He looks incredibly raw but talented in the match compilations of his from the Serbian league that I've seen so far. Next season might be too early for him to make an impact but he is definitely one to watch out for in the future given the fans show enough patience.

Have we not got a Red Star fan on here yet who can give us a serious review of young Marko?  ;D

Usually always the case when we sign a new player from a club that let's face it, most of us will have watched maybe once or twice in our life times.

Possibly, but they've already got the league in the bag and they're not in Europe, so what's the big deal? Either we want the player or not and paying an extra few quid to have him available for the 5 million games between now and the end of the season - and giving him time to adjust - may prove worthwhile.

It's like last year paying big money for Origi and then letting him stay at Lille for a year rather than letting our player get to grips with English fooball.

Plays a full season in a title winning team, bags of confidence, hits ground running with us for pre season. Maybe the player himself insisted on being allowed back?

Welcome to the best club in the world. I've got a good feeling about this one :)
"I always say the same thing. What is the difference between 4-3-3 and 4-5-1? Only whether you play the wingers deep or high. Then if you press the other team they will play deep, 4-5-1. And if you cannot press them because they are stronger than you, they'll play 4-3-3. People talk about systems, but maybe they don't know a lot about systems.

Potential for a Can & Grujic centre midfield partnership in future? Or are they too similar?

Genuine question, I have no idea how the latter plays.

There was a nice write up of Grujic in TIA forum by Redstar Belgrade fan

Quote from: CrvenaZvezda, post: 540745, member: 30575
Greetings from Serbia!

First of all, sorry for (maybe) bad English and sorry if I am writting on wrong thread.

Liverpool is a very popular club in Serbia, there are too many people who are fans of your club. We love history of Liverpool and fans who are very good. I am fan of Red Star Belgrade (Crvena Zvezda Beograd) and I am here to write something about Marko Grujic.

My club Red Star is very big club, the biggest in Serbia. Red Star was champion of Europe in 1991. You heard for Nemanja Vidic and Dejan Stankovic, this two players were playing for Red Star. Last 10 years our club is in very poor financial situation and results were bad, but we (fans) never give up. This season Red Star is playing great football and she is on first position in league (20+ point adventage over team on second position). Marko Grujic is one of the most deserving guys for this success. After many years, one player of Red Star deserved chanting from fans, that was Marko Grujic.

Before I wrote something about his abillites and style of playing, I want to say that he is great guy. Usually, young talented players from Serbia are uppish(I am not sure for this word, but negative word). Marko is not one of them, he is very good guy who work very hard and do not pay attention on things out of pitch.

Marko is physically very dominant player. Tall and powerful, like Paul Pogba. We love to say that Pogba is France version of Grujic. He can play on DM, CM, AM. But, I think that his best position is CM/AM. Beacuse, if you put him on DM he will need to do defensive task first, and that is mistake because he has great attacking abillities. Thought he is very tall, he is fast, beacuse have long steps. Marko have great technique. He can dribble the opponent and it's very difficituly to take ball from him. Marko have precise pass, specially long (sometimes he send pass with outer part of foot, I hope you understand what I want to say). I said that he is powerfull and strong, yes, he have strong shoot, very strong shoot. So, he can threaten opponent goalkeeper whit long distance shoot or going on cross from playmate. His best charachteristic is next: he took ball from opponent, than lead the ball about 40-50 meters (if someone attack him he dribble him) and than give precise pass and create chance tor teammates. Marko Grujic is one of the biggest talents in Serbia in last few years, and definitely best player in Serbian Super League. I hope that you will have patience for this guy, because he is combination of talent and physically dominant body. That combination is rarely in world football.

Nah, I think Vieira was the French Grujic :p

Btw, does someone know why Grujic wasn't a regular starter for Serbia's u20 team when they won the World Cup (he was mainly a sub, ie. 4 sub appearances and 1 start iirc)? Surely if he was as good as Serbians are saying (ie. "best Red Star talent since Stankovic...") then he should have been an automatic starter there - even though they team had several good midfielders (eg. Nemanja Maksimovc, now at Astana).

I know that Sasa Zdjelar was the main def.mid. 20yo, plays for Olympiakos in Greece. He barely features though, plays mostly cup games, like today. I find it hard to believe he is better than Grujic.

I watched Serbia's group games and their first knock-out match in my city for the U20 World Cup. My suspicion is that Serbia went for specialist midfielders - Zdelar, the captain as a no. 6, with Maksimovic ahead of him as a no. 8 and then Milinkovic, the most talented of the three playing at no. 10. I wonder if Grujic is a bit more box-to-box, and was considered to not be as good as the specialist roles? Or it may be that he's developed later than the others - he could even be a year or two younger for all I know. Or perhaps the coach had used the other three in qualifying and didn't want to change a wining team. Grujic's only start was when Milinkovic was suspended.

Another possibility is that Grujic has improved a lot in the last few months, and we've woken up to that ahead of other teams. We need a Serbian specialist to answer this properly!

Thanks for the replies guys, some smart suggestions!

It appears that Grujic was a year younger than the other starters. As such it's most likely that he wasn't as big a part of their qualifiers as the others even though he's emerged as the best CM talent of the group.
