Getting On With It - Brendan Talks to RAWK
« on: September 7, 2012, 07:29:19 am »
Yesterday, Brendan Rodgers sat down with RAWK and a few other websites and was candid about wanting to "get to know us" a bit better, and us him. What was supposed to be a 20-minute meet and greet, turned into well over a full hour, during which the manager touched on recent events, and his thoughts about the difficult few months ahead, focusing particularly on the opportunities now available for our younger players.

***********
It's hardly been the Summer of Love for Liverpool Football Club so far. A first-game loss to West Brom was painful enough. The Europa League play-offs against Hearts, that we perhaps laboured over a little too long, and then a cruel sparring with Man City, where not a single person in the ground thought we should have come away with less than three points, all then led us up the Yellow Brick Road towards the Emerald Summer Transfer Window where, at closing time, we were left with, well, not much really. The window was slammed shut on our fingers, and we're still shaking our hands with the pain. Enough has been wept, shouted and written about what did, didn't, should and shouldn't have happened come 11pm on August 31st, so there seems little point adding to it. But the lack of an extra pair of ruby studs to add to the boot room, is doubtless going to have a significant impact on what happens on the pitch between now and January.

Talking at Melwood yesterday, Brendan Rodgers was unequivocal about his disapproval of a Summer transfer window that encroaches upon the start of a new season. In his view, nothing good can ever come of it. “I've always been an advocate of, when the season starts, the transfer window shuts”, he says. “For me, there's a moral issue to it. You've got players around the changing rooms, who don't want to be there. For clubs, it's not good in terms of getting their squad together.” But it's not only the players who get unsettled. “It's only after the whole thing shuts, that you can get a bit of peace, that you can get on with your work.” he says.

Few people blame Rodgers for the failure of the club to bring in any proven strikers to partner Luis Suarez, but John W Henry's open letter to fans, expressing his own “disappointment” at events, seems to have only temporarily soothed the minds of those who secretly believe that 'American is as American was...'. The manager himself refuses to criticise the owners, saying only that the summer “didn't go to plan”. But anyone who went to the Arsenal game last Sunday, can't fail to have noticed the growing mood of despondency that seems to have flooded into the stands since deadline day. The negativity in the crowd was palpable. I couldn't help but think it was a certain 'type' of crowd in attendance that day. It was eerie, disquieting, and more suited to a team facing relegation, than one just three games into the Premiership season. I did actually hear one 'fan' talking about us as contenders for the drop, as we walked out of the ground. I won't repeat what I shouted back to him.

So we didn't add to our squad? It's done (or, rather, it wasn't...), just move on. Not a whole lot has changed, which I guess is what the naysayers are moaning about, but it's pathetic to watch so many fairweather fans already polishing the guillotine, almost delighting in their own pessimism. Look at it this way, we didn't panic buy, either. The manager admits that player wages at the club are “absolutely astronomical”, and that the squad needed “surgery”. But not bringing in more strikers should now force the club to seriously assess what they do actually have. In short, it's time for the players to step up.

No-one's happy that we have to get through the next four months with a smaller squad than everyone else, but maybe this is the time for certain stars to start shining. Rodgers has always been a fan of nurturing young talent, and at Liverpool he knows he's got loads of it. While he acknowledges that it's hard for young players to break through at a Premiership Club (“where do they go at eighteen, when they can't get in the first team....? They have to go out on loan”), he's also vocal about how those same players can help themselves.

“Not only do they have to have the talent,” he says, “They have to have the attitude, because it's no good them saying 'I'll show you what I'm like, if I get 15 or 20 minutes on the pitch'. You need to show me what you're like every single day of your life.” And now, with his own cherry-picking options drastically reduced, there's never been a better time for the club's precocious youngsters to stand up and be counted. Raheem Sterling is already walking the walk, despite a few famous run-ins with his new boss. “He's responsible [now],” says Rodgers, “He's tactically getting better, and he's a real threat on the field. I'm trying to keep him out of the media, make sure he stays composed and focused, give him the opportunities.”

Those same opportunities could soon also apply to the likes of new boys Borini and Assaidi, and perennial starlet, Dani Pacheco. All a little older and wiser than Sterling, perhaps, but not when it comes to the Premiership, and it's the league where most Liverpool fans want to see us truly compete. Historically, we've always brought players through the ranks. It hasn't happened so much in recent years, but maybe now is the time to start again, even if the necessity has been forced upon us. “A young player will run through a barbed wire fence for you,” Rodgers goes on, “An older player will look for a hole in the fence.” He says it's about balance, a mix of wise heads and fresh legs, which is why losing Lucas again so soon after a lengthy lay-off, has been hard to stomach. “It was bitterly disappointing...because he's one of the disciples, I would say. So to lose someone with that respect within the group, is obviously difficult”.

But with an international break now interrupting the domestic schedule, are the team just drifting towards the next game, rudderless and deflated? Apparently not. “I can see we need some reflection time,” says Rodgers, “So I think, for us, the break has come at a good time.”

An intense and obviously driven man, Rodgers also seems quite spiritual, and obviously trusts his instincts, something every good Liverpool manager has to have in spades. He's also extremely charismatic, and says all the right things, at a time when most fans dearly want to hear them (“Liverpool Football Club has always been about the style...”, “I want to be as open as I can possibly be...” “I wanted to come to a world class club...” etc), but it doesn't mean he's being disingenuous. Those who know him well, have no doubts about his commitment to the club, and his ambitious plans for our future, but he's no teller of fairytales, either. “There's a lot of work to do, in terms of the squad,” he says, “And that's going to take a period of time. There's been a lot of learning taking place, over the course of the summer...and we've ended up with what we've got...but it now gives me a chance to look at some young players, who maybe have not been given the chance before.”

Brendan Rodgers is clearly determined to give the kids a chance, but would this have still been the case if he'd been able to go spending in the summer? We'll never know. But his pull-together attitude and desire to get the best from the squad he has available, doesn't just apply to the youngsters, it seems.  “We're in a position where we've got twenty five games, minimum, between now and January, so it's going to be a real stretch...but this is the reason why [the squad] are here. I've spoken to the players, and when they get their little niggles, their injuries, they've got to man-up, got to be harder, got to be stronger”.

January is obviously his next life buoy, in squad terms, but until then, Rodgers is resolute about making the most of what he has. There is no other option. “We're going to have to be creative...” might be the understatement of the season so far, but he seems confident that he's sailing a steady ship. At least now the toxic transfer window debacle is over, he can, in his own words, “get in the boat, set sail, then at least you know that everyone sitting next to you, isn't looking to jump off it.”

Enjoyed that. Read that one journo commented that Rodgers had never knowingly given them a misleading line or quote. I guess he comes across like that in person?

Well he definitely speaks from the heart and it's obvious he's not thinking about what he says before he says it, which you get with other, better 'trained' managers. That's not naivety, I don't think, perhaps just an inbuilt desire to be up front. It was very hard not to like him, I have to be honest.

He has passion for football and he really is the type of character that can nurture the many talented youngsters we have. I hope FSG give him some time to build a team and implement his ideas

I thought I recognised the voice yesterday... and great write up. There were one or two cynical comments on here about the whole thing yesterday, but I have no truck with that at all. Thought it was enlightening and encouraging... and a bit of a tonic... helped by the fact that Yesil scored twice some hours later! Ha.

It's no surprise to hear him bigging up the young players we have on our books.

He literally has no option but to look to them now given how badly handled the summer was. And Rodgers' hands arent completely clean on that either. It was he after all who let all and sundry know how desperate he was to move out Carroll. Excellent brinkmanship that. And it was him that allowed him and others to leave before replacements were found. He has carte blanche on transfers, after all. We can hopefully put that down to naievity.

Luckily though for Rodgers, and especially FSG, we do have genuine talent below the first team. There are players waiting for that opportunity who are as close as they'll be to being ready.

More through luck than judgement, it might actually be a goer. And *some* good may come of our hapless summer.

He has to give the young players the chance as he's really no other option. They clearly have to be players he rates though as he was prepared to let Pacheco go out on loan again so clearly doesn't rate him.

I believe Rodgers will do well given time but any hopes of CL qualification that the owners had this year went up in smoke with the transfer window closing.  I personally was expecting another 7th-8th place finish again this year while the club strengthens and it's likely going to be like that again.

Our squad isn't strong enough and we've made changes to our first team that may possibly have weakened it (it's too early to tell).
It's the first time i can remember in ages that we've submitted our 25 premier league players and we've had to flesh it out by having four goalkeepers named in it. I didn't even know Doni was still at the club?

Personally i think the summer window was pretty shocking. I'm no business man but i know if i'm running a club i sign the player i want before letting the one i don't go. Fans these days don't have patience and I have to admit seeing the same mistakes being made as last year is pretty sad. Getting ahead and then giving away a stupid goal to drop points.

Would be a good idea to post his latest interview here as well. One of the best interviews I've ever seen. He's the right man.

Latest interview from where, mate? The Raheem one on the official site?

*******

"Brendan Rodgers insists both Liverpool and England must be careful not to over burden teenage winger Raheem Sterling.

The 17-year-old has found himself in the spotlight since making his full debut against Hearts in August, with impressive performances against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City earning him plaudits.

Even so, Sterling was not selected for England U21 duty this week, and will instead compete with the U19s alongside Adam Morgan.

Rodgers has spoken to the Football Association's director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking, about the youngster and feels the decision not to elevate him at this stage has merit.

"I think with young players you have to be careful," Rodgers told reporters.

"They can be elevated above their station too quickly. That is a part of it in this country. They have one good game and they get elevated into superstar status.

"You then see them at 23 and 24 and you wonder why they are not superstars any more. I spoke to Trevor Booking on the thoughts of where the FA believe he is at. I said, in my opinion, of course he has got the ability to be in the U21s.

"But I believe in many ways it is right for him to go with the U19s.

"It is all about individual needs. It might look great on the back pages that he is involved in the U21s but the reality is that this is a kid who has made great strides over the last few weeks.

"He was absolutely fantastic through pre-season. You have seen his quality, courage and attitude in the recent games - it has been fantastic. But for the moment let's just stay calm."

Argee with most of this but talk is cheap and Rodger talk has been that so far. Passion is great but means nothing if you can't do the job.

As for our youth - think some do over rate them. They're not as good as many think.

Step up from reserves to 1st team is massive.

I listened to the interview on TAW and was impressed not only with what he said, but with the way he said it. Brendan has a dream and you can tell that's what drives him every minute of every day.

As for the youth players, yeah they might not be good enough, if none of them are given the chance to step up, then none of them will succeed . Brendan said something about this in the interview, paraphrasing, all he wants is for them to give 100%, but then he added that that might not be good enough - so to me he realises that some might fail, but without testing them we'll never know.

The biggest problem I see that he has at the moment is a lack of support from some supporters, because they think they know the way we should be playing. Because of this he has to explain the system and tactics in interviews like this, which also makes his job harder because it helps the other teams.

I like what he says and the way he says it, I just hope he gets a fair crack at the whip.

the more i think about it, the more i believe that botched up transfer window could be a blessing in disguise for us. We may have won more games with a new striker onboard, however now the kids get a chance to prove themselves and get experience in abundance. we know we have a talented crop on our hands. we know now that we wont waste them.

ta for the write up Sarah. it was really well written. i really enjoyed reading it.

Brendan is not the problem, nor is he cause to be pessimistic. So although its great to see him speak to the fan based sites and such, and for him to speak well, he can only achieve so much of his grand ideas whilst the men above him continually make a pigs ear of things.

We could have Shanks back and still struggle. I still cant get my head around last week. None of it makes any sense.

Try to ignore him, he is clueless these days as the summer hasn't really gone well for him.

BR is a brilliant man and a manager, Needs 100% support. Love His passion and His Tactical Genius, also his creativity.

Tactical genius? Lets wait and see eh? He talks a good game mind and no doubt hes highly intelligent. If he gets us to 10 or above before January i'll share that sentiment.

They clearly have to be players he rates though as he was prepared to let Pacheco go out on loan again so clearly doesn't rate him.

He said a few very complimentary things about Pacheco yesterday, so I'm not sure about the ins and outs on where he stood as regards the nearly-loan deal. If he thought we were getting other strikers in, then it would have made sense to let the lad go out and get experience elsewhere. As it is, we kept him here, and a good job we did, maybe? I don't know the exact date timeline, though, so don't know if we kept Dani because of the transfer window disaster, or if the loan deal fell through regardless. Either way, I'm pretty sure BR does rate the lad highly.

Listen, lots of managers have done well with lower clubs in their first season. Coppell did it, Phil Brown did it, Laudrups doing it so far. lets see what he does here with the pressure that comes with it.

Im not dissing him im just saying lets not start bigging him up before hes had the chance and backing to walk the walk.

To the person asking about the interview he gave yesterday - it is available on YouTube, search for Brendan Rodgers interview 1. There is also a part 2 available too.

I don't want to post a link as there may be some copywrite issues.

The problem is that we should already be in a position to know if some of the youngsters are good enough. Tail end of last season with nothing to play for we should have seen more youngsters to assess if they were ready to make the step up. Brendan now has to contend with that problem in a brand new season under severe pressure. Sterling has shown what he can do and Shelvey - both these players were given a slight chance last season but many more weren't and now we're looking for loans for them.......

Enjoyed the read and the audio file on TAW. BR really speaks well and is believable on all levels.

My worry for him is that if we lose our next two then the media pressure will be massive which will transmit to the fans. We have already seen the "worst start since 1962" quotes without any reference to the quality of the opposition.  It's a concern and I hope it doesn't happen.

I don't think he can shrug off the transfer debacle totally. To my mind we should have had our deals done earlier and that would have flushed out the problems with the Dempsey option. At the end of the day it's BR that suffers most so he should pay the most attention and drive the deals.

However, it's a learning curve for him and he is intelligent enough to learn. The man needs time. I just hope he gets it.

Talking is great but its results and actions that are the important things. So far there has been alot of talking form the owners, manager and players (gerrard) but no results both on and off the pitch.

We’ll still finish in top four - and they won’t. You can quote me on this in May.

He has passion for football and he really is the type of character that can nurture the many talented youngsters we have. I hope the fans give him some time to build a team and implement his ideas

Fixed it for you  ;)

Thanks for posting this! He does seem to be brutally honest and realistic, something I think the club needs from the manager.

We could have Shanks back and still struggle.

And you'd be on here moaning about him. Brendan has every right to say the things he's said and try and spread the optimism that he clearly holds for the future.

“A lot of football success is in the mind. You must believe that you are the best and then make sure that you are. In my time at Liverpool we always said we had the best two teams in Merseyside, Liverpool and Liverpool reserves.”

If you'd been around when Shanks said that you'd have been writing letters to the Echo in green ink, pointing out the deficiencies in the reserve team squad. ;)

What are people's opinion on this?

I personally am very Impressed. His very keen to focus on the future or going forward and very keen to "Play teams off the park".

I personally had a laugh at the raheem sterling mention

Reading that, it comes across as he thinks we are very light squad-wise, so why wasn't that addressed better as a whole? I get the impression the only mistake the club believe they made is over the Dempsey transfer though.

Something doesn't quite add up, I smell something fishy and I'm not talking about the contents of Baldrick's apple crumble.

Fills me with every confidence that FSG have picked the right manager for Liverpool.
Looking forward to seeing what he does between now and January with the senior players and the younger players.
LFC have a very bright future ahead with Brendan Rodgers managing the team.

First of all thank you very much Sarah for your time and effort.

In Texas Hold 'em terms, I think Brendan Rodgers is sat with a "busted flush" he was praying for a heart "on the river"
Henry is all out of chips and we are only left with the memory of holding a "Royal Flush" in a previous hand.

I'm sick of piss and wind, and smoke and mirrors.
I dont want to hear "if the right player becomes available we will find the funds" I want to hear we have £50 mil or whatever sum is available for January.
I dont want to hear, appologies for fuckin up in the transfer window, I want to hear we will be going into the next window fully prepared and fully armed with enough cash to get the right players.
I dont want to hear about, how great the potential of our youth is, I want to see them on the pitch so we can all make my own mind up. In my mind, If they are good enough, they are old enough.
God knows we have enough cup games this year being involved in all three to see our entire squad.
Rodgers already looks like Rafa to me. His hands are already tied behind his back and if he criticises the owners he will be putting his head in the noose just like Rafa did.

Have some faith I keep getting told by the fans I call mates.
I had faith in Rafa, I had faith in Kenny, I have faith in Rodgers, I'll even have faith in the next head for the chopping block. Until I can put my hand on my heart and declare my undying faith for a fuckin decent owner I am going to remain a sceptical old fogey.

Great write up, I've listened to the interview in full and the one thing I was most impressed with (Not counting the youth being given a chance and Lucas "The Disciple") was how simply he described the difference between 433 and 4231 - in 1 minute he educated even the most novice of fans on the key differences in 2 systems that on paper seem very similar.
