Any one got any of the old shops in Old Swan where the new Tesco is. Tesco hasn't been there that long but those shops are a distant memory.
Not too sure if this is the view, St Oswald-Prescott Rd.

or maybe it's this angle...(I'm not sure it's the same view as the one above as the house details on the left, windows etc,  look different)

If you do a google on St Oswald Street and Old Swan and look in the images these pop up from myliverpool forum but I think you have to register to view them all.

Edit. It's strange, I've just recalled I was talking to my Mum just the other week and she mentioned that she would wheel me in the pram to Old Swan every few weeks when I was tiny in the late '50s to go to a shop there though she couldn't remember which one, and I do have vague recollections of going there back then. Since we lived towards the far end of Melwood Drive, that's some distance. Can't see any young mum with a buggy doing that these days, but there again, my Mum was 89 the other month so it must have done her some good.

Excellent find. Some really interesting pictures in there.

364 & 365 are fascinating in they show the brick air raid shelters built on the roads during the war. Heard about them years ago from my parents and old relatives but never seen pictures of them before, only the back garden Andersons. Must have been terrifying.

You sure it's St.Oswald street?

It looks more like the bottom end of Mill Lane, West Derby Village to me.

Yes, you're right. here

I didn't bother verifying it but just took it as what that site I lifted it from said it was of.

I could kick myself, of all places I should have remembered it should have been West Derby village though I remember it more when the road was still cobbled and the tram lines where still in place at the fountain.

Small world.

One of the Priests in the photo of St Oswalds was a distant relative of mine.

Since I shared his Christian name, I was left a gold Waltham hunter pocket watch presented from St Oswalds Gym in '37 and a large and hefty silver cigarette box engraved for his Silver Jubilee in '46. I've still got them, not too sure why as I only remember being taken to see him on his deathbed back in the mid 60's. I expect my kids will be totally baffled by them when I pop my clogs.

The Overhead Railway closed in 1956, so I'd guess that pic was taken shortly before.

Ta mate.

Whenever I see photo's like this I tend to think of the people in them rather than the actual surroundings. The 5 people in this look like they have just finished work for the day and are on their way home, looks like a nice late spring/ summer's day. The girl nearest the road looks hot!

No help here really - but on the same track - there's some footage of the Overhead in this 1950 film. From about 9.40 onwards;

Great bit of film that Tsar. Don't remember ever seeing (or perhaps noticing) it before.
I've been trying to figure out where it might be, in particular the shot at the end when the bad guy falls off the roof in front of the Dock Railway.
I'm assuming it's somewhere on Regent Road, I can just make out the sign on the low building the far side of the road as I think 'J KIRKALDY&SON Ltd' and there appears to be a railway goods shed with covered platforms lines the far side and in the distance.
Those shots from China Town over the bombed out areas and over towards the Anglican Cathedral also looked atmospheric and I noticed there was a brief shot early on in the clip of the Crown Street area with eeyeaddios photo flats and cobble stoned roadways from much earlier on the thread prominent.
Great stuff, thanks for posting.

I love those old street scene photo's, I normally look at the people first then check out the surroundings, gives me some context. I suppose the youngest person in that picture's got to be around 80 years old now, if they're still alive. Still, it's a very evocative picture of a lost time.

While I'm here......there's 1 or 2 in this link I haven't seen before

http://streetsofliverpool.co.uk/near-to-revolution/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=near-to-revolution

That armoured car is the same one as in the pic from earlier on in the thread here

It looks like it might be taken in the courtyard at Hatton Gardens, that arched tunnel in the background leading out to the street and visible in the other photo.

It's obviously a posed propaganda shot, possibly even touched up as I doubt it would have moved very far with all those coppers on board.

I'd love to know the story behind that particular photo.

there's a lot of coppers, and suits there.  It looks like the police briefing, or alternatively, a debriefing, before they all go thir seperate ways.

Look at all those coppers on the rigging at the back.

Edit: ah. Maybe the coppers are some of the Warwickshire force, drafted in?

Tsar, that looks like the canal in the background so maybe The Blue Anchor near Aintree?
I've never been in there but from streetview it looks like it backs onto the canal and would possibly be a quiet out of the way place at the time.

Brilliant photo, thanks for posting. Can't be the Blue Anchor, as there's no buildings behind it.

There can't bee too many pubs right on a canal in Liverpool (presuming it is Liverpool), with a built up industrial area the other side of the canal.

Taking the rout of the Leeds/Liverpool canal, it's more likely to be a pub in the Litherland-Bootle-Vauxhall area of Liverpool

I've got a book called Liverpool: Then and Now, showing comparing shots of city centre streets.  The interesting thing is as this book is now a good 15 - 20 years old, the 'Now' pictures have also dated.

Does anybody know where I can dig out pictures of Shaw Street, about 10 minutes from the Royal, on the cusp of Everton?  There's a series of model maps that feature the street in the new museum and I'd like to get some old pictures for a bit of context.
I don't always visit Lobster Pot.  But when I do. I sit.

I think this site is already in this thread, near the front somewhere.

http://inacityliving.piczo.com/?g=27070738&cr=7

The same photo's are in the series of 4 books - In a City Living.

There's also other books currently on sale - The Lost tribe of Everton.
http://www.losttribeofeverton.co.uk/everton-photographs.php

A lot of the above covers the Shaw st-Everton Brow-Netherfield Rd areas.  Plus the likes of Canterbury St.Salisbury St etc, which are just behind Shaw st, and is the area covered on the maps/diarama in the new museum.

Going from open fields, to sweeps of terraced streets, onto the 60s tennaments, and to the modern 90s-2000s houses that now occupy the same sites.
