The right decision by Stevie but I'm pissed off. Pissed off because another great player retires from playing for England after enduring manager after manager who doesn't have a clue what to do with the players at his disposal. People are always going on about "oh look at Spain, look at Germany, why can't we produce players like that?". We've had Scholes, Gerrard and now probably Lampard, 3 of the finest midfielders you will see, wimper off the international stage without an England manager being able to get the best out of even one of them. I feel sorry for Stevie, and other members of our "Golden Generation", bow out with absolutely nothing to show for their England career.

Steady on now........

I go back to Germany 2010 with the goal hanging tub of lard constantly pressing forward and Stevie left to mop up, in fact hes had to do that for the majority of his England career, feel sorry for him but ultimately if you play in a team with players without half of your footballing brain, you're not going to win anything.

Every England captain since Bobby Moore has stepped down and looked back with nothing to show (except full kit wanker who can claim victimisation)

Fast forward 7 or 8 years with Fag ash Jack sitting behind a team England desk, packet of Regal and a half full ash tray lamenting on how he is sad he never won anything with England
Liverpool is the pool of life.

Right decision, just saw Tim Cahill, passing on his respect, nice touch I thought. Keep fresh to bring home number 6.

Getting a 12 month extension to his contract.

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/new-liverpool-fc-contract-steven-7503927

Think this will give him a bit of a confidence boost.  I feel like he has been doubting himself since the slip and has blamed himself for England's poor performance in this world cup so this could be exactly what he needs.

Great bit of business for liverpool f.c.

Still by far and away the best mf on our books.

Would have liked him to take brand Beckham's record for outfield caps, even if it meant a few meaningless cameos.

Ultimately the right decision mind.

Think of how many he would've got with all those games he missed due to injury like 2002 world cup etc.

In the end, it would be a bit crass to play on for a few more games when its obvious he won't last till the Euros. Now he is with us full time, we can rest him when need be and get the best out of him.

Hopefully he'll be lifting some silverware for us soon

'm convinced he'll be in excellent form this season without CL football. The fact that we have great depth at cm means we can use him properly - give him a weeks rest at all times and give him 30-35 starts.

Did Gerrard give The Sun an exclusive?
According to Sky here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI_vc1INRRk
Dodgy journalism or has the club changed its stance recently?
Not trying to cause trouble I know it's a sensitive issue, genuinely curious.

I'm not even gonna bother looking at the link. Gerrard would never even look their way after the shit they've written about our fans and ultimately his family
I’ve plenty links to the clubs playing and backroom staff as many on here know thank you very much. Fair enough, I admire your optimism. But you’re absolute ostriches if you think this squad, even with 2 or 3 new, “cut price” players with potential get us anywhere close

Yeah apologies. I think your right. Sky said the Author of the story was with Liverpool in NY. Easy to misunderstand after a long day.

Oh come on, it's Gerrard, he'd never give an interview to that rag.  They were probably in a room when he gave a briefing.

No offence but if you seriously for a millisecond believe that Stevie would give an interview to that lot then i'm not sure you really understand what has happened in the past with the club !

It's likely to have been from an all hands press conference

As I understand it, you can't bar accredited press officials from press conferences

Nor can you stop liars claiming that non-exclusives are exclusives

Twitter is currently buzzing with idiots - mainly United fans, it seems - saying Gerrard gave an exclusive interview with the Sun, and that he has insulted his cousin's memory

How thick do you have to be to believe that shit. If you're going to make up shit like that, best to link it with a foreign new signing who's just joined the club.

Come one now he made a mistake.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez admitted after the match that the manner of his side's victory had stunned him and he stated: "My problem is that I don't have words to express the things that I feel at this moment"

Wondering how long will this lad keep going as he must be feeling it a bit more these days after training and games? I guess he must be really encouraged to give it 110% again this season after getting so close and if we do as well again this season he will sign 12 month extensions. If we don't then ....

Thought it would be worth putting in here.

Was at the Princeton open training session last week and Stevie on three separate occasions came over to the fans to sign things and take photos. The third time was at the end of the session when all the players were around. He came back out after going in early since he'd played a game the previous day. He was probably third in line of players signing stuff and ended up being one of the very last to go in, all the other players passed him. Probably spent 30-35 minutes making sure everyone got a photo or an autograph. :wave

Thought he was fantastic on Sunday, played the role perfectly. Dropped in nicely to the split center halves and dictated our tempo - he went long/short when it was the right move.. Looked up to fitness as well especially in playing the full 90minutes, life in the old dog yet it seems.

When he has Henderson and Can/Coutinho ahead of him, he seems to trust them to do their job and keeps his position better, was playing almost as a 3rd center back most of the time.

Had it on meself. In my opinion he's the greatest player to ever put on the red shirt. I have a feeling that he will win the title at Liverpool, but even if he doesn't, it takes nothing away from him.

Oh, well. He was honestly a bit poor today. Left plenty of space to their midfielders in the second half, to Ward-Prowse in particular. Too often Southampton players had the chance to turn and run at our defenders because there was too much space between the lines. Obviously it's just the start of the season and Stevie can't be in top physical condition, but he'll have to play better in the next couple of matches.

We need him on that central position splitting the defenders.   He barely got there all game as he was fighting with Lucas for space.  He had a very quiet game really.  No massive mistakes but no real contributions either.   Cracking free kick that Skrtel and Lovren almost got on the end of though.

Thought the same, but I think he's picking up where he left off at the very end of last season and at the World Cup.

i would be happy to see sometimes a Henderson-Can-Allen midfield

i think this year Rodgers should really consider to sub him. I remember some of my mates who are Juve fans, they were really pissed off because Del Piro was getting more games than he should have, and their general opinion was to save Del Piero for ChampionLeague games. I think thats how we should manage Gerrard

Gerrard on the pitch for 90min is doing us more harm than good, and also to him

It wasn't set up for his passing game at all so he struggled to have an influence, it was almost like Hodgson's midfield 2 which just stifled the whole thing. Made a few key interceptions at the end however so it wasn't to bad from the skipper.

I think Gerrard struggled due to the formation, whereas Johnson was still doing stupid shit like shooting miles over from 40 yards and running into people.

He put two shots over the bar from about 25 out with nobody on him. This is something you should do every time. Yeah he put them high, but it's anything but stupid.

I'm worried that if Gerrard doesn't put in a starter's performance that he essentially has a free pass. Should be interesting to see what Can will do out there.
