What do you think our chances are for this year Kellan?
I think from our point of view, our squad for this year is the best one we've ever had. The only negative is that it no longer contains Bronze. Any side who lost her services would struggle to replace what she brings, but I do see some of her attributes in Ryland and I'm sure that in time she will prove to be a good replacement. As for our other business I am more than happy to swap Frausing, Da Costa and Davison for Murray, Oshoala and Smorsgard. It's an upgrade in my eyes. Murray looks a far more accomplished defender than Frausing did and she is also pretty Bronze-esque in her play which is very welcome. Oshoala is more likely to provide the assists and goals which Da Costa didn't really have enough of. Smorsgard looks a better fit for us than Davison was.

Rolser is back from her knee injury (though she didn't even make the bench last night so I hope that isn't bad news) and her return will be a massive boost for us if she can replicate even half of what she did in 2013. Staniforth is also back from her knee injury. I think she only has three appearances in the year she has been here so it's very hard to know exactly what Beard signed her to do. But watching her last night you wouldn't have known she hasn't played properly for the best part of two years, and she is a nice option who we didn't have last season.

So on the whole I do think we are better off player-wise. We just need it to click and more importantly still we need to keep players fit this time. That is what nearly cost us last season. With that in mind - if I had one criticism it would be that it doesn't quite feel like we have added the numbers which would see us through should we happen to get decimated by injury again. Though perhaps that will be addressed in the mid-season window. A World Cup this summer reduces the amount of players who are willing to transfer between countries and I don't think Beard sees much value in the WSL. He might have more luck bagging a few imports for the second half of the year.

But of course we are only one side of the equation. There have been far too many changes across the board to know where the rest stand. Last year was wide open but I think this year is probably going to be even more competitive still. You just can't call anything anymore. At the minute there is probably two teams favourite to finish bottom. The other six could finish in pretty much any order at all. We will have wait until around the end of April for the picture to start revealing itself.

Early 30's across the board, but a few go on longer, and a number retire before 30 through either injury or financial reasons (they don't earn a whole lot of money).

Though Becky Easton blows that out the water.

There have been a few who go on longer, as I said. Most retire in their early 30's from full-time professional football. Michelle Akers was considered almost too old when she was still playing in 1999 in the Women's World Cup. That was at 33/34. As the game gets more money into it, and we get access to better rehab and fitness regimes, women footballers will play as long as their male counterparts. If we could figure out concussion prevention, though, that would probably put a few years on to most female professionals careers from that alone.

FA Cup 5th Round - Birmingham City 3 - 1 Liverpool - 22/03/15

There will be no Wembley dream for Liverpool Ladies this season after they lost 3-1 to Birmingham City in the Women's FA Cup fifth round on Sunday.

Natasha Dowie fired a consolation goal for Matt Beard's side, who will now look to bounce back as they begin their Women's Super League title defence against Sunderland on Wednesday night.

An away tie against Birmingham was always going to be tough for the Reds as the Blues ran them desperately close for the title last season.

Playing their first game of the campaign, Beard gave debuts to new recruits Line Smorsgard, Satara Murray and Asisat Oshoala.

The home side made a bright start and Jade Moore fired them in front, only for Dowie to level the match when she headed home following a perfect delivery from Corina Schroder.

Birmingham regained the lead when Jo Potter scored direct from a free-kick, and Liverpool then came close when Oshoala was close to a debut goal with a half-volley just wide of the target.

Liverpool tried to fight back but with five minutes to go the home team wrapped the game up when Remi Allen scored from the penalty spot.

Liverpool team: Libby Stout, Becky Easton (Ingrid Ryland), Satara Murray, Gemma Bonner, Corina Schroder, Fara Williams, Hannah Dale (Katie Zelem), Asisat Oshoala, Kate Longhurst, Line Smorsgard (Nicole Rolser), Natasha Dowie. - ladies.liverpoolfc.com

Match Preview - WSL - Liverpool vs Sunderland - 25/03/15 - KO 19:45

Liverpool welcome Sunderland to the Select Security Stadium in Widnes tonight (7:45pm kick off) as the Reds begin the defence of their WSL1 title against the newly promoted outfit.

Liverpool boss Matt Beard has told his players they cannot afford to dwell on their FA Women's Cup exit.

The reigning league champions begin their title defence against Sunderland on Wednesday, just three days after their 3-1 cup loss at Birmingham.

"We have got to show a united front, bounce back and start well on Wednesday," Beard told BBC Sport.

"We have got to show a little bit of belief within ourselves and make sure that we respond well."

Liverpool, who have won the title in both of the last two seasons, host last year's WSL 2 champions at the Select Security Stadium.

"We've played Sunderland over the last two years quite a few times, in the Continental Cup and the FA Cup, so we know a little bit about them," Beard added.

"They haven't made too many signings, so they're the same sort of team. I expect it to be a tough game.

"They'll be organised and they've got players who can score goals.

"I'm confident within this group that we can bounce back and start our league campaign, hopefully, with three points."

Liverpool defender Becky Easton expects this year's Women's Super League to be the most competitive yet thanks to a flurry of major signings by the big teams during the close season.

Easton expects the 2015 campaign to be extremely close given that teams have strengthened considerably, with Liverpool signing African Women's Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala, England defender Lucy Bronze quitting the Reds to join Manchester City and Sweden international goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl moving to Chelsea.

"This season will be the toughest and most competitive in the WSL," the 40-year-old right-back said.

"Teams have been strengthened by a lot of movement and transfers, with some good players from abroad coming over to play here this season. And it's a World Cup year, so those involved with England will be trying to raise their game and get noticed."

The Reds lost 3-1 to Birmingham on Sunday to crash out of the FA Women's Cup but Easton is confident her new-look side can bounce back in their opening league game against newly-promoted Sunderland on Wednesday.

"We've lost three or four players and signed four, so in many ways we're like a new team," she said.

"We're still getting to know each other and there's a lot to work on - but our pre-season friendlies have gone okay and we're starting to gel.

"We've won the league the last two years and we've found that, as champions, everyone raises their game against us. That's tough enough in itself and I think we do have a challenging season ahead. But we're very positive and we've prepared well."

View from the opposition

After holding off Doncaster Rovers Belles to secure the FA WSL 2 title last year, Sunderland will look to be positive as they attempt to establish themselves in the top tier, according to defender Hayley Sharp.

And with the Lady Black Cats side boosted by the recent return of star midfielder Rachel Furness from injury, Sharp is looking forward to an early test of her side’s FA WSL 1 credentials.

“We know it’s going to be a good challenge,” she said. “We’re the underdogs but we’re ready for the challenge and it will be a great opportunity to see what we can do.

“We’ve got Suzanne Mulvey and Victoria Williams that have come into the side, while they’ve also made a few changes.

“We know we’ll need to play well against them for the whole game but we’ll see what happens and we are really up for it.

“It’s exciting to play in front of the TV cameras but we’ve got a job to do and need to keep our heads.

“Getting Rachel back is massive as she’s a big player for us and it was great to get her back for the pre-season win against Durham so I’m sure she’ll be raring to go.” - ladies.liverpoolfc.com

Thanks kellan.

Good news - I will neither be there tonight nor following it online. I'll settle for reading your (and Heather's!) excellent comments, tweets and match reports after the event. WelshRed, Jonathan Hall and Lady_brandybuck will now breathe a collective sigh of relief.

WSL - Liverpool 1 - 2 Sunderland

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/Z-1rbs6bU8U&amp;?fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/Z-1rbs6bU8U&amp;?fs=1</a>

Defending Women's Super League champions Liverpool were narrowly defeated 2-1 by Sunderland in the opening game of the season at the Select Security Stadium in Widnes on Wednesday night.

Liverpool debutant Satara Murray got her name on the scoresheet for the hosts but it wasn't enough to overcome the side from the north east.

Newly-promoted Sunderland lost on just one occasion last term, and they gave an excellent account of themselves with a memorable victory in the campaign opener against the Reds.

Liverpool's first effort on goal came after five minutes when Fara Williams fired wide with her left foot from 25 yards.

The Reds began to settle and threatened again, when good work down the right by Ingrid Ryland saw her find Nicole Rolser, who adjusted her body and hit a half-volley on target but it was well handled by Sunderland goalkeeper Rachael Laws.

After nine minutes, Rolser raced away from the visitors' defence and looked to round Laws. However, she couldn't find a yard to pull the trigger and turned back to set up Ryland, who arrowed a shot just past the post.

Sunderland's first sight on goal came after 15 minutes when Sarah McFadden tried her luck from distance, but the tame effort did not threaten as Libby Stout collected.

Moments later Williams burst forward before unleashing a ferocious effort on goal which had Laws scrambling until the left-footed rocket whistled wide of the Sunderland goal.

Midway through the first period, Katie Zelem tested Laws with a half-volley from just inside the area that was comfortably stopped by the Sunderland 'keeper.

The Lady Black Cats took the lead after 26 minutes when a superb cross from the right by Kiera Ramshaw was met by a towering header from No.9 Bethany Mead, who expertly guided the ball home.

The Reds went close to equalising before the break as Martha Harris and Asisat Oshoala arrived late at the back post. It fell to the Nigerian, who snatched at the chance and struck wide of the target.

It was the champions who began the second half the stronger and applied the early pressure, Ryland impressing with some threatening deliveries from the right flank.

Sunderland carved open a chance when midfielder Rachel Furness spread the ball to the right where she found Ramshaw, the No.7 drifted infield and returned the ball to Furness, who hit a wicked strike towards the top corner only to be denied by a fine Stout stop.

Matt Beard's side had a big shout for a penalty waved away before the hour mark when Rolser was clattered into from behind by Stephanie Bannon, only for the referee to wave away the Reds' appeals.

Oshoala almost equalised when she cut in from the left and sent a driven right-footed strike on target, but Laws was once again at hand to prevent the leveller.

After 73 minutes a Williams free-kick from the right caused havoc in the Sunderland area and Natasha Dowie went close with a header from close range which struck the crossbar before the referee awarded a free-kick for a foul during the scramble.

Three minutes later Mead raced away from the Liverpool defence and into the area, where she touched the ball past the recovering Murray. The Sunderland forward was clipped and went to ground, leaving the referee with little option but to point to the spot.

From 12 yards, Sunderland debutant Brooke Chaplen calmly slotted the ball into the top corner to double the advantage for the visitors.

Murray made amends with 10 minutes remaining and reduced the Reds' arrears with a powerfully struck finish. Williams sent in a wonderful corner which was palmed away by Laws and the Liverpool defender reacted quickest and fired home to give the Ladies a glimmer of hope.

The final chance on goal came when Williams tried to level from distance and hit a ferocious right-footed shot marginally over the crossbar.

But it wasn't to be for Beard's side, who will now look to bounce back against Birmingham next Wednesday in Widnes. - ladies.liverpoolfc.com
