Europa League 14/15
« on: December 10, 2014, 08:31:08 am »
Right then...who can we play?

Need a decent away trip to soften the blow from last night.

I assume we get seeded to play the group runners up? Therefore away leg first also?

EDIT: Just checked 09/10 - we played Unirea at home in the first leg...

Info from the Europa League (Draws) section of the UEFA website:

Draw procedure
There will be two pots for the round of 32 draw: the 12 group winners and the four best third-ranked teams in the UEFA Champions League group stage are seeded. They will be drawn against the 12 group runners-up and the remaining third-placed UEFA Champions League sides. No team can play a club from their group or a side from the same association. Games will be played on 19 and 26 February.

Yeah it's Monday 3pm, think we could actually end up with a tough draw when you compare them sides to Basel and ludogorets .. Some are even better. The way the season is developing Rodgers could well identify this as the route back to the CL as on current form we will struggle to finish in the top 4.

Round of 32

The 24 clubs qualified from the group stage will be joined by the 8 clubs that finish the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in third position. The round of 32 pairings are determined by means of a draw. This round is played under the knockout system, on a home and away basis (two legs). The UEFA administration ensures that the following principles are respected.

a) Clubs from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.
b) The 12 UEFA Europa League group-winners and the 4 best third-ranked teams in the UEFA Champions League group stage are drawn against the 12 UEFA Europa League group runners-up and the remaining third-ranked teams in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
c) The winners and runners-up of the same group cannot be drawn against each other.
d) The UEFA Europa League group-winners and the four best third-ranked in the UEFA Champions League group stage play the return leg at home.

The team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the round of 16.

We are unseeded so will be in the 2nd pot and at home first game.

Surely that can't be known until tonight, or is there no possible permutation that sees us as one of the top four seeds?

This is a depressing thread, especially if the post above is correct. I know we've not done well in Europe recently but getting knocked out of the European Cup at the first stage and then not even being seeded in this is shite.

Edit: Yeah you're right, I didn't realise it was done on performance in the groups, thought it was on coefficient. We're definitely unseeded, as the 3rd placed teams in Groups A, B and C have more points than us, and whoever finishes 3rd in G will have more after tonight.

Yeah i had a look last night, thinking we'd be seeded and there are some rotten teams that we could up getting.

But the teams that are top of their group at the moment aren't too bad...

No matter what happens tonight we're unseeded.

The 12 group winners are seeded and the 4 champions Lge drop outs with the highest points get seeded.

The 12 group runners up are unseeded and  the 4 champions Lge 3rd placed teams with the lowest points totals don't get seeded.

No matter what happens tonight there are already going to be 4 champions Lge 3rd placed teams with more than our 5 points.

At those odds if you stuck £100 quid on it you'd win nothing.

Aha, so Southampton away (currently 21 Feb) should move to the Sunday, which would be perfect for me as unlikely to make Saturday.
And if Liverpool do get through, fingers crossed for the same for Man United at home (currently 21 Mar).

So who could they face?

The following teams have already won their groups and will therefore be seeded:

Red Bull Salzburg, Dynamo Moscow, Inter Milan, Fiorentina.

Other teams who they could face include, depending on Thursday's results, are:

Borussia Moenchengladbach, Villarreal, Club Brugge, Torino, Feyenoord, Sevilla, Napoli, Sparta Prague, Dynamo Kiev, AaB, Legia Warsaw, Trabzonspor.

When is the draw?

The draw will be held on December 15.

When will the games be played?

The first legs will be played on February 19 2015, and the second legs will be played a week later on February 26 2015. The unseeded teams would be at home first.

Best case scenario?

The winner of Group L - Legia Warsaw or Trabzonspor.

Worst case scenario?

Take your pick. Rafael Benitez's Napoli stick out, but Sevilla, Villarreal, Moenchengladbach, Inter and Fiorentina are all still a possibility at time of writing.

Can we draw another Champions League team in the draw?

If so the seeded champions league teams will be Bilbao, Olympiakos, Sporting and Zenit won't they?
