I think I'm one of the few on here that can legitimately lay claim to having been on the Overhead, although unlike Vic, sadly I have no memory of it as I was just too young.

According to my Mum, my Dad took me on it just before it closed forever in '56.

I don't even think I was one at the time but he thought it might be important some day for me to have known I'd travelled on it.

I do clearly remember a lot more wreckage though after the closure. We used to go to the beach at Waterloo in the summer back in the late 50's and early 60's, seems daft now but it was a big day out for us from West Derby back then.

On a few occasions for some reason we drove back along the dock road into town before heading off back home to L12. I have pretty clear memories of seeing many of the supporting pillars for the OH still being in situ back then, looking like an opened ribcage down the road, though none of the decking was in place by then.  I guess it would be around '58 or so. The only reason I remember it so vividly is because as a little child I was fascinated by all aspects of engineering, ships, trains, trams, bridges, cranes, aircraft etc, and I was playing with meccano from almost when I could first talk, and so things like the OH remains were visually rather important to me.

I'm not sure now if they are good memories to have any more, that of the dismantling of so much of what made the Liverpool of my childhood, the OH, the docks, the busy railways everywhere, the hustle and bustle of a city with industries and seemingly with a purpose, so much now gone by the wreckers crane and ball.

I went to a garage in the Dingle last year by the old Mecca at the start of Park road. Had to drive down a ramp and it is the old station for the overhead.

Yeah it's still there.  Plenty of pictures of it kicking about online.

The Dingle....The only overhead railway in the world that went underground ....here

It's changed a bit since the last time I was there, sometime in the early 60's. My Dad took me to see a RN destroyer and a submarine right about where all those roads are now.

In the meantime, have a look at these, I don't think they've been posted before....

Originally built, and traded, as Kirklands bakery. Out front being the bakery shop.

Hence why it was a bar called 'Kirklands' in the 1980s and 90s, and hence why they've now gone with the name 'Fly in the Loaf'

Could well be Gulley.

Although the old style mosaic door entrances were very fashionable right through the Victorian era, into the Edwardian era. It's only when you get to about 1900-1920 that they fall out of fashion for the cleaner lines of the art deco period.

There again, there were still some being installed into the mid century. Although less and less.

THAT'S the interior I remember.  It was just so damned classy and it was all part of the magic of a trip to New Brighton for an 8 year old.  I remember the the little light fixtures fitted to the bulkhead behind the cabs.  Really elegant little fluted glass, like snowdrops.
Still have those in Serbia, was on one 2 years ago ;D

Not too sure why but the rest of that block looks mid to late Victorian to me, I can't imagine it's too much earlier.
But that end property that Craven's are in looks like it replaced one of them which would make it later.
See here... the edge blocks on the walls between the buildings there seem to match up but Craven's is a totally different style.
It seems to be older, that large doorway and those windows, at first glance Georgian or very early Victorian to me (but I'm no expert) but perhaps it's Edwardian but done in some kind of pastiche.
This looks like it might have been another door once.
Honestly don't know.

The reason I'm curious is tied in with your answer. That 187 is the same as it is now, but in earlier times it was shown as 219, with the Peacock Inn at 223 (in today's numbering the Peacock would be c191).
Just that it got me wondering how they dealt with the numbering system when all these buildings started getting put up butted up to each other , rather than spaced out.

A slight update.

Taken from the Freddie O'Connor books - A pub On Every Corner -  out of print since the late 1990s.

No mention of the High Park, but has this on the Peacock Inn.

Peacock Inn

Probably the earliest inn of three that were all close to the summit of Park Road. This sketch dates from 1820(*) when it would have been part of a small hamlet in the countryside to the East of the road. Situated a little South of the present High Park PH near High Park Street, High Park was the highest point of Toxteth Park and the Peacock Inn was probably a former lodge of the park, apparently built c1635. The premises were also known as the High Park Coffee House but had been demolished by the 1870's as was the High Park Tavern, situated facing the Peacock between what would become Wellington Road and Greil Street, both cleared to make way for the ever increasing spread of terraced streets. The Brookfield family ran the Peacock from the 1820's to the 1870's.

(*)Small sketch, but I can't be arse scanning it at this time of night.
If you want it tomorrow, let me know.

Just found this ...

This notice appeared in the Liverpool Mercury January 7th 1867:

"To be Let, in consequence of a death in the family, a first-class Free Wine and Spirit Vaults, with Eleven-barrel length brewery attached. Both vaults and brewery are in full working order. For cards to view and further particulars apply to Mr. James Ellis, High Park Inn, 219, Park Road"

The present building dates from 1902-3 following the widening of this part of Park Road.

from here ...  http://www.flickr.com/photos/44435674@N00/3342094213/

So it had a brewery round the back. See the link to the side road named after the first owner, Mr Ellis

While browing for Park Road stuff I came upon this fascinating little bit on urbex ..

Richie, yes if you would please I'd appreciate it.

Gulley, spot on. http://web.archive.org/web/20071107222338/http://www.toxteth.net/places/liverpool/pubs/high%20park%20inn.htm

As requested.

It's taken from the book, A pub on every corner, by Freddy O'Connor - Volume 2 - South Liverpool.

The books themselves come in 4 volumes, and have all been out of print since the late 1990s, but this year I've managed to be patient and pick up all 4 volumes off ebay at quite reasonable prices, from about £8 to £15.

They're a great reference material of the city's pubs over the last century or two.

Peacock Inn

Probably the earliest inn of three that were all close to the summit of Park Road. What part of Liverpool is originally from, himself?

I bought - The Lost Tribes Of Everton -  for my arl fella, last year, which is a good book.
He's from Speke originally but lived in Toxteth and Aigburth as a child. Just found out that my Grandad was born in the workhouse where Paddy's wig-wam is now. Bad times.

Ta Richie. Seems like it stayed pretty much the same.

Far as I can figure, a Robert Brookfield was the licencee up until he died in 1870.
The same fella was in court in 1864, involving stolen cigars and his brief mentions that the Brookfield's had had the Peacock for 'nigh on 100 years', so quite a way before 1820

Dunno if it's been posted before but was just reading up on the Liverpool Blitz on Wiki and saw this image:

I don't always visit Lobster Pot.  But when I do. I sit.

Yep. I've always been in awe of that image.

The sheer desolation of the city is in such stark contrast of what we have now.

If you took away the Victoria Monument, no one would ever recognise it as Liverpool.

Ha Ha Ha Gulley. Ya beat me to it.

I've just spent a good 90 minutes perusing that site, reading about the bombings of various air raid shelters etc.   It's well worth spending a bit of time looking around the site, as it gives loads of local history stuff on there.

Anyway. Back to the photo's.

All to be found on these three pages.
