« on: August 4, 2016, 10:20:12 am »
Long story short.

Coming back on boxing day for the Stoke game (mate is over from Australia) but people in work are saying trains wont be running between Manchester and Liverpool on boxing day.

Anyone experience of previous years travel on boxing day?

Nearly got caught out with this a good few years back when I flew into Birmingham from Dublin because the flights to Liverpool/Manchester were too expensive. Just expected trains to be running as normal but there were none.

Also a very limited National Express service as I recall.

Wouldn't have made the game at all but for the Spare Lifts thread on this site and the generosity of unclebob!

Alright mate,

There's a coach from Oldham leaving at 09:50, changing at Manchester and arriving in Liverpool at 12:15, for about £8. For the return, there's a coach that leaves at 19:50 and gets in for 22:15 back to Oldham, also about 8 quid.

Might be worth a shot? Unless you can blag a lift!

Hi all,

We will be over from Australia (my first trip above the equator) and are coming to the Boxing Day game. My GF's family is in Chelmsford so we are having christmas there. We were going to train it but it's probably too difficult. Was thinking about hiring a car? What do you think?

Cheers.

Getting around on public transport at that time of year is definitely problematic, even more so when you have to go between towns or cities.

A car would deffo be the best option.

Be advised though, as Christmas falls on the Sunday, the bank holidays are all pushed back a day, so Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday 27th are all holidays, and the hire car places are probably going to be closed, so you may have to hire a  car from the Saturday to the Wednesday.

If you're very lucky, the particular car hire place you choose, may be open on the Tuesday 27th. But it's doubtful.

Check it out first.

Failing that, put the feelers out on here, to see if anyone is travelling to that game from your area, who you can cadge a lift with.

As mentioned no trains on Boxing Day & has been the case for years, limited National Express coach service, one from London but think that doesn't arrive in Liverpool until 2.30-3pm so be hard pushed to make the 3pm kick off.

Looked at the fixtures, with no fixtures until the Saturday 31st December, & Tuesday 27th December being a bank holiday the Stoke game could be moved to that date, i'm sure games have been moved from 26th December to 27th before.

Car hire seems best. You could try Essex Reds on the lfc site but not sure how full they are or where they leave from

Cheers for the replies everyone. Do you really think it's a chance they could move it? We have our Liverpool accom booked from the 26th to the 29th so if they moved it that would be ok but we almost booked the Isla Gladstone hospitality tickets last night (the cheapest hospitality tickets at 174 pounds  :(). Logged on today to buy the tickets and they have now removed the IG option. Looks like it's just not available. Should have bought them last night. Bugger.

I wouldn't be worrying about hospitality

I'm sure you'll get 2 off RAWK exchange with it being that close to Christmas

You reckon the odds on that would be good. Would hate to get all the way there and then not score some tickets. Gutted. :-[

I've just booked a hire car one way from Hertfordshire - drop off at Speke Airport as I'm staying over and flying up to Edinburgh on the 27th.

Pick up 24th as no local offices open early enough on Boxing Day. £135 but that includes £40 for the one way drop off.

Seemed like the best option after fairly extensive searching:

No trains London - Liverpool on Boxing Day
No direct flights London - Liverpool on Boxing Day. There were cheap flights from other places so worth checking.
National Express coach leaves about 8.00am and arrives at Liverpool One just after 14.00 so would be ok to go straight to the match if it's on time. Didn't check coaches home. Also there were no trains into London so no good for me anyway.
Megabus - no options showing.
Didn't try local supporters coaches as I'll have luggage and need to check into the hotel.

Happy to offer a lift if anyone's stuck travelling from Welwyn/Hatfield/Stevenage area but it's only one way and I'll be leaving very early.

Isn't the 27th classed as a bank holiday as Christmas falls on a weekend?

Yes it is.
Quote from: Harvest Fields
i watched the chelsea game at my sisters. her 12 year old son is severly autistic and i forgot myself and jumped up screaming at the goal and he went nuts. screaming and shouting. scared the fuck out of me. apologised to my sister as i thought id upset him, turns out he was joining in.

It is yeah. Most transport will be on Sunday service so people will be able to make it. I wouldn't be surprised if there were still quite a few returns from people having to work but maybe not as many as there would have been had the match been on the 26th. I guess the best source of extra tickets will be if Stoke return some of their allocation.

Would love to get in late availability for this, but I can't tell whether or not there will be many spares going.

I didn't book it due to trains not running on Boxing Day.

Bound to be spares knocking around for this right? I've been tasked with getting several family members tickets as Christmas presents because my mum seems to think it's still pay on the gate... ???

I will try and put them up early cos of xmas post, but depends on the LA sale and how quickly they a) put it up and b) that it sells.

The sales seem to have flew over for games lately so imagine they'll be gone in less than 2 mins.

The post is normally fine for two weeks from now, so like, no need to really do that one early - everyone sending cards and stuff should be using recorded or special delivery anyway.

I was thinking more like Stoke/City/Sunderland ;D
