The Knick
« on: October 17, 2014, 11:28:25 am »
Anyone watching this?

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen, the show takes place in 1900 New York in The Knickerbocker Hospital (hence the title).

I'm three episodes in and really enjoying it. It's a bit dark and gruesome at times. With it being pre-antibiotics, there are lots of scenes of invasive surgery with numerous deaths on the operating table. It  makes you appreciate how far medicine has come!

Owen plays a good role even though his accent is a bit all over the place. Will be interesting to see how the show develops.

I like it. I'm upto episode 9, with episode 10 on tonight. There are some really disturbing parts, but it's pretty fascinating.

I've really enjoyed it so far. Algie is boss and so is the soundtrack.

New York looks grim back in those days. Don't fancy that for a delorean day out.

Nice ending to the season.

Spoiler
Loved how things escalated towards the end and how the outcome of some characters was presented.
The end I'm sorry but I laughed. Treating cocaine addiction with heroine. It's from Ze Bayer though... I know what the year is but still...

Oh and fuck off with the skull scene at the start of the episode. Just fuck off.

Loving this.

Clive Owen is very watchable in anything, but put him as a surgeon in NY in the 1900's. I'm in.

Just binged the first season. Loved it. Undoubtedly has the Soderbergh-touch visually, and Clive Owen's masterful in it. S2 can't come soon enough!

To all the disillusioned viewers of contemporary HBO-drama (True Detective S2 ;D, the ending to Boardwalk Empire, a shitty last season of GoT): this show's the remedy to your disillusionment.

Stuck for something to watch last night so gave the pilot of 'The Knick' a whirl.

Loved it!!  Not usually over keen on medical dramas or Clive Owen to be honest but I instantly loved the feel of this show and you can tell straight away its a classy affair directed by someone who really knows what they are doing.  Hell, i even like Clive Owen's character in this.  Thackery is boss :)

Going to keep going with this one for sure.

It appears I've got 2 weeks to watch Season 1 as the second season premiers on October 16th :)

I'll keep bumping this thread until at least one of you fuckers talks to me about The Knick. :)

I'm closing in on the end of season 1 (I've got 3 eps left to watch) just in time for season 2 which starts on Friday.  Incidentally, how long after its aired in the US will us Limeys get it?

Some superb moments already in season 1. Some that make you avert your eyes from the screen and also some very heartwarming scenes beautifully shot and acted.  The scene where Dr Thackery rides a bicycle for the first time was so touching  :)

Other great moments so far

Spoiler

Thack and Bertie researching procedures (full of cocaine and on willing Asian Prostitutes!!) and then performing a successful placenta praevia for the first time was fucking amazing.

Thackery discovering Algenon's undercover negro clinic and watching his annoyance turn to amazement as he sees some of Edwards medical advancements.  Thackery finally casts aside his racial prejudice and accepts Edwards for what he is. "Welcome to The Knick Mr Edwards" :)

Also, loving the developing relationship between the big Irish nutter that is Tom Cleary and Sister Harriet.

Steven Soderbergh has this show well and truly nailed and the soundtrack is immense too.

I'm a big fan mate, the first series was excellent and looking forward to the second.

Love all the characters, apart from the divvy doctor whose wife goes all screwy. I read 16th October on Sky for season 2 I think. That lines up with the US I believe.

The soundtrack, as you say, is immense. At first I thought the electronic elements might jar a bit but it totally doesn't.

Oh man how dark was that?

Spoiler
I think it felt like and was a series finale. I have read about Cinemax ordering a single script by the creators to get a feeling how a possible season 3 would go but where do you go without Thack?

Was a dark and magnificent finale with some really painful viewing that peaked at the end with Thack's doing surgery on himself. Killing himself. Yet for all that stuff I saw at the end with the aforementioned, Cleary's "confession" was for me the most shocking thing. Wow. Didn't see that coming. Even then it's not exactly confession but more like "come on father, give me your blessing here and be done with it" or something! Haha.

It was between Barrow and Henry but the latter seemed more probable to me. Scum of the highest order and poor Cornelia had another painful experience there.

PS: I fucking hate how much of a c*nt Lucy turned out to be.
