November 30, 2015, 10:32:01 pm »
The nominees this year are;

Chris Froome

Cyclist; Won the Tour de France for a second time

Jessica Ennis Hill

Heptathlete; Won her second World title 13 months after giving birth

Lewis Hamilton

Formula 1 driver; Won his third World Championship, and passed Ayrton Senna's number of race wins (41)

Lucy Bronze

Footballer; Starred for England as they finished 3rd at Women's World Cup. Was one of 8 players nominated for the Golden Ball at the tournament

Mo Farah

Long distance runner; Became the first man to pull of a 'triple double'- winning 2 golds at 2 World Championships and an Olympics. Has won his last 7 global tracks events in a row

Tyson Fury

Boxer; Went into Klitschko's backyard and inflicted his first defeat for 11 years. Became Britain's first heavyweight World Champion for 6 years

Lizzie Armitstead

Cyclist; Became Women's World Road Race champion, also claimed the British title 11 days after a crash that hospitalised her

Kevin Sinfield

Rugby Player; Ended his near 2 decade long career with Leeds Rhinos by winning the treble. Has since switched codes to play for Yorkshire Carnegie

Max Whitlock

Gymnast; Became the first man to win a gold for GB at the Gymnastics World Championships, also won a silver in the team event

Adam Peaty

Swimmer; Won 3 gold medals at the World Swimming Championships. His gold in the 50m breaststroke meant Peaty was the first man to complete the 50 and 100m double

Greg Rutherford

Long jumper; Won gold in Beijing to mean he's now won gold at every major Championships. Became only the 5th Britain to hold the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles simultaneously

Andy Murray

Tennis player; Was at the centre of Britain winning the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years. Won all 11 of his matches and had a hand in all but one of the points GB won en route to the trophy.

Odds; Murray 6/5, Ennis Hill 13/8, Fury 8/1, Hamilton 18/1, Sinfield 28/1, Froome 50/1, Farah 100/1, Rutherford 200/1, Peaty 200/1, Armitstead 200/1, Whitlock 250/1, Bronze 250/1

Would assume it's between Murray and Hamilton. Personally I think Murray deserves it more but either would be worthy winners really

I'm also quite surprised no cricketers have made the list considering we regained the Ashes, Broad or Root deserve to be in there

May as well do the Giggs  style vote and go for Sinfield for his career and treble finish.

Anyone but Hamilton.

Murray. Although Dave from the cycling thread will single handedly ensure  Froome wins. Did No Farah win a couple of World Championship Golds? Sorry Mo, needs to be an Olympics to have a chance, you set the bar too high!

Aye, Dave will be voting Froome (Ribena king); Mo Farah and if he could he would vote Paula Radcliffe. Russia/Sky as teams of year.

I think with the allegations that have surrounded athletics recently Ennis Hill or Farah don't stand much of a chance this year. Ridiculous that Root or Broad haven't made the shortlist in my opinion.

Seems to be a shit list this year. Murray walks it for me. The Kevin Sinfield selection is laughable, might as well call him Giggs 2.0.

Has to be Andy Murray. Would say Adam Peaty was in with a shout as well but unfortunately nobody really gives a shit about swimming.

I guess it'd have to be an Olympics or a big event that has decent media coverage for people to be aware of his success this year.

The fact that Tyson Fury has been nominated is scandalous. This is a man who compared homosexuality and abortions to paedophilia.

How so ?

Most of them are world champions / gold medalists in their respective sports

The most impressive for me is Froome. Everyone targetted the TDF this year and he comfortably beat them all.

Murray will probably win, but the shine is somewhat taken off by the Davis Cup being something nobody really cares about anymore. He didn't win any slams.

Gymnast and Swimmer. I probably couldn't pick them out of an ID parade but I know they're both very good at what they do! Think they both won world titles but sadly for them it's sports that most only take notice of in an Olympic year.

I don't think Murray deserves it this year, the Davis Cup team do and he is part of that, on his own though, I don't think so.

Being fair, its Fury and Hamilton.

Hamilton has won a 3rd title and Fury in spite of being a lumbering thicko and against the odds is world heavy weight champion. In their respective sports they have both done it, they are the number one.

Unfortunately they are both in their own way, utter dickheads, but still dickheads who had the best year in their sport. Which is what its about, not their personality, just how well they did in their sport.

Let the annual argument commence!
EVERY FUCKING YEAR!! Drives me spare. It should be a banning offence.

Seriously, how fucking dense do you have to be to not understand, its not for having a personality and doing some kind of sport. Its for being the best sports person, the one the public think have made the best sporting achievement of the year in their particular sport.

Not can they tell jokes, sing fucking songs or how good they are in interviews!! Its nothing to do with them as a person, their personality, their personal views on any subject or their politics. Just what they achieved.

I cant wait to see how many times it gets said this year "no personality"

Twats....you know who you are. ;D

Should have just had Armistead-this years TDF as with most others was a parade from the first week on and was the weakest race of the three GT's. Armistead's win at Richmond was as good a ride as Sagan's the following day.
