Steve Cook, missing in Crete, can you help?

YNWA poster goes missing on holiday in Crete

A regular poster on ynwa.tv – Steve Cook (stevieboy2k) - has been reported missing by friends and family whilst on holiday in Malia, Crete.

He has not been seen or heard of since the first day of his holiday. His group of friends became friendly with another bunch of holidaymakers and it is believe that Steve went off with this new group.

His friends on holiday have kept a vigil at his room in the hope that he will return as it is believed that he has no money and no change of clothes. It is also believed that he does not have his mobile phone with him either.

Posters have been put up around the resort asking for any information and his family have since flown out in the hope of finding him. Tentative sightings and leads have so far been unsuccessful.

So if you know anyone in the resort of Malia or those adjacent could you please ask them to have a look out for Steve. He is 20 years old, has dark hair and is around 5ft 8 in height.

If anyone has any information would you please contact us via enquiries@ynwa.tv and we will inform his family.

Thanks.

How long's he been missing?

Is it just possible he fell in with another group and went on the piss for a while?

He's been missing since the first day of arrival 31st August/1st September.

The point is this is completely out of character for Steve, he's got no change of clothes and no or very little money on him.

His family are so concerned about him they flew out over the weekend to look for him. Hopefully it will be a false alarm and he's happy doing whatever oblivious to the reaction his absense has caused.
Has no opinion as it is normally wrong.

If anyone reads this who is/can speak Greek can they get in touch?  We'd like to have the appeal for information translated into Greek so that we can post it on Greek forums.  I know there were loads of Olympiakos fans who joined up when we played in the group stages so we can try them, I wondered though if we had any Greek members of Rawk?

I've emailed some of the Olympiakos fans who came on the site last year, hopefully they can help spread the word in Crete.

This is what Babelfish comes up with, for the original post:

If you can, please check into ynwa to see the mailshots they are sending out to national media, Sky Sports etc.   Anything that can be done to raise awareness of his disappearance, may just help.  If he does not turn up for his flight tonight / tomorrow morning, the search may well move to the land surrounding the town of Malia.

I have just spoken to Chris:

At the moment there are 100 reps and volunteers searching the local area (grassland and coastline), Chris and Tony have been doing quite a few interviews with the media, he says they are swarming the place. The police and the British consulate are also doing as much as possible.

One lead is that a local woman 35 miles inland reported seeing a man matching Steve's description but he was wearing a denim jacket, but Chris doesn't think he owns a denim jacket, but the police are still following up.

He also said the support and the messages he is getting are really helping him through this and wants me to pass on his thanks to everyone. He said "If it wasn't for you lot the media wouldn't be here and he'd be pissing in the wind otherwise".

Because Steve has missed his flight, the powers that be realise now that this is not just another drunken Brit abroad.

One point to stress, in the course of appealling for the media to carry the case Steve's brother has decided, after some thought,  to speak to the Sun reporter who showed interest in the case.  I'm sure no-one on this site would be so insensitive as to question this decision.  One moments reflection on how you would feel were it your loved one in a similar position should be sufficient.

Please help us concentrate on the matter at hand by refraining from any further comment on this issue.

I have just spoken to Chris again and also his father.

Chris is just about to go out again and there is another search planned of another area tomorrow.

His brother flies back home tomorrow and his brother-in-law flies in. They will hire a car tomorrow and cover some more ground.

He again sends his thanks to everyone and mentions Philly, Kahnee and slapnuts especially.

His father is only getting news from Crete so it was agreed that I told him what we had done here.

His father was surprised and pleased of what everyone had done (emailing media, other websites etc etc) he seemed shocked that complete strangers should be doing this and asked me to thank you all.

He did say that a website will be up and running soon dedicated to Steve and he will phone me when it's ready so we can link it everywhere and anywhere.

Keep up the work emailing and such.

Kev

Mods, would it make sense to unlock Slapnuts's post and have it bumped up by all and sundry, AND more importantly replicated in the LFC forum (which many more transient visitors look at)? I would presume that in this case the more exposure the better, and stickies are for better or worse, often ignored. Considering the premier status of RAWK amongst unofficial LFC forums, I would think it would be worth a try?

Hope Steve turns up safe and well.  :-\

Must be a truely horrible time for his family and close friends.

I just pray to God that there can be some explainable circumstances for his disappearance and that he will return home soon.

There has been a tentative sighting of a lad matching Steve's description (not clothes though) wandering in the hills by Malia. The police are currently following this up as this person has been reported by two seperate villagers.
The area is rich with fruit and apparently the locals are so friendly they 'adopt' strangers as it is so remote.

Fingers crossed.

Steve's two brothers have been staying out in Crete looking for Steve and costs are mounting.  If you can spare some cash please consider donating.  The link to the paypal account is here:

ynwa@bromage-smith.com

Please leave your details when you donate, in the event that Steve is found before the money is used I think donations can go either to the HJC or the Michael Shields campaign so please indicate your preference.

Latest update:

The police are doing a bang-up job, following up every lead and every reported "unidentified" lad who gets taken to hospital.
They've had 8 cars out touring the area where the young lad was seen, and the areas the cars couldn't reach they got a landie in.
Tomorrow a press conference is scheduled where a shirt like the one Ste was wearing when he went missing will be displayed, and the head consulate will be flying in from Athens to see what else needs doing.
All in all, he is feeling pretty positive at the moment.

Chris has also done an interview with the largest tv company in Crete and it will go out tonight.

Steve Cook, missing in Crete, can you help?
« Reply #36 on: September 9, 2005, 01:38:27 pm »
Many of you will already have heard of the plight of Liverpool supporter Steven Cook who went missing on the 1st September.   Anyone who reads ynwa.tv knows what bright, cheerful and witty characters Steve and his brother are.   What you may not know is that Steven was a member of Rawk forums as well as YNWA.TV.  We'd like to do everything we can to try and get Steven back home to his family so please take a minute and read about his case.

The disappearance

It's now nine days since Steven was last seen following a night out in the resort town of Malia in Crete.  He flew out from Manchester on the 30th August and went out with his friends.  We know that Steven was in 'Mikes Bar' at the top end of Beach Street in Malia.  Steven was staying at the Frixos Hotel Malia.  His passport, return ticket and money were left in his room.  At the time he went missing Steven was wearing a pink t shirt and black combat trousers.  It should be stressed that this disappearance is completely out of character, Steven is not the kind of lad to leave his friends and family worrying about his whereabouts.

The Search

Steven's brothers Chris (Spike Starski/Fabgear) and Tony flew out to Crete, they've been helping to coordinate a series of search parties with the help of the local police force, as well as the ex-pat community on Crete and reps and holidaymakers in the resort.

Two days ago Steven was due to fly back from Crete but failed to turn up at the airport. Hospitals on the island have been contacted following reports of patients that matched Steven's description but unfortunately all the leads that have so far been followed up have come to nought.

Chris is in constant touch with friends and family back home and in one of his last communications said, “The police here are doing an excellent job, they are following every lead and every reported ‘unidentified’ lad who gets taken to hospital. They’ve had eight cars out searching and got a Land Rover out when the cars could not go any further”. He went onto praise the locals in Malia who have been supporting Chris in every way possible, “They have been brilliant, offering food and drink during the long day searching and have even joined in those searches”. Chris says he cannot thank them enough for what they are doing.

How can people help?

Take part in a search
As the searches still go on, the internet has become a great help in assisting his family over in Crete. Graham Mattingley – owner of the website www.malia.co.uk - reacted to an appeal put on the site’s forums by Chris by organising seats on a flight to Malia by contacting First Choice who kindly donated those seats to friends of Steve and people who wish to help in the search for him.  The flight is scheduled to leave Manchester Airport around midnight on Friday, although it had been postponed it appears it's now back on and should you be able to help please get in touch by emailing: kahnjohnson@hotmail.com

Donate to the support fund
Obviously conducting a search like this takes both time and money.  To try and help Steve's family and friends conduct the search there's been an appeal fund set up.  You can donate to the fund here:

ynwa@bromage-smith.com

All monies raised will be held or sent onto Steve’s family in Crete.  Many of this sites members have already proved extraordinairily generous in their support of another red in trouble, we wouldn't post another appeal so soon if the need wasn't urgent in the extreme.

Steve’s family back home are overwhelmed by the response and the appeal for help and his father Norman wants to pass on their sincere thanks to everyone. A website has been set-up by his family www.findstevencook.co.uk for people to leave any information they feel that can help in finding their son.  Please only use the address if you have information which could help in the search, we will of course pass on any messages of support you wish to leave on this thread to the family.

If you, or someone you know is about to head out to Crete on holiday please consider taking along some posters and flyers and leaving them in any bars / hotels you visit.  Posters and Flyers can be downloaded here:

If you know anyone who is resident on Crete, please pass this information on to them, the more eyes and ears that are looking for Steven the better the chance of someone being able to help.

If you have recently returned from Crete and have any information, no matter how trivial it may seen to you, or recognise Steve from his photograph, please contact his family via www.findstevencook.co.uk or by phoning Cheshire CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.

As the words of the song go Steven's family are walking through the storm at the moment.  Thanks again for any help and support you can provide for them.

(This is a copy of a message which has gone on the Opinion board.  I'll merge the threads later today once it's had a bit of exposure on the LFC forum).
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs

People were due to fly over there tonight, however Steve's family has requested that this be 'postponed' for the time being.

That doesn't sound very positive. Any more details on this?
