83' - Omg!  Saved by the crossbar and Lovren as Lucas runs out of steam trying to chase someone down.

Cross was whipped across but Southampton couldn't finish.

Very nervous moments for Liverpool.

Decent delivery but  dealt with

87' - Coutinho tries to dribble past 3 but is robbed.  The counter attack is snuffed out by a high sweeping Karius

89' - Origi bundled over.  FK lofted high but easily dealt with.  We continue to push to no avail.

Lovren with a great tackle on the edge of the box.

The only positive is we only conceded 1

This will probably get drowned in doom and gloom, but -

IT IS ONLY HALF-TIME IN THE TIE
Away goals only count if the second leg goes to extra time
THERE IS ANOTHER GAME TO GO YET
The second leg is at Anfield
YES, THAT IS ANOTHER NINETY MINUTES FOR US TO WIN THIS
We could easily have lost by a much bigger score tonight, but they will feel deflated at only scoring one
WE HAVE A HISTORY OF OVERTURNING DEFEATS IN THE FIRST LEG WHEN THE SECOND IS AT HOME

Desperately poor performance, never looked like scoring all game and the usual defensive calamity to hand Southampton the advantage. Absolute shite. Fortunately we're still in the tie because the result could easily have been so much worse.

That said that's probably the first time you could say we've been outplayed all season which given we're six months in isn't bad going.

No pace, no fun.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Think that's the worse we've performed all season. Could easily have lost 3/4-0. Bit worried ahead of the United game now, we haven't really played that well for a while

Not the end of the world. Only one mistake separating the sides in the end. I'm confident we will do better at Anfield. Some thoughts:

Can has been average or below for a long time now.
Lallana and Karius very good.
It's great to have Coutinho back

Southampton boss will be frustrated....

They've let us off the hook.

We need to capitalise on it...

Well played Southampton btw.  They nullified us upfront very effectively and we're really sharp on the break

Delighted to get out of that with a 1-0, such was the standard of our performance. Worst we've played since Watford away I think. Salvagable, thankfully. Looked broken in every part of the pitch except keeper, Karius was very good.

Frustrating. Was hoping we'd seen the last of our Jekyll and Hyde days, but we seem to be in a proper rut at the moment. Can't turn up like that again second leg and expect a response Sunday.

Positives are at least it was only 1 and I fancy us to turn it round at home. Karius kept us in the tie first half so kudos to him for knuckling down after being dropped. Glad Phil is back. Hopefully Hendo and Matip are fit for the weekend and we can get Firmino central, Lallana back at #8.

Chin up lads and move on

Awful performance - good result for us considering they could have 2 or 3 at least.

Karius made some good saves which will give him some confidence.

Only positive is that it is half-time and we have them at Anfield for the "second half" which will be rocking !!

1-0 is a good result considering we should have lost by four or five.

A threadbare squad and our back up's aren't good enough, plus half the team seems bereft of form. Sign some players FFS.

We didn't get what we deserved from the game. We set them up on three or four perfect counter attacks, they should have tapped in a couple and won at least 3-0. We are lucky they were so poor, so conservative and finished atrociously.

We dominated possession but we were very poor in the final 3rd. I actually think we will miss Mane more than we did Coutinho. It was telling the lack of pace in our side without him.Plus he's direct. I do hope we can freshen it up with a couple of faces this window (unlikely as it is) as we look a little tired.

I'm confident we'll still go through

Got out of jail there to be honest. Could be looking at a lot worse scoreline.

Too many players not performing against a poor Southampton.

Need to put things right at the weekend.

2017 hasn't been good to Liverpool

Our first team has played 2 games. 1 away in the league after playing Man City less than 48 hours prior. The 2nd at difficult ground against a good team.

Squads paper thin and we get too many injuries to get away with it.

Mental if we don't sign a winger and a centre half if both Sakho and Lucas leave, but these are just empty words because we all know we won't.

And thank goodness we are only one down after that performance. Good thing we still play at home then!

No doubt need to up our game for Utd!
